While Hokkaido is renowned
for its ski resorts and winter
snow festival, the capital Sapporo is
famed for its superior local produce,
dairy products and delectable
seafood on offer everywhere
7am Start the food feasting early
and head out to Nijo, a central fish
market (five minutes' walk from
Odori Station) which is open to the
public. The market is crammed with
local produce, such as crab and sea
urchin. Enjoy a filled-to-the-brim
bowl of the freshest catch over rice
for ¥2,500 (AU$32) at small eateries
such as Ajinonikou.
9am It was only in the Meiji period
(1868-1912) that Sapporo underwent
development as it became the
administrative centre of Hokkaido.
Urban planning was influenced
by foreign cities, and as a result
Sapporo has a grid structure atypical
to most Japanese cities. Walk among
the lush green avenues of Odori
Park, which runs directly through the
centre of the city and get a feel for
Sapporo's modern layout.
11am Go to the symbol of the city,
the former Hokkaido Government
Building, built in 1888. Made of
red brick, the neo-baroque style
of architecture is typical of Meijiera
monuments. Ten minutes'
walk away, is the Sapporo Clock
Tower. Built in 1878, it's the
oldest building in Sapporo, and
incongruously mid-west American
in appearance.
12pm A famed and much loved
product of Sapporo is the beer,
and the Sapporo Factory (12
minutes' walk from JR Sapporo
Station; tel: +81 (11) 207 5000)
summer
months
are the
best; odori
it started. There's a historic beer
hall that serves a type of microbrew
that's only available at the factory
and Hokkaido's most popular dishes.
There's also a museum, over 30
restaurants, and a shopping complex
perfect for buying souvenirs.
4pm Enjoy a breathtaking view of
the city from the Sapporo TV Tower
(five minutes' walk from Odori
Subway Station; tel: +81 (11) 241
1131) observation deck, which is
90m high. The 360-degree view is
simply gorgeous, and it's a popular
spot for couples at sunset.
6pm Head out to Susukino,
Sapporo's downtown. Hokkaido
is also renowned for its ramen
noodles, and the best place to
try them is at the Kouraku Ramen
Meitengai, the birthplace of miso
ramen. The alleyway has been there
since 1951, and has 17 ramen stalls
— considered to be some of the
best in Japan. We recommend stall
Ajinosanpei, a local favourite.
