Three subspecies are recognised by some authors : M. r. rufipennis, M. r. andamanica and M. r. tiwarii, but all the three subspecies are now considered to be the same. Sankaran (1995) mentioned that the M. rufipennis is full species endemic to A and N Islands while the subspecies M. r. tiwarii is considered to be endemic to Great Nicobar Islands. 21.
