Dear Friends,
The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy had a banner year in 2011!
With twenty years now under our belts, we have established an enviable track
record of success, thanks to the generous support of people like you and
our many partners. We also have much to look forward to as we continue
the strategic direction of our conservation efforts, showcased in the pages
of this annual report edition of Landscript. I can speak for all the staff at
GTRLC when I say that we are more excited about the work our organization
is doing today than ever before. In part, this is because of a growing level of
community engagement in accomplishing work that is critical to achieving a
lasting prosperity for both our region and the great state of Michigan.
Some highlights from 2011 include:
• Eight properties totaling 1,362 acres and over six miles of shoreline
were permanently protected, including the former Mountain Jack’s
property that includes 515 feet of East Bay frontage and is part of the
ongoing Acme Shoreline Park initiative.
• GTRLC received our largest-ever land donation in 2011 with a bequest of
the Misty Acres Farm from Naomi Borwell, a loyal, loving, and generous
supporter. This new 620-acre nature preserve straddles the Benzie
and Manistee County line and will provide access to thousands of feet of
the Betsie River.
• Four additional privately owned properties protected with conservation
easements feature miles of shoreline on the Lower Manistee River, Lake
Michigan, and along Bennett Creek, an important tributary of the Jordan
River, that will protect water quality in our region.
• The Conservancy also completed the protection of two more local farms,
adding to the steadily growing number of active farmland acres protected.
• Also notable were the 110 guided hikes, educational events, and
celebrations the Conservancy hosted, which would not have been possible
without the support of volunteers who generously contributed over 3,600
hours of their time.
We’ve been busy with stewardship activities, including treating invasive
species like phragmites along our shorelines and building and maintaining
trails on our nature preserves and in public parks and natural areas like the
Glacial Hills Pathway near Bellaire. We now have 208 conservation easements
to monitor annually in partnership with private landowners, nearly half our
total protected acreage, which today totals more than 35,500 permanently
preserved acres of land and 113 miles of shoreline in Grand Traverse, Benzie,
Antrim, Kalkaska, and Manistee Counties.
Together with you, our volunteers and loyal donors, we have an ambitious goal
of positively impacting what our community values most: access to our region’s
majestic shorelines; safe, clean water; a sense of rural character; respect for
private property rights; and a healthy economy. Our cumulative efforts are
creating a lasting legacy for our region, and with your continued support, we
know the next twenty years will be as productive as the first.
As summer approaches, I look forward to seeing you out on the trails that
never fail to refresh our bodies and souls and that remind us of how lucky we
are to live and play in this northern Michigan paradise we call home!

oN CoMMUNITY AND BUSINESS RECREATIoN SURVEY
Since 1991, the Grand Traverse Regional Land
Conservancy has protected and cared for the region’s
natural, scenic, farm and forest lands and shoreline.
Since 1998, TART Trails, Inc. has been dedicated to
providing recreation and transportation opportunities
as well as preserving open space corridors through a
network of trails in the Grand Traverse region. These
two groups are now collaborating to gather public
input as to how assets specifically located along the
North US-31 Corridor (refer to map for specific area)
can be best maintained and utilized by the public.
An online survey (link to it from www.gtrlc.org until
April 30) will help us understand awareness and use
of recreational amenities like parks, non-motorized
trails, beaches, and natural areas in this region, and
will help assure GTRLC’s and TART’s future plans are
aligned with public desires for land use, non-motorized
transportation, and outdoor recreation.

MISTY ACRES
A Visionary Legacy
INVESTING IN LAND PROTECTION
Our newest preserve is not only a
remarkable natural treasure, it is
also a tribute to visionary people
whose deep ties and forward
thinking have protected that
treasure for all time.
The pivotal moment for this
property’s role in the future of our
region’s natural heritage came in
1991, just as the Grand Traverse
Regional Land Conservancy came
into existence with the help of
several deeply committed
individuals. Ted Curran, a founding
GTRLC Board member, was seeking
to connect the Conservancy to
philanthropically minded summer
residents who would have an
affinity for GTRLC’s mission. He
enlisted the help of Mollie Rogers,
who ran the iconic summer resort
at the west end of Crystal Lake
known as Chimney Corners. She
responded by hosting a high tea at
which the Conservancy’s new
Executive Director, Glen Chown,
presented the goals and needs of
the brand-new regional land trust.
A close-knit group of forwardthinking
women attended that
afternoon’s presentation,
confirming Ted’s insight and
Mollie’s standing as a community
leader. One of the guests who
heard Glen’s presentation that
afternoon was financial executive
and philanthropist Naomi Tudor
Borwell. Soon after the tea party at
Chimney Corners, Naomi made a
three-year, $15,000 start-up pledge
to GTRLC through the Borwell
Charitable Foundation, support
intended to match grants and gifts
from Rotary Charities and other
family foundations.
This important founding role was
just the beginning of Naomi’s
generous commitment to the
GTRLC’s mission. In 1997 she
pledged a significant lead gift for
land protection at the outset of the
Railroad Point Natural Area Project,
and then in 2003 she made a truly
extraordinary leadership pledge
to GTRLC’s Coastal Campaign,
which successfully protected
6,000 acres of land along the Lake
Michigan shoreline, including what
is now the Arcadia Dunes Nature
Preserve. On behalf of GTRLC,
Naomi opened her home and served as hostess
to gatherings designed to rally support for the
organization’s strategic direction and special land
protection projects. One of Naomi’s final gifts to
the Conservancy was a parcel of 35 acres adjacent
to the south boundary of our Betsie Dunes Preserve,
i n c l u d i n g a to w e r i n g b l u f f w i t h b e a u t i f u l v i ew s
of Crystal Lake.
The centerpiece of Naomi’s commitment to our work,
though, is Misty Acres. This 600-acre property, which
straddles the Benzie-Manistee County line, includes
more than 360 acres of
hardwood forest, 6200 feet
of frontage on the Betsie
River, and riparian wetlands.
It is also home to a small
herd of cattle representing
a breed originating from
Scotland known as Belted
Galloways. Naomi’s late
husband, Robert Carne
Borwell, Sr., spent his
childhood summers on the
shores of Crystal Lake. Bob
became a prominent Chicagoarea
executive in the insurance
and financial sectors and
continued to cherish visits
to our area until his death
in 1989, splitting his time
in the region between
Crystal Lake and Misty
Acres. Bob trusted the dayto-day
care of the farm to
Barry Reed, who is still overseeing operations there
after 37 years of service that included teaching
horsemanship to Bob Borwell’s grandchildren.
As Glen Chown recalls, Conservancy supporters
Chuck and Nancy Brickman hosted a gathering
at which Naomi first revealed her intention to
entrust Misty Acres to GTRLC as a bequest.
“It was Naomi’s ardent wish,” Chown says, “that
the property be preserved for all time by GTRLC,
and that it be open to the public and potentially
available for uses that would reinforce and
complement the Conservancy’s preservation

mission, goals, and strategic direction.”
Naomi, a sophisticated grantmaker and financier,
was aware that GTRLC would not be able to accept a
bequest like Misty Acres if the property came with the
potential to present a financial burden for the organization.
Accordingly, when she left Misty Acres to GTRLC in
her will, she also provided GTRLC with a dedicated
cash bequest that, invested in a long-term fund, can
function like an endowment by generating earnings
sufficient to offset costs for the care of Misty Acres.
Ongoing activities at a preserve like Misty Acres include
organizational commitments
to build and repair trails,
provide parking and signage,
preserve native plants, and
maintain the property’s
natural and agricultural
resources and infrastructure.
“Every acre of land that
we have protected over
the past 20 years requires
perpetual care, which is not
accomplished without cost,”
explains Chown. “To protect
a regional treasure the size
and complexity of Misty Acres
would not have been possible
for GTRLC without Naomi’s
foresight in providing the
resources needed to care for
the asset in perpetuity.”
GTRLC has launched an
18-month data-gathering and planning process designed
to evaluate the potential for future programs at Misty
Acres. The work includes the collection of baseline data
and development of decision-making criteria and
specific parameters for future programs and activities on
the property.
When Naomi Tudor Borwell passed away in May, 2010,
GTRLC lost a remarkable friend whose legacy gives all
of us a regional treasure to protect, nurture, and share.
We are deeply grateful for Naomi’s vision and
commitment and for the commitment at every giving
level that our valued supporters have shown.

accomplish this we need volunteer trail

Volunteers will learn a brief history
of the property as well as the technique
and theory behind sustainable trail
construction and layout, all while
experiencing a beautiful property adjacent
to Bellaire. After building consider visiting
our partners down at Short’s Brewing
Company to recharge and see the trail
progress charted on their huge map

CHALLENGE MET!
Last spring, The Carls Foundation awarded a generous multi-year challenge grant to match up to
$100,000 in gifts from first-time donors or increased gifts from current donors to our Conservancy Fund
which provides support for our land protection and stewardship programs.
More than 1100 supporters responded, either with new gifts or by digging deep and increasing their
giving by amounts ranging from $1 to $1000 or more. All told, these gifts totaled more than $500,000!
We are so grateful for the generosity of our donors and the vote of confidence from The Carls Foundation,
which has been a loyal supporter of our mission since 1991.
“Every day I am deeply grateful for the beautiful and pristine
area in which I live here on Old Mission Peninsula. I know that
today we need to provide for and protect this place so that
others may have the same privilege of enjoying it tomorrow. A
challenge grant needs to be met within a set time frame so that
it can be used for the greatest benefit for all. I am a Rotarian
and I have been on the City Opera House board and have seen
and experienced the greatly increased benefits realized by these
generous grants. Although I never knew Bill Carls, I do know his
family and have shared with them how much the preservation
of this particular area meant to him as demonstrated through
the ongoing support of his family foundation. I decided this was
a win-win for all of us to be able to enjoy the expansion of the
Pyatt Lake Natural Area and protect more of the Peninsula and
all of the region for the future.”
