By Nate Rosenthal
Minnechaug and Ludlow went
at it on the mats last week
and what resulted was a back
and forth affair that ended
with a Minnechaug victory, 42-40.
The Falcons spotted the Lions 18
points in the first three matches and then
responded by taking the next five. Over
the last six matches, the teams traded
wins and the lead changed hands four
times before Minnechaug escaped with
the victory.
Ludlow dominated the early going
with three pins in their first three matches.
Andrew Sarlan got the Lions on the
board with a win over Riley Jacobson in
the 106 class. He was down 6-1 after the
first period and still trailed 6-3 a minute
into the second when he got the pin on
Jacobson. That gave Ludlow a 6-0 lead.
The 113 division was another battle
with Ryan Wytas of Ludlow and Mike
Lemoine of Minnechaug. Wytas led 5-
2 after one and 9-8 after two. Then just
34 seconds into the third period, he got
Lemoine down and finished him off with
the pin to make it a 12-0 score. There
was much less drama in the 120 class
as Brandon Macznik got the pin on Tim
Garvey just 1:28 into the match. That put
Ludlow up 18-0.
Anthony Monteiro, 126 pounds, got
the Falcons on the board with a pin of
Nick Godbout at 1:47 of the first period,
just 13 seconds before the end, making
it 18-6. Nick Arroyo followed that with
a quick pin of Conor Harrington in the
132 group. That took just 18 seconds.
Then Jordan Paull won by forfeit in the
138s and now the meet was tied at 18-18.
The Falcons took the lead with a pin by
Cameron Servantez, 145, at 1:07 of the
first period over Luis Martinez. When
Joe Fearn won in forfeit in the 152 class,
Minnechaug completed its five match run
and led 30-18.
Brian Cormier then stepped up in the
160 group beating Sean Baker in a decision,
9-0. This was a battle despite the
9-0 final. It was 2-0 after one and 4-0
after two, Cormier seemed to take control
in the third and won the match to make
it a 30-22 score. Back-to-back forfeits
AGAWAM – Near halftime, Minnechaug
and Agawam were very close.
After the break, Minnechaug was nearly
silenced as the Agawam’s defense prevailed
in a 45-33 win over the Falcons.
Agawam was leading by five points
20-15 as the closing minutes of the first
half came, but Minnechaug rallied back
with a pair of baskets and a big threepointer
from Jane McWilliams.
The 3-pointer came with less than a
minute to go in the second quarter, and
Agawam led just 22-21 at the break.
Minnechaug came out swinging in
the third quarter when Kara Bruce nailed
a big 3-pointer to give the Falcons a lead
in the game. Caitlin McGregor would
then nail a basket to give the Falcons a
four-point lead.
Agawam would then start their big
rally beginning with a score by Danielle
Minnechaug’s Jordan Paull (138) uses a hold on his opponent to keep him
in place.
182. That put the Lions in front by a 34-
30 score.
The 195 match would turn out to
be the key to the meet. Joe Borowiec
pinned Mike Ferrere at 1:16 of the first
period. They gave Minnechaug a 36-34
led, but with Ludlow not having an entry
in the 285 pound two events away, the
Falcons were guaranteed to have at least
Stratton. She made a layup untouched with
5:00 remaining in the third quarter, cutting
the deficit to 26-24. Paige Preston followed
by nailing a crucial 3-pointer to allow Agawam
to retake the lead 27-26. Agawam
would not lose the lead after that.
After another defensive rebound,
Alycia Rackliffe got on the second half
board as she made a pair of free throws
to give the Brownies a 29-26 lead. Minnechaug
would then fumble another scoring
chance and Rackliffe would grab a
rebound and a layup.
Later, Rackliffe would then nail a
jump shot as the shot clock expires.
The Brownies would go on to play
stronger in the fourth quarter and Minnechaug
would be held to just three baskets
in the final 8:00 as Agawam would
come away with the win.
Agawam nearly doubled up on the
Falcons, with a 23-12 score in the second
half alone. Agawam got 17 points from
HOLYOKE – The Purple Knights
continued to stay hot as they took out
Minnechaug last Thursday night 84-51
in boys basketball action.
Holyoke and Minnechaug managed
to stay close early in the game before
Holyoke scored a few baskets in a row
at the end of the first quarter, and kept
the Falcons at arm’s length the rest of
the game.
The two teams starting the game
trading several baskets back and forth.
Each time Holyoke would get a slight
advantage, the Falcons would nip away
and come back.
Midway through the first, Endy
Sanchez nailed a 3-pointer and Guillermo
Godreau-Rivera followed that with a
short shot to put Holyoke up 14-9.
The five-point lead was Holyoke’s
biggest of the quarter. Minnechaug continued
to stay close until the end of the
quarter when Emmanuel Rivera nailed a
long trey with 36 seconds left to make it
21-15. Then Luis Vasquez hit another
3-pointer to make it 24-15 with 11 seconds
left and Holyoke had a comfortable
nine-point lead to end the first.
Vasquez would start Holyoke’s offense
in the second quarter with a short
jumper to make it 26-19. From there,
Hoyoke would go on a 22-4 run in the
second quarter.
Godreau-Rivera and Rivera each
scored 3-pointers and Justin White had
two baskets. Nate Rodriguez would
also score during the run.
The Purple Knights would then lead
