According to 1985-86, Ministry of Agriculture report, India produces 38.2 million kg wool, which is 8.3 percent of the total wool produced in Asia (Chaudhry, 1988). <strong>Sheep</strong> population in Indian is given in Table 3.4. The population of sheep in 1977 over 1966 had shown a decline of 2.6 per cent whereas there has been 18 per cent increase in 1977-82. In 1987, it recorded a decrease of 6.3% as compared to 1982. The overall rate of growth of sheep population from 1972 to 1987 has been 14.9 per cent. This has 345
een possible because of its substantial increase in the states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Punjab. The increase of population in 1992 over 1987 is also substantial i.e. 49.2 million as against 45.7 million in 1987 (7.6%) due to increase in population in the states of Gujrat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharastra and Rajasthan. The productivity of Indian sheep is lower than of those in agriculturally more advanced countries. Yet considering their nutritional and physical environment their productivity cannot be considered as inefficient. The major reasons for low productivity are inadequate grazing resources, diseases, causing high mortality, morbidity and consequent reduced production and serious lack of organized effort for bringing genetic improvement. 346
