DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARD
The following members of the Faculty of Humanities have been chosen for this award in 2012:
John Anthony Higgins
Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature
A statement in John Higgins’s teaching philosophy aptly describes the teaching philosophy of this Distinguished
Teacher: “Learning is a directed activity (the teacher is a kind of coach); but still an activity of the learner
(who is an intellectual athlete in the making)”. It becomes easy to understand why his teaching elicits responses
from students such as ‘excellent’, ‘brilliant, ‘systematic’,‘humorous’ and ‘patient’!
The Department of English Language and Literature has had the good fortune of having a teacher of the calibre
of John Higgins for approximately 3 decades. He has made significant contributions to teaching and curriculum
design in both under- and postgraduate spheres, with a particular strength in post-graduate teaching.
Honours students relate how his course had opened new intellectual vistas for them, allowing them to engage
meaningfully with other aspects of the programme and providing the conceptual springboard for interesting
new research projects. His innovativeness has led, over time, to the creation of new courses in linguistics,
theory and literary analysis in the department and a whole undergraduate programme - Theory of Literature -
in the Faculty. A new MA in Literary Studies created alongside J. M. Coetzee was another of John Higgins’s
contributions.
His brilliant seminars, as well as teaching academic content, are used as a tool used to increase selfconfidence,
knowledge and understanding amongst learners, and to contribute to their successful graduateness.
By embodying the links between research and teaching, John Higgins is helping to create a world-class graduate
culture in his department.
He has shared both his teaching, knowledge of curricula and staff development with the Universities of
Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand locally, and with overseas institutions in Germany and the United States,
and notably at Columbia University.
At the core of his teaching lies the commitment to ‘deep reading”: the combination of close textual analysis
with theoretical questioning and historical localisation. Combined these three lead – according to our
metaphorical ‘tennis coach’ - to ‘a certain practice of writing and argument’ that extends students’ academic
skills and prepares them both for further scholarship and many kinds of work in the ‘information economy’.
It’s hard work mastering that killer serve, but with good coaching, all students have a chance to realize their full
potential! John Higgins’s teaching is regarded by many a colleague and student alike as opening up for them
new ways of thinking and analysis.
DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARD
Jeremy Robert Wanderer
Senior Lecturer in Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy has had the privilege of having on its staff a teacher of outstanding quality,
Dr Jeremy Wanderer. During his decade at UCT he has made a definitive pedagogical contribution to teaching
and learning at the undergraduate and post graduate levels. He inspires students to ‘think outside the box,’ and
as one student said, “Dr Wanderer taught me how to think.’
His areas of specialization include epistemology, moral psychology, and the philosophy of language.
One student noted that Dr Wanderer spent an entire lecture on the word, ‘ought.’ The ability to make magical the
process of discovery, the uncanny charisma to open up worlds, is the hallmark of excellent teaching. Professor
David Benatar, the head of the Philosophy Department writes, “I am able to distinguish between a very good
teacher and an excellent one. Dr Wanderer clearly falls into the latter category.”
He received his PhD in Philosophy at the London School of Economics in 2002 after having received a
Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Greenwich in 1996. In 2010 and 2011 he drew on
his expertise in education and taught undergraduate PGCE students a course titled ‘Philosophy of Education.’
For Dr Wanderer, ‘teaching will always be a form of work-in-progress’, something that he ‘wrestles with’.
In his own words; ‘My role as lecturer is not to act as a guide to the conversation of others but to teach-byexample,
in the sense that the lectures involve presentations of my own continued grappling with these issues.”
For stronger students who want to explore ideas in philosophy in more depth, Dr. Wander invented the concept
of an ‘Ideas Clinic.’
In all his undergraduate and post graduate courses Dr Wanderer opted to teach smaller amounts of philosophical
material rather than survey courses. He has the ability to help students grapple with the relationship between
reason and belief, between freedom and responsibility. And the nature and value of philosophy itself.
10
SOCIAL RESPONSIVENESS AWARD
The Social Responsiveness Award provides an institutional signal to members of the University that social
responsiveness is an important institutional priority.
Mohamed Adhikari
Associate Professor in Historical Studies
Against the Current: A Biography of Harold Cressy, 1889-1916
The most striking feature of this social responsiveness initiative is the commitment of this academic to using his
scholarship to sustain a grassroots project that benefited a school community in a wide variety of ways. For a
period of over two decades Mohamed Adhikari, an alumnus of Harold Cressy High School, put his considerable
talents as an historian at the service of his alma mater in the execution of heritage projects relating to that
institution. Most recently, drawing on decades of research, he produced an edifying and attractively illustrated
popular biography of Harold Cressy, the inspirational early twentieth century educationist after whom the
school is named.
Mohamed Adhikari has published extensively on coloured identity, including a book on the Teachers’ League
of South Africa, of which Harold Cressy was the principal founder. Because Cressy is central to these scholarly
concerns, he features prominently in Adhikari’s academic writing. Adhikari has also for many years taught on
the subject of coloured identity and politics.
Members of the Harold Cressy school fraternity were involved in the design and writing processes of the
biography from the beginning, and several provided source material for the book. This example of shared
planning and inclusive decision making resulted in a product owned by the school community rather than by the
author. An indication of this is that the biography is being integrated into the school’s curriculum, and Adhikari
has offered to conduct workshops on the subject with both teachers and pupils.
Adhikari has shown considerable imagination and initiative in carrying his scholarship beyond academia to serve
a broader social purpose. This biography not only explains, commemorates and celebrates the contribution of
a progressive Cape educator, but has become a vehicle for achieving wider communal goals. More practically,
it has served as an instrument for raising bursary funds for indigent but deserving Harold Cressy students.
Adhikari persuaded Juta and Company to finance the publication of 1,000 copies of the volume as part of its
corporate social responsibility programme. The immediate impact of this initiative is that the Harold Cressy
Bursary Fund will earn close onto R100, 000 from the sale of these books.
Although Cressy’s lifestory is meticulously researched, and the study meets the highest academic standards, it
is written in a lucid, accessible style that will appeal to lay readers and make sense to high school students. This
book not only provides an opportunity for learners to reflect on their own history but is also an eloquent reminder
to the Harold Cressy teachers, pupils, parents, and alumni of the school’s rich historical legacy. Importantly,
this innovative project has relevance beyond this constituency by serving as a model for ways in which other
schools too can celebrate their past, find inspiration in the present, and raise funding for future ventures.
Adhikari’s work represents an exemplary case of social responsiveness in that it is of mutual benefit to the
academic enterprise as well as an external community, is a product of shared planning and decision-making,
demonstrates excellence in knowledge production and dissemination, and harnesses professional practice in a
way that helps meet the needs of our society.

DEGREE OF DOCTOR
OF PHILOSOPHY
In Afrikaans:
William Frank Thomas Minnaar
Thesis Title: ‘n Herwaardering van Olga
Kirsch se oeuvre: identiteit, moederskap
en ballingskap aan die hand van die
psigoanalitiese teorieë van onder andere
Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan en Julia
Kristeva
William Minnaar has a BA
(Communication), a BA (Languages),
BA(Hons) in Afrikaans and an MA
(Afrikaans) from the University of
Johannesburg. He has been studying at
UCT in the School of Languages and
Literatures since 2009. During this time he
has been working full-time whilst writing
his thesis.
William Minnaar’s PhD thesis
investigates the works of Jewish Afrikaans
poet, Olga Kirsch, who is celebrated as
among the first Afrikaans poets to defy
the National Party’s racist policies. Using
psychoanalytical theories, he gleans
insights from her poetry written in the
1940s as well as from her second creative
period in the 1970s and 1980s, especially
regarding her identity as a subject between
cultures. He reveals her problematic
relationships with her mother and
daughters and explores the drives behind
her writings: her flight from the phallic
mother, her loss of the paternal love object,
her longing for wholeness, and her selfactualisation
through the creative process.
Whereas Sigmund Freud’s basic tenets and
their further development by Jacques Lacan
provide the underlying structure of his
thesis, William Minnaar employs extensive
insights from the theoretician Julia Kristeva
to counterpoint the masculine views of
the former two psychoanalysts. His thesis
includes some of Kirsch’s rediscovered
poems and comments by her family
members thus adding to our understanding
of the poet and her work. The thesis also
considers how a canonisation process has
established Kirsch’s value and durability as
an Afrikaans poet, thus permitting William
Minnaar to conclude that Kirsch is an
indispensable part of the Afrikaans literary
canon.
Thesis Title: Reading restitution in District
Six: law, discourse and ‘governmentality’
Robert Macdonald has a BA from the
University of South Africa and a MA from
UCT where he has been studying, in the
Department of English, since 2008. During
this time he has worked as the Head of the
Ministry for Social Development in the
Western Cape while also writing his PhD
thesis.
Robert Macdonald’s PhD thesis
offers an interdisciplinary textual analysis
of the legal documents (primarily contracts
and court documents) used to negotiate and
fix the terms of the statutory land restitution
process in District Six, Cape Town, from
1996 to 2012. It traces the interweaving
of restitution’s legislative concepts with
heterogeneous political and cultural
discourses emanating from District Six’s
unique history. It argues that the hybridised
configurations of discourse generated by
this encounter serve as new instruments
of power in the space of the restitution
project, generating certain unintended and
sometimes paradoxical material outcomes.
Situating his analysis within the broader
context of South African land restitution,
Robert Macdonald argues that the District
Six case illustrates the vulnerability of the
post-apartheid legal and administration
regime to micro-political appropriation, in
spite of the highly prescriptive nature of
the legislation involved. He argues further
for the importance of close textual analysis
of existing restitution cases as a means to
inform future policy debate and formulation
around restitution and the ‘land question’ in
post-apartheid South Africa.
Kirsten Lee Morreira
Thesis Title: Social change, class
formation and English: a study of young
black South Africans with “Model C”
school backgrounds
Kirsten Morreira has been studying
Linguistics at UCT since 2000, completing
a BA, BA(Hons) and MA. She has tutored
in Linguistics since 2002 and lectured there
since 2006. The work which comprises
her thesis contributes to and is part of a
larger research project being undertaken by
members of the Linguistics Section.
Kirsten Morreira’s PhD thesis
examines accents in English, and attitudes
towards use of English versus their home
language, among young black South
Africans educated within the former white
(ex ‘Model C’) school system. Using
qualitative analysis of recorded interviews,
she argues that, although there is variation
in the attitudes of the speakers, there are
also many commonalities, e.g. commitment
to South Africa; intentions, where possible,
to bring up any future children as bilingual;
code-switching, particularly with peers;
and a sense of identification with an
‘ethnic’ identity based on the young
people’s own home language, even where
their proficiency in that language is not
high. Kirsten Morreira provides acoustic
analysis of speakers’ vowel systems
in English. Her comparison of these
findings with those emanating from her
interview data shows that there are some
correspondences between the attitudes,
upbringing and education of speakers
with particular vowel variants. Yet, she
concludes, there is no readily discernible
means to predict correspondence between
speakers’ accents and their attitudinal and
biographical characteristics; nor is there
a unified ‘Model C’ accent amongst these
young people.
UCT VALUES
UCT Values
The University is a community of scholars, students and staff. A community implies the
shared acceptance by its members of common values. The concept of values implies not only
rights but also obligations, for the community itself and for its individual members.
This Statement of Values provides a framework that informs and governs what is considered
by the University community to be appropriate and acceptable behaviour. The Statement also
serves as the foundation for a range of University policies and guides the management of
particular aspects of University life.
As a value-based community, we aspire to an encompassing ethos which:
• Promotes academic excellence and the attainment of the institutional goal of becoming a
world-class African University.
• Preserves what is valuable in the history of the institution and of this country, and responds
to the challenges posed by past injustices and unfair discrimination.
• Achieves social transformation, empowerment and participative governance.
• Affirms and protects the fundamental human rights enshrined in the Constitution.
• Encourages the institution and all its members to accept responsibility for the welfare of the
community and for behaving in accordance with these community values.
Values:
We commit ourselves to:
• Truth, fairness, consistency and integrity in both academic and other work, and in all
personal and institutional relationships.
• Compassion, generosity and concern for the needs and aspirations of others, and in
particular for the challenges faced by the less privileged in our society.
• Respect and tolerance for cultural, religious, political, and other differences and
acknowledge of the value of diversity in society.
• Respect for the individual privacy, dignity and the right to personal choice.
• Intellectual honesty, vigour in debate, openness to alternative ideas and respect for other
views, beliefs and opinions.
• Commitment to high standards, personal fulfilment and the pursuit of excellence.
• The protection and responsible use of the University’s assets and resources.
Actions:
In the context of our recent history, we recognize the importance of affirming this ethos and
promoting these shared values. Accordingly, we undertake collectively and individually:
• To promote and protect academic freedom.
• To oppose and take steps to prevent racial, gender or other forms of unfair discrimination,
harassment, violence or abuse.
• To actively promote social justice and equity.
• To nurture a culture of learning which are supportive of students, scholars and teachers.
• To refrain from speech or conduct that demeans or humiliates others.
• To encourage our members to enjoy life, to laugh, to love, to appreciate and take full
advantage of the wealth of opportunities available to use in academic endeavour, in making
friends, and in social, cultural and sporting activity.
• To advance the principle of open governance and to be fully accountable for our actions,
decisions, and the stewardship of the University’s resources and mission.
• To nurture and empower our members.
