Birds
The Islands are comparatively rich in avifauna. According to Abdulali (1964),
avifauna affinities of the islands appear to be similar to India than to Burma or Malay, except
for Nicobar Pigeon and Megapode which are having Australian affinities. Some species of
resident birds of the islands display distinct morphological differences from island to island
in size, colour and pattern forming different subspecies during course of time due to
isolation. About 242 species and subspecies including 95 endemic birds have been reported
by Tikader and Das (1985). Sankaran and Vijayan (1993) recorded 270 birds of which 105
species and subspecies are endemic, many of them are highly restricted in range. The high
proportion of endemics, however, is due to presence of large number of endemic
subspecies. Of the 105 endemic species and subspecies, only 14 full species and the rest of
the 82 birds are (Sankaran, 1995) subspecies of species found on neighboring mainlands.
The figures of species, subspecies and endemics to the islands are varying due to taxonomic
uncertainty of some species and subspecies. The Dept. of Environment and Forests, A and N
Administration listed a total 268 species and subspecies of birds from A and N Islands of
which 98 species and subspecies are endemics. Dasgupta et al. (2002) listed about 50 full
endemic species from India, of which 15 are from A and N Islands (7 sp. Andaman Group, 5
species Nicobar Group and 3 species common in both A and N Id.) but no mention about the
