NOVEL MOTTO
by Martin Davies
The arms illustrated on the cover were recently
granted to Mr Anthony Durrant; William Hunt,
Windsor Herald, was the agent. The rather attractive
design reflects Mr Durrant’s descent from the
Conynghams (shakefork), the Visitation family of Lee
(who had a fess checky in their arms) and the Eldreds
who had martlets in their arms. The lions allude to
Norwich and the coins to Mr Durrant’s profession as
an accountant.
The crest features a pharmaceutical balance and is
an allusion to his wife’s descent from three
generations of Norwich pharmacists who had a stone
2
phoenix above the sign on their shop.
Mr Durrant is particularly keen on the number 7
and has chosen to put that many roses on his badge
(which in the final design is surrounded by a blue
circle) representing his wife 2 children and 4
grandchildren.
Seven also features in the very unusual motto that
has been included, “TSAWIAG OSAHIAW FHIITPO
YHAEIAH” It looks at first glance like a rather unusual
mixture of languages. Is the first word possibly Welsh;
the last word Greek? In fact they are the initial letters
of the words in William Blake’s poem, Age of
Innocence: “To see a world in a grain of sand and
heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of
your hand and eternity in an hour”. The initials are
arranged in groups of seven.
Mottoes have a slightly unusual status in English
heraldry; although appearing in the illustration on the
Letters Patent they are not mentioned in the formal
blazon and, unlike other features of the design, do not
have to be unique to the grantee. Within this flexibility
they offer a wonderful opportunity for inventiveness
and the ingenuity shown in Mr Durrant’s motto is to
be warmly welcomed.
Arms of the University of Manchester
I’m afraid that I must disappoint Mr Fennely
(“Diocese of Manchester”, Heraldry Gazette, March
2008) when he writes:
“With the exception of the City and University
coats of arms, all of those shown have been
abandoned or superceded . . .”
In 2004, the (then) University of Manchester and
the University of Manchester Institute of Science and
Technology (U.M.I.S.T) abolished themselves and a
new institution (with a new Royal Charter) was
founded. Shortly after this, I noticed that this new
foundation had acquired a coat of arms and that this
coat was the arms of neither preceding body i.e. there
had been no transfer of arms. These new arms were
displayed, for instance, when the new University of
Manchester was formally opened by Her Majesty the
Queen.
Being a Manchester graduate, I was particularly
interested by this development and wrote to the
university asking for the blazon. I was told that the
details were yet to be finalised between the Office of
the President (i.e. Vice-Chancellor) and the College of
Arms!
Prompted by Mr Fennely’s article, I have written to
the university once more and I await an answer with
interest.
Dr J C Horton
Marital Arms and Honours
In issue 105 two examples were shown of marital
arms which seem to contravene an old and well
established custom. Until recently any married armiger
in receipt of an honour or who held a position where
the display of arms was appropriate, would remove
their wife's (or husband's) arms from their shield. To
do otherwise would give the false impression that
both partners held the office or had been invested
with the honour jointly. Mary Lady Soames's Garter
Banner on the cover of that issue tells the incorrect
visual story that her late husband, Baron Soames, was
a member of the order of the Garter as well.
Again, on p.12 the 2007 High Sheriff of
Lancashire has her arms in pretence over her
husband's as her shield of office. The presence of
Norroy and Ulster when the shield was presented to
be hung in Lancaster's Shire Hall suggests official
sanction for this.
There is a surviving coach panel from circa 1820
showing the full achievement of the Marquess of Sligo
which was quarterly of 63, and of his wife. As the
Marquess had been invested with the Order of St.
Patrick, the collar chain surrounded his shield.
However, as his wife was from an armigerous family
but not a member of the order her marital shield was
placed next to his with her arms impaled by his
quarters all over again. Apart from this being a classic
example of the Heraldry of the Decadence, the coach
painter had been forced to paint most of these
quarterings twice at a tiny scale and in oil paints and
gold leaf, an astonishing feat in itself, just to maintain
correct heraldic form.
Can any reader say when this custom of separating
marital arms was dropped and why?
Baz Manning
The main elements of the painting on the Marquess of Sligo's coach door. The other door is believed to have
been scrapped with the coach.
ARMS of BRIAN
NORTH LEE
Editor’s Response to
Correspondence from Alan Fennely
Alan wrote some time ago expressing some
uncertainty over the possible blazon of the arms of
Brian North Lee. I came across this explanation in the
September issue (52) of ‘Seaxe’ and feel sure the
Middlesex Society will be happy to share with Alan
and our readers.
‘Arms: Sable three billets in bend Argent overlapping
on a chief Vert three escallops Argent.
Crest: Upon a helm with a wreath Argent and Sable a
demi-African man Sable supporting with the dexter
hand a garb Or issuing therefrom a cross flory fitchy
sable mantled vert doubled Argent.
4
Motto: Amicos semper amat (He loves his friends
forever).
The rationale behind the arms is described by the
grantee. “The date of the grant was 27 December
2001, my 65th birthday. The billets represent in a
sense bookplates, on the subject
of which I've written many books.
The escallops stand for
pilgrimage, for throughout my life
I've visited pilgrim shrines. The
demi African man indicates my
having lived in Africa and ever
since kept in touch with Ghana.
The garb Or represents my
farming ancestry, for my forbears
were farmers in Leicestershire (notably at Barsby and
South Croxton) from at least the thirteenth century.
The cross simply designates my Christian faith. I liked
the green tincture to the mantling, too, since grass
and fields are green. The blazon of my armorial badge
is: A cross flory fitchy Argent fimbriated Sable
surmounted by a garb Or banded Vert”. The agent for
the arms was the patron of the Middlesex Heraldry
Society, Hubert Chesshyre, Clarenceux King of Arms.’
the dering roll
The British Library has told us that the Appeal for
funds to keep the Dering Roll in Britain has been
successful.
The Roll is a unique heritage item of very great
value for the study of British heraldry and history, with
enormous local and national significance, which will
not only greatly strengthen the Library’s existing
heraldic collections but will enable scholars to take
forward research and study on the content and history
of English heraldry. The Library received numerous
individual donations and pledges towards this
campaign, showing the strength of feeling and
support for this national treasure. It has expressed its
gratitude to the Heraldry Society for its support and to
all those who have made an invaluable contribution to
the Library’s fundraising efforts and made it possible
to achieve the target.
2008
The closing date for the submission of entries for
the 2008 Photographic Competition is 30th October.
An entry form is enclosed with this issue of the
“Gazette”. It sets out the rules of the competition and
the address to which entries are to be sent.
Council hopes that there will be a good response to
the competition this year. The theme is that heraldry
can be fun - Members should keep their eyes open for
quirky or amusing examples. They are out there!
Monday 17 and
Wednesday 19 November 2008
There are still a number of places available for a
remarkable opportunity when our Chairman, David
White, Somerset Herald, will be hosting two evening
tours of the College of Arms this autumn in aid of the
John Brooke-Little Memorial Fund. Both tours will
start at 6.30 and last until about 7.50, the majority of
the time to be spent looking at manuscripts in the
College’s Record Room. A reception with finger buffet
and wine will be held after each tour in the College’s
Waiting Room. Cost: £35 per head. Somerset is
giving his time free so it is hoped that these two
events will make a significant contribution to the J B-
CONGRATULATIONS!!
Canterbury Christ Church University officially
welcomed the founder of the Institute of Heraldic and
Genealogical Studies, Cecil Humphery-Smith OBE,
into its honorary fellowship at a graduation ceremony
at Canterbury Cathedral on Friday 9th May.
Cecil Humphery-Smith said: “Sixty five years ago,
my godfather, Canon Julian Bickersteth, who had
come to Canterbury as Archdeacon of Maidstone and
Canon Treasurer, began my association with the
Cathedral, applying my hobby to completing the
survey of its heraldry. Fifteen years later, he persuaded
me to pioneer the study of the history and structure of
the family as an academic discipline. This led to my
establishment of the Institute of Heraldic and
Genealogical Studies in Canterbury in 1961. This
honour is as much a tribute to Julian’s memory as an
educationalist as to the support of my wife, family and
colleagues in the success.”
Vice Chancellor of Canterbury Christ Church
University, Professor Michael Wright, said: “The award
of an honorary fellowship is intended to formally
recognise the exceptional service and achievements a
person has made in the fields of education and public
life.”
Mr Humphery Smith is of course a Vice President
and Fellow of the Heraldry Society.
A leading member of other national and
international societies he served as Président de La
Confederation International de Science Généalogique
et Héraldique from 1986 to 1990. He has also won
numerous awards, and in 2004, he was awarded an
OBE by HM The Queen for service to education in
genealogy and heraldry.
NEW PRESIDENT FOR CUHAGS
On 7th June the Cambridge University Heraldic and Genealogical Society held its Accession Banquet in Clare
College, Cambridge. The new President is Ambrogio Caiani, previously Secretary of the Society. He is succeeded
in that role by Richard Fellows. We wish them both every success in their new roles.
The splendid occasion was graced with the presence of no fewer than five Presidents and past Presidents of the
Society. Pictured above they are, left to right: Tom West, Monica Lee Morrill, Ambrogio Caiani, Katherine Clare,
and Antti Matikkala.
volunteer still wanted
In the June edition of the “Gazette” we noted that we
were looking for a volunteer to take over as Bookstall
Manager. We are still looking and the Hon.Secretary
would be glad to hear from anyone who feels they
could take on this role. The job consists of operating
the bookstall at lecture evenings and dealing with
orders for books and other merchandise we offer for
8
sale, primarily to members. We shall shortly be
upgrading our website so that orders can be placed
through it, so the person appointed to the job should
be familiar with the internet. If you feel you could
manage this job and are willing to do so, please
contact the Hon.Secretary.
The 2008 Annual General Meeting will be held at the
The production of the Lecture Programme card
this year was beset with problems, and it is deeply
regretted that in the end it contained two errors
and one ambiguity, for which we offer sincere
apologies. Adrian Ailes is of course a Fellow of the
Heraldry Society and not an Honorary Fellow. Dr
Malcolm Golin is not a Fellow of the Royal College
of General Practitioners, but is an Honorary Fellow
of the Heraldry Society. The omission is in respect
of David Krause, who is an Honorary Fellow of the
Society. The ambiguity is a comma in respect of
Martin Davies, who of course is a past Chairman
and a past Member of Council.
teachers wanted
The Council of the Society continues to consider how
to encourage interest in heraldry amongst young
people. In particular it is evaluating whether there
may be a role for heraldry information packs as a
cross-curricula resource for teachers planning lessons
and projects within the framework of the National
Curriculum. It would be extremely helpful to have
assistance in this from members who are teachers
currently working within that framework. If that
description fits you, please contact the Hon.Secretary
by writing to him at the Heraldry Society address or by
e-mail to honsec_heraldry@excite co.uk.
by the person concerned. Such a nomination and
lecture
programme
The 2008-09 Lecture Programme was thrown into
some confusion at the last moment because one of
the lecturers had to pull out just before the
Programme Card was printed. This necessitated a
fairly substantial re-ordering of dates since other
lecturers were unavailable for some dates. We are
most grateful to them for their forbearance whilst this
was all sorted out, and to Dr Paul Fox who gallantly
stepped into the breach to give a lecture on the
occasion left vacant after the game of musical chairs
was complete.
Dr Fox’s lecture will be given on Tuesday 7th October
on the subject “Pillars of the earth: the creation of a
great cathedral. The building of York Minster and the
heraldry which financed it.”
The venue for the September lecture by Mr Ralph
Brocklebank (“Creating Monsters”) has had to be
moved, since the Society of Antiquaries cannot
accommodate us due to the repercussions of the
installation of a new central heating system. The
lecture will now be held in the Lecture Room at the
Linnean Society, still at 6.30 pm. The entrance to the
Society is just to the left within the entrance arch to
Burlington House. It will not be possible to take wine
after this lecture.
