What’s the difference between sight and vision? In the
case of Justo Gallego, it’s single-minded dedication.
When he was 27 he entered the monastery of Santa
María de la Huerta with the intention of dedicating
his life to the church. After eight years he fell ill with
tuberculosis and was forced to leave for the safety of
the others. Devastated, he returned to his family home
but rather than feeling defeated or try and join another
monastery he set about building his own cathedral!
That’s what he set out to do more than a half a century
ago, and hasn’t stopped since.
With no formal training in construction, he steadfastly
gets up at 3:30 every morning; at 4 a.m. he collects
reject bricks and broken tiles from nearby factories and
scrap yards and then confronts the extreme heat and
bitter cold day in and day out to single-handedly tackle
this monstrous task. It matters little to him how long it
will take or if he’ll ever complete it. This is his dream
and his illusion. For him that’s good enough.
