CERAMIC ART
Potters, ceramic artists, ceramic designers and visual artists work with clay. There are
many characterisations of clay that allow artists to visually shape their ideas. Clay is
soft, malleable and sensual, however after the firing process it is hard and impermeable.
The moulding is vulnerable and fragile whilst remaining sturdy and powerful. With clay
an artist’s emotion and perspective is clearly present in his or her work. Ceramics (like
textiles and glass) are being brought into the craft arts and applied arts. Ceramics
are associated with the expression and functional aspects of art. In a vase you can
stand flowers, from a cup you can drink and a pipe you can smoke. The ceramics in the
Netherlands are for the major part outgrown, yet the tradition in many cases is still
being held in honour.

story and certainly not on the technology that’s used. The use of additional features
has, for decades, been seen to both undermine and add value to the object. The key
characteristic of Dutch ceramics is the variety - a variety which is reflected in the work of
the members of the NVK, the Dutch Ceramics Association. The container beside the free
form, the pot next to the sculptural work. Utensils and tableware, vases, pots and bowls in
large numbers are enthusiastically made. Sometimes ceramics are made in small batches,
sometimes the industrial designers develop new products in large quantities for the mass
market. But human and animal figures, abstract sculptures and realistic objects belong to
the broad area of the ceramic artist. The members of the NVK move in the spectrum of
the ceramic and thereby use different types of clay, river clay and chamotte, from paper
to porcelain. They combine clay with other materials (wood, iron, steel, textiles and glass),
firing in electric, gas or wood kilns, glazes and Engobes added. In short, the Dutch ceramist
will always go his own way: traditional, innovative, experimental or conservative.
