Common Name : <strong>Andaman</strong> Cobra<br />

Habitat : Tropical rain forest.<br />

Distribution : India : <strong>Andaman</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Status : Information deficient.<br />

Amphibians<br />

Studies on the amphibian fauna <strong>of</strong> <strong>Andaman</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Nicobar</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong>s are scanty <strong>and</strong><br />

scattered. The pioneer studies made on amphibian fauna <strong>of</strong> the isl<strong>and</strong>s was by Smith (1941).<br />

Subsequently several workers, Cherchi (1954), Sekar (1984), Crombie (1986), Sarkar (1990),<br />

Pillai (1991), Das (1994, 1995 <strong>and</strong> 1996), Tikader <strong>and</strong> Das (1995) <strong>and</strong> Daniels <strong>and</strong> David<br />

(1996), studied on the amphibian diversity <strong>and</strong> reproted several new records <strong>and</strong> new<br />

species for the Isl<strong>and</strong>s. But the revisionary work on amphibian fauna <strong>of</strong> India made by<br />

Ch<strong>and</strong>a (2002) revealed the occurrence <strong>of</strong> 17 species <strong>of</strong> amphibians from <strong>Andaman</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Nicobar</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong>s. Of which, 6 species (35%) are endemic.<br />

Common Name : Charles Darwin's Eastern Frog.<br />

Habitat : Tropical evergreen <strong>and</strong> moist deciduous forests.<br />

Distribution : India : South <strong>and</strong> North <strong>Andaman</strong>s.<br />

Status : IUCN : Critically endangered.<br />

Family : RANIDAE<br />
