DISCUSSION About 8386 species of animals both terrestrial and marine together have been so far recorded from the islands. Of the total fauna of islands, the marine habitats represent 61.70% of species while the terrestrial habitats 38.30% with an endemisim of 4.73% and 27.12% respectively. It is attributed that the high percentage of endemisim in terrestrial fauna is due to the isolation of land masses and their faunal elements from each other. The reason for low endemicity in the marine faunal elements is due to continuity of the water medium. Of the total fauna about 1117 species (13.31%) are endemic to the islands (Table.1), while the reminder represents a fascinating mixture of taxa from Indo-China, Indo- Malaya and even sub-continental India. Of the total fauna, 3212 species are terrestrial with 281
