Pictographic (form): The most <strong>Ancient</strong> picture for this is<br />
, a picture of an unknown agricultural tool, probably a<br />
type of plow, hoe or sickle. The Egyptian hieroglyph<br />
is very similar <strong>and</strong> is a hoe <strong>and</strong> may be the original form<br />
for this letter.<br />
Mnemonic (meaning): Harvest, food -- from the cutting<br />
of the crops with the tool; Fed, Fattened -- from eating<br />
the crops; Jar -- for storing the harvested foods; Broad --<br />
from the broad blade of the tool; Paddle, Ear, Spade --<br />
from their broadness.<br />
Syllabic (name): The Modern <strong>Hebrew</strong> name is !yz / zayin,<br />
a derivative of the two letter word !z / zan, meaning crops,<br />
which is the original Greek name for this letter.<br />
Phonetic (sound): <strong>Hebrew</strong>, Greek <strong>and</strong> Arabic agree that<br />
the sound for this letter is "z".<br />

Pictographic (form): There are three possible <strong>Ancient</strong><br />
pictographs for this letter, , <strong>and</strong> . The first is<br />
apparently a string or cord. The second is a man with his<br />
arms extended <strong>and</strong> belongs to the fifth letter hey. The<br />
third is a nomadic tent wall, which is "hhets" in <strong>Hebrew</strong>.<br />
