All males exhibit glittering green, blue or<br />
violet upper plumage while the breast is a<br />
contrasting red, yellow or orange. Females<br />
have a more muted coloration dominated by<br />
tones of brown, gray or slate.<br />
Since first being described in literature in 1830,<br />
the quetzal has been assigned at least 10 different<br />
names including: Trogon pavoninus, Trogon<br />
resplendens, Calurus resplendens, Caluras<br />
paradiseus and Pharomacrus paradiseus.<br />
Today scientists identify the quetzal<br />
with the name Pharomacrus Mocinno. In<br />
Latin, Pharo means “light” and Macrus<br />
means “big:” bird of big light. Mocinno is<br />
the family name of the European naturalist<br />
who first obtained study skins of the quetzal.<br />
Mocinno was successful in shooting<br />
numerous examples and sending them back<br />
to Old World academies, which in turn<br />
honored him by immortalizing his name.<br />
