The <strong>Hebrew</strong>s raised sheep for wool, food, leather <strong>and</strong><br />

milk. The <strong>Hebrew</strong> shepherd always carried a staff that<br />

could be used as a weapon to protect the flock from<br />

predators as well as to discipline the sheep.<br />

English Name: Lamb<br />

The staff also had a curved end that could be used to pull<br />

a "lamb".<br />

<strong>Hebrew</strong> name: lam<br />

The <strong>Hebrew</strong> word for the shepherd staff is "lam".<br />

Meaning: Authority<br />

The staff is seen as the authority <strong>and</strong> protection of the<br />

shepherd over his flock. The kings' scepter comes from<br />

this imagery. This letter can also mean to or toward as the<br />

staff s used to guide the flock to a particular direction. It<br />

can also mean a yoke, which was a staff on the shoulders<br />

<strong>and</strong> also used to guide the ox in a particular direction.<br />
