Appendix B – Learn <strong>Ancient</strong> <strong>Hebrew</strong><br />

Picture: Tent<br />

The <strong>Hebrew</strong>s lived in goat hair tents that were divided<br />

into two halves, male <strong>and</strong> female sections, <strong>and</strong> divided by<br />

a wall. The above picture is a representation of the floor<br />

plan to the tent. The entrance is seen at the top left.<br />

English Letter: (B)<br />

English Name: Bed<br />

The tent was the place where the family laid their "bed".<br />

<strong>Hebrew</strong> name: Bet<br />

The original name for this letter is bet meaning, tent or<br />

family in <strong>Hebrew</strong>. A common sound shift over time is a<br />

"t" sound to a "d" as they are both similar in sound <strong>and</strong><br />

are formed by the tongue <strong>and</strong> teeth.<br />

<strong>Hebrew</strong> sound: b, bh (v)<br />

The "b" sound is a stop meaning; the sound is made <strong>and</strong><br />

abruptly stops <strong>and</strong> is used at the beginning of a word. The<br />

"bh" is a spirant meaning; the sound can continue <strong>and</strong> is<br />

used when the letter is not at the beginning of the word.<br />

Meaning: Family<br />

The function of the tent is to provide a covering for the<br />

family. This letter can also mean "in" or "inside" as the<br />

family resides "in" the tent.<br />
