Obsessive Nature
Part trend-setter, part trainspotter, chart-topping DJ
Calvin Harris tells JetAway about his split personality
There’s a duality at the heart of DJing.
On the one hand you’re the party starter,
coolly calling the shots from the centre of
the storm; on the other you’re a massive
geek fetishising vinyl and counting BPM.
Embodying this contradiction with
album-shifting aplomb is 27-year-old Calvin
Harris, the Dumfries-born producer/popstar
behind musical brain-worms Acceptable In
The ’80s, The Girls and this summer’s huge
number 2, Bounce. Harris has worked with
everyone from Kelis to Kylie, and been
dubbed both “the Caledonian Justin
Timberlake” and the “dancefloor Andy
Murray”. How’s that for duality?
“I’m a big fan of lists,” says Harris.
“Lists of people I wanna work with, lists
of tracks I need to finish, lists of possible
albums, tracklistings, EQ settings. I’m just
all about the lists.” He’s joking – we think
– although this mixture of obsessiveness
and abandon has been key to his success.
Before creating his DJ name (from R&B
legends Calvin Richardson and Andre
Harris), Adam Wiles was a small-town teen
taping dance shows off the radio. “I had
nothing else in my life that I was remotely
interested in,” he recalls. “As soon as
I discovered dance music, it was over –
that was the only thing occupying my
head.” The pastime became a career
in 2006 when Harris scored a record
contract with EMI through Myspace.
By the end of 2009 he had five top 10
hits, including the Dizzee Rascal duet
Dance Wiv Me, and had turned down Lady
Gaga (“What sort of a name is that?”).
“I always have a wishlist which I never
share with anyone because if they know, it
becomes embarrassing,” he says. “I shoot
for the stars, then take it from there.”
It was at this point that Harris’ rebellious
streak emerged. On an episode of The X
Factor in late 2009, he invaded the stage
during Jedward’s act holding a pineapple.
What the hell was going through his mind?
“I think the problem was nothing,” he says.
“I just wanted it to come to an end.” What,
your career? “It couldn’t end my career
because I can make a record wherever.
But that’s no justification for trying to ruin
a TV show. Terrible.”
Though he won’t take holidays himself
– “I don’t need days off from doing
something I love; I owe it to my younger
self to keep going” – Harris will be
soundtracking a few summers with sets
in Ibiza and Majorca. So what is it that
makes a great night out? “I don’t know,
there are unquantifiable things that go into
making your favourite club night, you can’t
quite put your finger on it or everybody
would be replicating it all over the world.”
Perhaps he should make a list. “I can’t go
overboard with the lists, I’d get confused.
I’d never get out of bed. I wouldn’t know
what to make a list of first.” MG
Calvin Harris plays Cream at BCM in
Majorca and Cream at Amnesia in Ibiza
throughout the summer. cream.co.uk
The Greatest Show On Earth
Roll Up, Roll Up!
Alegría’s Top Acts
Contortion: “The ultimate
8 JetAway
Debra Brown didn’t run away with the circus, but her
first foray into the world of sequins and somersaults wasn’t
exactly orthodox. She studied gymnastics from a very
young age, then took her passion for acrobatics through
to degree level before starting a career as a professional
choreographer. But it wasn’t until 1986 that her journey
with Cirque du Soleil began.
“I had been working with the same gymnasts for eight
years and I was thinking about the next step,” she recalls.
Encouraged by a friend to see Cirque du Soleil in action,
Brown snuck under the big top during the intermission
– and in that moment her life changed. “I was so surprised
because they were doing the same thing I was doing:
exploring the artistry of movement,” she says. “The next
day I spoke to the ringmaster and gave him my card. And
that’s how my wonderful journey with Cirque started!”
This autumn, one of Brown’s classic Cirque du
Soleil acts, Alegría, is playing at the Salzburg Arena
before heading off around Europe, stopping off in Malaga
(on 1 December) and cities in France early next year.
When this now-iconic production premiered in Montreal
in 1994, Cirque du Soleil was only 10 years old, and it
truly broke the mould. Although the title means “joy” or
“jubilation” in Spanish, Alegría was a striking departure flexibility test. There’s
from the Cirque’s usual style, with dark, theatrical
almost nothing these young
elements and spectacular gothic stage design.
contortionists can’t do.”
Brown worked with Alegría’s directors to create the most Fire-Knife Dance: “The tribal
imaginative material they could, but it didn’t happen knife-master spins blades of
overnight. “It could take between six months
fire around his body with
and two years to perfect a new act,” says Brown. “For perfect rhythmic focus.
Alegría we improvised a lot. Circus artists are unique; it’s Compelling viewing!”
important to explore who they are and what their strengths Power Track: “The climax of
are. The discipline they choose, the group or solo aspect, the show, this is all about
the risk element… all determine the time it takes to learn.” speed, timing, height
And how time has shaped the Cirque itself! What started and agility. A group of
as a humble collective of street performers 26 years ago is acrobats perform
now the world’s biggest spectacle, seen by 100m people staggering sequences
across five continents. Don’t miss your chance to join them of athleticism from
– the spectators, not the performers. GK
Kicking Against The Grain
Football and beaches are two of our
favourite things, but how often do you see
them together? Thanks to its spectacular sands
and passion for the beautiful game, beach
soccer was invented in Brazil (where else?)
in the early 1990s.
In the past two decades, the popularity of
soccer on the sand (FIFA has officially dubbed
it beach soccer not football) has escalated so
much that there are is now a biennial World
Cup tournament. This year’s competition will be
held in Ravenna, just over two hours from
Venice, from 1-11 September – and the home
team hope their national flair will take them far.
Massimiliano Esposito, the Italian team
coach, has been involved in the sport since
2005, and has marvelled at its transformation.
“Beach soccer has grown significantly, both in
the league and in the world,” he says.
While it requires similar levels of agility,
strength and skill, beach soccer differs greatly
from its grass-based namesake. “In beach
soccer, a match is not just a sporting event, but
also a show,” explains Esposito. “The players
are always trying to entertain the public.”
The excitement and flamboyance of this
new discipline has captured the attention of
some legendary players in recent years,
including Eric Cantona (who managed the
French beach soccer team to victory in 2005)
and Spanish strikers Michel and Julio Salinas.
But for the beach soccer World Cup to rival
the real one, the game needs to start producing
stars of its own. “The Federation has made
A U G U S T – O C T O B E R
a choice to try and produce ‘pure’ beach
soccer players. In the Italian team there are
no professional football players, they are all
amateurs who specialise in beach soccer,” says
Esposito, an ex-professional footballer himself.
This year (in fact, every year) the team
to beat is Brazil. Perhaps because of their
historical head start, the team has hoisted an
incredible 13 out of 15 World Cup trophies.
“Recently many other countries have really
stepped forward,” says Esposito. “I think
Russia, Switzerland and Portugal will be tough
competitors.” Still, “When talking about beach
soccer, everybody automatically thinks of
Brazil.” Perhaps it’s not so different to the
real thing after all. GK
relocating to a much larger venue: Birmingham’s NEC
It’s big, it’s brash and it’s all about the bikes at the
10th edition of the UK’s Cycle Show. This is your chance
to enjoy a sneaky peek at the latest trends, fashions and
product ranges from the world of cycling, with items
on show from more than 500 brands. Cycling in the
UK is currently enjoying a bit of a renaissance – think
Boris’ bike scheme in London and the popularity of
pedaling pros such as Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton.
In fact, Sport England recently announced that cycling
is now twice as popular as golf, and well ahead of sports
such as tennis and squash.
Yes, travelling by two wheels is pretty fashionable, and
the Cycle Show has responded to the rise in demand by
Arena (just 40 minutes from East Midlands Airport).
This year’s show will host BMX stunt performers as well
as separate mountain bike and road tracks where you can
try out the latest wheels for yourself, and the Kiddimoto
track where your little ones can pick up some cycling
safety tips. Some of the biking world’s biggest names will
also be present, including Olympic gold medallist Geraint
Thomas, who says, “The Cycle Show is a key event in the
UK’s cycling calendar, and this year looks set to be the
best one yet.” We can’t wait. CC
EVEN EVENTS INBOUND/OUTBOUND
Friday Night
Lights
Friday night in Leeds is
usually party time, but the
city is anxious to show off
its cultural side too. This
autumn, it’s inviting those
who usually leave nocturnal
Leeds well alone into the
centre for one night only.
On 7 October, Light
Night Leeds sees dozens
of museums and arts
venues opening late into
the evening. There will be
performances and a range
of events aimed at family
audiences, such as a giant
Donkey Kong projected on
to the side of a building.
“The public will have
a rare chance to see inside
some of the more secret
places in the city – with
dance performances in
prison cells, murder ballads
on barges, and light mazes
in dark tunnels,” says
organiser James Hill.
Light Night has done so
well in previous years that
it’s started a trend around
Britain’s cities. So what’s
this year’s highlight? “Light
emerging Scottish designer Jaggy Nettle (jaggynettle.com) have used Harris tweed,” says
Why clogs? The Dutch love their shoes, and there’s no other footwear says
Amsterdam quite like the clog. “This season’s styles have come a long way since
the traditional worker’s wooden shoe,” says stylist Carina van der Kloet. “The new
designs are architectural, elegant and innovative.”
How do I wear them? Take your cue from the streets. “Dutch people can be very
daring in the shoes they wear,” says van der Kloet. Stroll around the trendy
Jordaan or de Pijp districts to see how Amsterdammers are rocking the clog.
Vegging Out
Eat as much as you like while still getting
fit at this luxury vegan boot camp
I’ve enjoyed an aperitif of Champagne with
a fresh cherry in it and a four-course meal washed
down with some excellent Cahors wine. While
it’ll be no surprise to learn I’m in France, just
90 minutes drive from Toulouse, it’s hard to
believe I’m at a fitness boot camp.
“We’re not very good at deprivation,” says
Californian Craig Resnick, who runs vegan-only
Camp Biche with his wife Libby Pratt. The menu
is filled with food so rich and hearty you won’t miss
meat or dairy at all.
This must be the world’s most comfortable boot
camp – but boy, do they know how to work their
guests hard. Fitness instructor Elsa knocks on my
door at 6.30am, and by 6.45am I’m in the exercise
room overlooking the beautiful Tarn countryside
getting started on 648 ab crunches. By the end of
the week, I’ll be hitting the 1,000 mark.
After some more toning exercises, we have
a breakfast of granola and yoghurt before heading out
for the daily 15km hike – and it’s not even 9am.
Despite opting to hike in the slower group, my legs
are screaming by the end, and it seems inconceivable
that I will be able to do more exercise in the
afternoon. But after a hearty two-course lunch and
a doze by the pool, I am ready for aqua-aerobics, an
hour of pilates and an hour of yoga. Phew! Luckily,
just before dinner I’m treated to an hour-long
massage. The next day, it starts all over again.
“We aim to show people that it’s possible to
enjoy their food and still keep in shape,” says
Libby. “If you walk an hour a day, food is not the
enemy.” Men who stay at the camp lose an average
of around 3.5kg per week, and women around
1.75. Libby is keen to stress she believes it is more
important to reduce overall body fat – the week
I was there, one client achieved a reduction of
40%. As for me, I stayed three days, lost 1kg and
a couple of inches from my waist. And I hadn’t
eaten that well for a very long time. CC
Heard It On The Grapevine
For excellent-value wine, the Algarve is rapidly becoming a great place to raise a glass
Portugal’s most popular holiday destination is best known for
its beaches and golf courses rather than as a producer of great
wine. But all that’s about to change. While the region may not be
as established as others such as Douro or the Dao, it’s fast becoming
a big name in the production of tasty, well-priced plonk. In fact, it’s
this very affordability that has catapulted the region into the spotlight
in recent years: savvy wine drinkers don’t want to compromise on
taste and quality, but they are now more cautious about how much
money they spend on a bottle.
Already a well-established place to soak up the sun, the Algarve
has plenty to offer for wine lovers, including vineyards to tour, cellars
to visit and well-stocked shops to buy from. Here are our top tips for
a good-value tipple…
Mistletoe and wine
The first stop for tourists with an interest in wine is usually Adega
do Cantor, or “Winery of the Singer” (winesvidanova.com), in Guia,
near Albufeira. The singer in question is Sir Cliff Richard and, like
other celebrity wine buffs such as director Francis Ford Coppola,
he’s more than just a figurehead. Whatever you think of his music,
there’s no doubt he’s played a large role in helping to revive the area’s
wine production over the past few years. He even brought in the
16JetAway
pioneering Australian “flying winemaker” David Baverstock to add
a lighter touch to southern Portugal’s traditionally strong wines.
As well as producing some excellent reds, whites and rosés in
its Vida Nova range (prices start at just £6 a bottle), Adega do Cantor
also offers guided tours of the vineyards and winery, tutored tastings
and the opportunity to buy wines from its shop. And if you’re there
during the summer, you might even bump into the man himself –
Sir Cliff has a villa on the estate and spends a lot of time in the
winery and surrounding areas.
Splash of colour
At Quinta dos Vales (quintadosvales.eu) in Estombar near Portimao,
the combination of wine and art takes on a different form: the estate
is also a sculpture garden showcasing a variety of work from local
and international artists, and hosting temporary and permanent
exhibitions. The old cellar, meanwhile, is used for regular wine
tastings (try Grace Touriga Nacional 2008).
Deeper underground
For something a little bit different, head to the gothic underground
Cave de Vinhos at the Vila Vita Parc (vilavitaparc.com) in Porches near
Armacao de Pera. It houses more than 11,000 bottles of wine,
PHOTOS GETTY
lovingly tended to by the expert serving staff, and features bricks
imported from as far afield as Egypt. Book a table for dinner at
Vila Joya (vilajoya.com) in Gale, near Albufeira, and ask nicely for
a tour of the black-slate wine cellar and tasting room, which has two
cascades of water to keep the environment as cool as the clientele.
Food for thought
A little more remote, yet still only an hour’s drive from the
coast, the area around Beja in the Alentejo opens up even more
possibilities. Set in 1,465 acres of rural landscape including lakes,
fields, olive groves and, of course, vineyards, Herdade dos Grous
(herdadedosgrous.com) has a restaurant, bar and wine shop, an
outdoor pool and sauna.
For the more laidback, tours of the winery are topped off with
tastings of some of the vineyard’s finest reds, including the Reserva,
23 Barricas and Moon Harvested, the latter produced only by
selected grapes harvested for exactly one hour on the night of
the August full moon. Staying for lunch or dinner gives you the
chance to sample some of the traditional delicacies of the region
including lamb, beef and pork that has been farmed on the
estate, presunto (cured ham), morcela (sausage) and some
delicious local cheeses.
climate for wine. Below: Adego do
On safari
Next door (although that’s a relative term around these parts) is
Herdade da Malhadinha Nova (malhadinhanova.pt), a modern hotel
whose design provides a sharp contrast to the more traditional rural
charms of Herdade dos Grous. As well as tasting Malhadinha’s wines
(try Monte da Peceguina Red 2009) in the winery, shop or restaurant,
there’s a host of activities to keep you busy, from jeep safari tours of
the vineyard to treatments in the spa, horse riding, quad biking,
cookery courses and balloon rides.
Fill your bags
If you’re new to Algarve wine, why not look out for some of the
excellent wines from small independent producers such as Barranco
Longo, Frances and Paxa? The actual vineyards aren’t open to the
public, so head for Veneza (+351 289 367 129) near Paderne
instead, an award-winning, cellar-style wine shop with an excellent
restaurant attached.
The wines in this family-run establishment are arranged by region,
and the staff will be happy to help you put together a selection of
your favourites. They even offer a very reasonably priced shipping
service if you want to send a case or home to enjoy after your
holiday. Cheers! PR
Golden Tickets
The new venture from the man behind El Bulli is as
popular as you’d expect but nowhere near as pricey
FOOD & DRINK INBOUND/OUTBOUND
With candyfloss trees, tuna disguised as ham and
olives that aren’t really olives, it doesn’t take long to
work out that everything isn’t quite as it seems at
Tickets. This kooky restaurant just off Barcelona’s
buzzing Las Ramblas is the brainchild of El Bulli
supremo Ferran Adrìa and his equally brilliant brother,
Albert. Year after year, El Bulli was voted the best
restaurant in the world, but after closing its doors
for the last time this summer, the brothers decided
to turn their unique science experiment-style food to
the Spanish national cuisine: tapas. The result is
a restaurant that’s turned run-of-the-mill Spanish
classics on their heads. If it seems like magic, well,
that’s exactly what the brothers were aiming for.
As we walk into Tickets, a member of staff dressed
as a circus ringleader greets us and escorts us to our
table. The restaurant is plastered with pretend movie
posters and flashing fairy lights, planes made out of
Coke cans hang off the ceiling alongside huge hams,
and over in the corner sits an old-fashioned fairground
ice-cream cart. It’s quite a sight.
We spot Albert Adrìa working feverishly away in
the kitchen. He explains that Tickets aims to make
dining into a spectacular event: “The restaurant itself
is a performance, with the main star being the food
and we are the actors,” he says. “Our show is called
La Vida Tapa.”
It’s not a revolutionary idea to modernise tapas,
but here it has become a performance that’s witty,
funny and very theatrical. The waiters guide us through
the menu and handle our questions (“What exactly is
green apple air bread?”) with endless patience.
“The idea of La Vida Tapa is a global concept which
links gastronomy to a way of understanding life,” says
Albert enigmatically. “At La Vida Tapa there is no
place for boredom, sadness or loneliness, but there
is plenty for laughs, complicity and good company.”
This much, at least, is true. We laugh when the
“olives” we’ve ordered turn out to be some kind of
prank – they look like olives and taste like olives but
the texture is radically different. Paper-thin slices of
tuna arrive masquerading as sliced jamón ibérico, and
we grapple to pick them up with “Tickets tweezers”
(this place is far too high-concept for knives and forks,
although not high-priced – dishes start from as little
as £2.20). Oysters are served with a pipette full of
“essence of the sea”, while tiny, deep-fried rabbit ribs
are odd but delicious – salty, crunchy and dipped in
a rich garlic foam. A simple side dish of peas is
transformed into a theatrical event, brought to the
table in a clear bag that’s stabbed to exhume a gust
of pea and fresh mint steam across our table.
But it’s dessert that draws the loudest gasps: a live
tree topped with candyfloss, raspberries and mint
leaves to pick off and savour. For anyone who ever
dreamed of being Charlie Bucket in their very
own Chocolate Factory, this is the place. LM
AUGUST– OCTOBER
Coming Of
Age Drama
Having grown up in the media spotlight, it wasn't until Adele
turned 21 that she became number 1, says Matt Glasby
It doesn’t often happen with
record-smashing recording
artists, but it’s possible to
pinpoint the exact moment
that Adele Laurie Blue Adkins came
of age. At 8:15pm on 15 February
2011, the annual Brit Awards were
getting into their usual back-slapping
swing in London’s 02 Arena. Take
That had just stormed the stage with
renewed vigour, Robbie Williams
and a battalion of riot police, and
host James Corden introduced the
next act with the words, “If you’ve
ever had a broken heart, you’re
about to remember it now.”
Looking demure in her LBD,
Adele took the stage to sing the ballad
Someone Like You accompanied only by
a grand piano. As the song swelled, the
singer’s huge eyes filled up with tears
and a light shower of glitter fell. At its
close, she turned away overcome, bit her
thumb, then looked at the floor – still
modest, despite the stunned silence of
a 20,000-strong crowd and 5m viewers
at home. Corden’s pithy response
summed up what 5,020,000 people
were thinking: “Wow!”
The song went straight in at number
1; the album, 21, spent 11 consecutive
weeks at the top of the charts (a feat
unequalled by a female solo artist since
Madonna’s The Immaculate Collection in
1990); Grammys, Brits and worldwide
acclaim followed. The 22-year-old
girl from Tottenham had arrived
and, crucially, she’d done it the old-
fashioned, unfashionable way – by
being good, rather than controversial
(like Amy Winehouse) or cute (like
Duffy). “We’re a gender not a genre,”
says Adele, gently distancing herself
from her female contemporaries.
“Amy is hardcore, Duffy’s a proper lady. I’m
just really mouthy.”
Growing pains
For a purveyor of “heartbroken soul”, as she
terms it, Adele certainly laughs a lot – big,
guttural bursts that come out unedited
whether she’s being watched or not, like
those Brit Award tears. Indeed, her refusal
to be anything other than herself – downto-earth,
unpretentious; someone, in other
words, like you – has been key to her
capacity to cross boundaries. To Adele’s
unaffected eye, the Grammys were “long”,
21 über-producer Rick Rubin “looks like
Buddha”, and Malibu, where she and Rubin
worked on the new album, was “rubbish.
I’m allergic to the sun, so I can’t go surfing.
Every time I wasn’t in the studio I was
really, really bored.” There must have
been some plus points? “It was quite
funny Skyping my family,” she admits,
“Yeah, I’m in Malibu. Where are you,
Tottenham? Awww!”
Adele’s inability to think of herself as
anything out of the ordinary has lead to
some brilliant, Bridget Jones-style faux-pas.
When she performed on Saturday Night Live
in 2008 she thought to herself, “It would be
amazing if Tina Fey came on and did her
Sarah Palin impression. When we got there
the next day I was shouting, ‘Tina! Tina!’
But it actually was Sarah Palin.” Then,
at the 2009 Grammys, “when I won
my award, if you watch it, I almost go
to give Coldplay a hug because I think
they’re my dad or something”.
The way Adele tells it, she may as well be
a competition winner who lucked into her
Grammy-snaffling, Chris Martin-grabbing
lifestyle, but that’s simply not the case.
Born to a teenage mum in north London in
1988, young Adele would sing along
to the Spice Girls (“They made me what
I am today,” she says, apparently in earnest)
and Gabrielle (complete with an authentic
Gabrielle-style eyepatch), a populist touch
she’s never lost. She studied at Croydon’s
ADELE
Left: Adele’s triumphal –
Like You at the Brit Awards 2011
famous BRIT School alongside future
X Factor winner Leona Lewis (perhaps her
exact pop-cultural opposite) and Price Tag
singer Jessie J, before a three-song demo she
put up on Myspace got her signed to XL
Recordings. She took a friend along
to the first meeting expecting it to be
a hoax. It wasn’t.
Work in progress
Having released two singles, Hometown
Glory, about London life, and Chasing
Pavements, about late-night boy trouble,
and her first album, 19, Adele won the
inaugural Critics’ Choice Brit Award in
2008. “It was a bit overwhelming,” she
recalls. “I felt quite uncomfortable about
it all. It wasn’t actually like, ‘Oh, she’s won
a Brit Award because she’s done well,’ it was
everyone assuming I was gonna do well.”
The album duly went quadruple platinum,
but Adele remains healthily sceptical of the
industry that has made her a star. “Don’t
believe the hype,” she warns. “Just do it
’Twenty-one is an official
age, and I do feel like I’ve
really become an adult in
these last two years’
for the reason you started and not because of what
everyone’s saying. Make the music how you did
before anyone cared.” So how exactly does she
continue do that? Simple. “Close my eyes and hope
for the best!” There’s that laugh again.
Adele’s follow-up album, the more expansive 21,
was inspired by the same sort of thwarted romance as
Chasing Pavements. “Oh yeah, it’s all about one boy,”
she says. “Not the same one as 19, though.” Which
isn’t to say there hasn’t been some progression – not
least the fact that 21 went an incredible eight-times
platinum. “I didn’t want to call it 21 at first,” she
says. “I thought everyone would be like, ‘Ooh, she
ain’t got much of an imagination, has she?’ Then
I listened back to 19, and suddenly felt like that
it is properly two years later, and 21 is really an
official age, and I do feel like I’ve really become
an adult in these last two years.”
After that stunning Brit performance, the new,
grown-up Adele notched up the most impressive
achievement of her career: becoming the first living
artist to have two top-5 hits in both the albums
and the singles charts since the Beatles 47 years ago.
“I know this is a bit long-winded,” she says, “but
I hope by my fifth or sixth album it’s a record that
makes you say, ‘That’s Adele!’ I hope that my next few
albums are all a progression. I hope I never become
complacent and think that people will buy any old
rubbish I put out.” She can rest easy. If she keeps
belting out songs as beautiful as Someone Like You,
she’ll still be wowing audiences when she’s 64.
Adele will be touring throughout the UK this September.
a small piazza, we were sitting under a parasol,
contemplating the plate of tomatoes set between
us. I had never seen colours of such intensity –
cardinal-hued flesh, a pinkish spine, a faint yellow
to the pips, the plate dressed with only a gleam of
olive oil, a scattering of salt, a small twist of basil.
There are few countries in Europe where you can
eat so well, so vibrantly, and for so little money as
you can in Italy. Here, food is a matter of national
pride, but it is also a passion, a social glue, a daily
festival. This is a place where an ordinary dinner
can stretch abundantly into the night, a place where
a simple plate of tomatoes can acquire the kind of
luxurious qualities associated with the most gourmet
of dishes. And so my 10 days in the country,
ostensibly to see the sights of Rome, Florence and
Tuscany, soon became less about the Colosseum,
the Basilica and the Ponte Vecchio, and more an
odyssey of gluttony, a trip fuelled by tiramisu, fresh
peaches, soft bread and buffalo mozzarella.
There are ways, of course, to eat expensively in
Italy, but away from the busiest streets and upmarket
hotels it is more than possible to eat both cheaply
and sublimely. The first necessity is to acquire an
Italian approach to food – this is not a matter of
gobbling down a quick processed-cheese sandwich
between the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain,
but rather treating a meal with the respect it
Lunch is a serious business in
Italy and if you make no effort
to embrace it, you’ll never taste
Above left: fettunta, or toasted
deserves – a ritual of pleasure and texture and taste,
rather than merely the quelling of hunger.
In Rome excellent food is hard to escape –
a simple breakfast of coffee, freshly squeezed orange
juice and a pastry such as a ciambella or cornetto (the
Italian version of the croissant) often dunked in your
cappuccino will see you through till lunch when
the feasting begins in earnest. Lunch is a serious
business in Italy and the tourist who makes no
effort to embrace it will never taste the true flavour
of the country. For a serious Roman lunch, it’s
worth seeking out Sora Margherita, at 5 Piazza
delle Cinque Scole. It is small and signless and
crammed with tables, and the service is hardly
leisurely, but if you’re looking for an intensely
Italian dining experience, then this is the place:
ITALIAN FOOD
the fried artichokes are legendary, the fresh
fettuccine divine, their ability to transform the
most basic of dishes – cheese and pepper pasta, for
instance – into something downright exquisite is
positively mystifying. Be sure to order some stuffed
courgette flowers, leave room for the scrumptious
ricotta cheesecake, and take the brusque manner of
the waitresses as part of the authentic experience.
By mid-afternoon, you’ll likely be emerging
from the drowsy state induced by the delights
of Sora Margherita. At such a time, it is worth
remembering that there is no better way to
galvanise yourself for the evening ahead than with
a swift espresso. Jostle for service at the counter,
add a slug of sugar to your coffee and perhaps
partake of a sweet afternoon pastry. Remember
that it is cheaper if you order your espresso to
drink at the bar, rather than seated at a table.
At some point in the evening you may be
surprised to recognise the faint stirrings of hunger,
and a fine way to meet them would be a visit to
Forno Campo de’ Fiori (22 Campo de’ Fiori, +39
synonymous with pizza, this is your kingdom
come. This central Rome bakery has been in
business for more than 40 years, and makes the
most incredible pizzas. Cooked in 1.8 metre-long
batches, they feature simple yet delicious toppings
– from the homely charms of the margherita to
the much-celebrated pizza bianca (olive oil and
sea salt) with courgettes and the sweetest, milkiest
mozzarella. Queues are long and ordering decidedly
chaotic, but the food is brilliantly cheap and more
than worth the bustle.
Florence (80 minutes drive from Pisa airport) has
a very different character to the bustling energy
of Rome; the pace is more sedate, and the
restaurants reflect the mellow, rich and tasty
cuisine of Tuscany. Anyone visiting in autumn
would do well to try fettunta – essentially just
toasted bread drizzled with olive oil. This dish is
available all year round, but in the late autumn,
when the olives have been picked and oil is newly
pressed, the flavour takes on a particular fragrance
and intensity that is hard to equal.
Bread appears in a variety of cheaper Tuscan
dishes. Ribollita, for instance, is vegetable and bread
soup; panzanella is a salad of bread and tomatoes
with oil, vinegar and basil; and pappa al pomodoro
is bread and tomato mush, served lukewarm,
and considerably more delightful than it sounds.
The most common bread here is filone, which
is readily available in local bakeries and
characterised by its absence of salt, a tradition
occasioned by a 16th-century tax on salt by
Pope Paul III. An alternative is schiacciata,
On a whirlwind tour of Paphos, Mike MacEacheran finds himself falling
head over heels for the charms of Aphrodite’s legendary home
Love Is In The Air
PHOTO ALAMY
This is a love story. Not the
conventional type, involving
star-crossed lovers, bouquets
of red roses and bottles of
cheap rosé wine, but one concerning
a Mediterranean island and the hunt for
an elusive myth. I have travelled to
Paphos, on the west coast of Cyprus,
to retrace the footsteps of Aphrodite,
the Greek goddess of beauty, love and
sexuality. To this day, the stories of her
once world-famous cult draw hedonistic
visitors, honeymooners and hopeless
romantics – myself included – to the
island. Who said romance was dead?
Ever since the island’s association with
the contrasting sides of mass tourism,
Cyprus has had its own tumultuous love
AUGUST– OCTOBER
affair with British travellers. In the
1980s, peroxide blonde haircuts flirted
on peroxide blonde sands. Then came the
hedonistic days of the 1990s, when Ayia
Napa, on the eastern side of the island, was
invaded by the Vodka Red Bull brigade
searching for a post-Corfu clubbing fling.
It was an intense relationship that still
brings back happy memories to this day.
But while single partygoers still fly into
Ayia Napa during the summer months –
I wonder what Aphrodite would make of
pop goddess Lady Gaga? – the island now
attracts a different breed of visitor. Since
Cyprus’s reinvention, the Beckhams and
Leonardo DiCaprio have been among the
starry guests who have checked into Paphos
for some Caligula-style frivolity.
Jet2.com 41
PORTOFINO
CYPRUS
Then there are the real pros. Thousands of
loved-up visitors now visit the island every year to
celebrate their wedding nuptials, and with 327 days
of sunshine, it’s not hard to see why. Hotels such as
the appropriately named, five-star Venus Beach
Hotel (book through Jet2holidays.com), located
a short distance away from Paphos Harbour,
offer elegant and luxurious wedding packages
for a guestlist of 500, or a more intimate affair.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding this is not.
Romancing the stone
For the happy at heart, the best place to start
your tour of Cyprus is at Petra tou Romiou,
Aphrodite’s birthplace. Around 20km to the
east of Paphos, Aphrodite’s Rock is a sea stack
surrounded by sheer cliffs, pebbled coves and
clear waters. It may look like a gigantic wedge
of wedding cake but it was the first place
Aphrodite set foot on dry land.
The story goes that Mother Earth asked
Cronus, the leader of the Titans, to mutilate his
father Uranus, the God of the sky. Cutting off his
father’s testicles (yes, really), Cronus then hurled
them into the sea like two cricket balls, only for
the waves to engulf them. Then the sea turned
into Champagne-like foam, and Aphrodite
appeared from the waves and floated to shore on
the back of a scallop shell. To appreciate the sight
as the gods originally intended, check out
Botticelli’s painting The Birth Of Venus, which
recreates the equivalent Roman goddess’s arrival
on the Italian shore.
Come midsummer, Aphrodite’s beach becomes
an irresistible sun trap, the perfect place to seek
out a golden tan, turning milky skin into
bronzed, Adonis-style armour. Local legend
also states that those who swim around the rock
three times will be rewarded with everlasting
beauty. With the temperature turned up to
a sizzling 40 degrees, it’s impossible to hold
myself back from a nymph-like prance into the
sparkling sea.
Those in search of eternal youth may also
be enticed to travel to Polis, on the north coast,
to visit the grotto where Aphrodite used to
bathe. The waterfall and pool are overgrown
by juniper and fig trees, but the real reward is
the location. Hidden on the edge of the wild
and untamed Akamas Peninsula, named after
Akamantas, an Athenian warrior who came
here after the Trojan War, the peninsula is
breathtaking, with cliffs, gorges, Aleppo pine
woods, cobalt-blue Mediterranean coves and
tiny islands. The air is also different: it is scented
with jasmine and thyme – a world away from
the aroma of sunscreen and perfume you find
in Paphos.
42JetAway
Heights of passion
For the Cypriot locals, Aphrodite has become as
much a commercial entity as a classical myth: the
perfect marketing gimmick. You’ll find her
name scattered throughout Paphos, in places such
as the Aphrodite-themed water park (+357 26 913
638, aphroditewaterpark.com), where shrieks
from the vertiginous water rides would crack even
the sturdiest mirror. She also lends her name to
a nightclub, a classic car rally, an opera festival
and a real-estate firm.
Thankfully, central Cyprus has been left
untarnished by her narcissism, and a trip into
the Troodos mountains promises an altogether
different experience. Punctuated by Byzantineera
churches, limestone houses, olive presses,
donkeys and storybook characters (who really
wouldn’t be out of place in an anthropology
museum), these villages offer pastoral scenes
This spread (clockwise from
lighthouse; a Troodos mountain village.
Monthly or 2-weekly contact lenses need
cleaning solutions and a ‘rub and rinse’
centred around the local church or taverna. Each
is populated by cloth cap-wearing Zorba The Greek
stereotypes who put the world to rights while
playing chess; their wives working on oldfashioned
handlooms and crafting homemade
cheese from goats’ milk. Here, the sound of
mandolins replaces hardcore house. If you’re in
luck, you may even spot a rare moufflon, the
island’s indigenous mountain sheep, which looks
like the average British blackface sheep wearing
a set of DJ headphones.
Food of love
One of the many delights of Cyprus is the locals’
love affair with fresh produce and mezze. The
island is home to the world’s oldest continuously
produced sweet dessert wine, five wine routes –
even an olive oil museum (+357 99 565 768,
oleastro.com.cv). Halloumi cheese, one of the
island’s most famous exports, is everywhere and
treated with almost Biblical respect.
So, while Ayia Napa returns to its raucous parties,
I decide to retreat to Ta Piatakia (Nikodimou
Mylona, +357 25 745 017, tapiatakia.com), an
acclaimed restaurant in Limassol, Cyprus’s second
city, for an evening in the company of Roddy
Damalis, the island’s answer to Jamie Oliver.
With an award-winning restaurant, a bestselling
book and a TV series under his belt, the South
African-born Cypriot’s cookery is like a love
sonnet to the culinary wonders of local life.
“Greek and Cypriot mezze is one of life’s real
pleasures,” he says. “For me, there is nothing better
than visiting a local taverna with my family and
spending an entire afternoon just talking and
eating.” With the prospect of his feta wrapped in
filo pastry and drizzled in orange blossom honey,
duck garnished with walnut preserve, and Greek
coffee ice cream with cardamom syrup before me,
I feel like I may faint. I’d marry his caramel
cheesecake in a heartbeat.
I arrive back in Paphos as night falls – just
in time for cocktail hour. A cool sea breeze
beckons, coaxing me towards the seafood
restaurants beside Paphos Fort, where rows of
multicoloured Popeye-style fishing trawlers are
roped up by the dockside. Really, what could be
better than strolling along the harbour front with
a fairytale fort – from the days of Alexander the
Great – as a backdrop? Well, I am alone for a start,
but, feeling romance in the air, I couldn’t care less.
Aphrodite has done it again – my love affair with
Cyprus has only just begun.
With City and United both
winning silverware in May, the
new season will be the tightest
contest Manchester has seen
for decades, says Neil Squires
AUGUST– OCTOBER
Manchester City are no longer the punchline
of a series of cruel and long-running
football jokes. Fuelled by the petrol dollars
of Abu Dhabi, they are the FA Cup holders and
a Champions League side. For the first time in
ages, they’re serious contenders.
To the majority of Sky Blues supporters, being
in contention is good but not good enough. While
Manchester United still sit above them in the
pantheon of English football, a boil remains to be
lanced. It is difficult to assess which brought greater
joy to City followers last season – their first major
For all their cash, City
are still the little brother
flailing away at their
superior elder sibling
trophy for 35 years at Wembley or the fact they
beat United in the semi-final on the way there.
It I was a delicious double in a season which
also a brought third place in the Premier
League. Le But some of the gloss was taken off
their best season in memory by the fact that United
secured a record 19th title at a canter.
It has not n always been the case that City have been
the junior partner in this Mancunian kitchen-sink
drama but the status quo has prevailed for so long
that a generation gen has known it no other way. For
all their cash, ca City are still cast in the mould of the
little brother broth flailing away at a superior elder sibling,
who effortlessly effor keeps them out of range with
a condescending cond hand on the forehead.
It is 20 years since City finished higher
than United in the league. Then, with Alex
Ferguson’s Ferg distinctly average side distracted
by a successful European Cup Winners’ Cup
campaign, campa City, under Peter Reid, sneaked in
one place ahead of their arch-rivals in fifth. Could
2011/12 be the season when they finally earn the
right to look down on Sir Alex and the red half of
Manchester once again?
“United have been on top for decades now but
I think we are definitely closer. We are probably as
close as we ever were. I think everyone knows that
now,” says City’s Adam Johnson, who arrived from
Middlesbrough two years ago. “When I signed,
I knew I was joining something massive at City.
We could give it a huge push this season and –
who knows? – it could all change.”
There are reasons to be optimistic. United are in
a transitional phase after the summer retirements
of Edwin van der Sar and Paul Scholes. Ryan Giggs
turns 38 in November, and it appears that Rio
Ferdinand’s best days are behind him. It remains to
be seen how the football lesson imparted by a peerless
Barcelona team in the Champions League final
Jet2.com 49
FOOTBALL
will affect them. In comparison, Arsenal never
recovered after the most one-sided one-goal
aggregate defeat in the history of the contest at
the hands of the masterly Catalans last season. The
realisation that their own bespoke passing game
was so markedly inferior to Barcelona’s seemed
to significantly hit their self belief.
While it is hard to envisage United shrinking to
the same extent, being made to look so lame could
have its after effects. To win the big games in the
Premier League a side needs swagger and ego, and
United’s may have been damaged. If there are cracks,
then City should at long last possess the necessary
self belief to exploit them, having taken out United
at Wembley on that memorable FA Cup semi-final
day. But doing it over a season is very different to
doing it over 90 minutes.
If it were as simple as signing a cheque, then City
would have success guaranteed. Since the takeover
50JetAway
three years ago by Sheikh Mansour, a member of the
ruling family of Abu Dhabi, no one has signed players
quite so ostentatiously. The transformation of Eastlands
into Middle Eastlands has brought in a high-profile
manager in Roberto Mancini and high-class players
– David Silva, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany are
outstanding professionals by anyone’s estimation.
The City squad is strong and deep.
But with investment on this scale comes huge
pressure to deliver. How the multinational
collective copes with an expectation Manchester
United have lived with and thrived upon for years
will decide whether this is the year City soar. The
success of 2010/11 was overdue but it has now
become the base point.
“It was a very good accomplishment but it sets us
up well for phase two – phase two starts this year,”
says City chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak. “We are
delighted with the way this team has progressed
but our ambitions are much bigger than that. Now
that we are in the Champions League we need to
perform and progress, and that’s a big challenge. We
have won the FA Cup, which is great, but I believe
there are a lot more cups to win. And finishing third
in the Premier League was great but we want to
win the league. We have a taste for silverware now.
There are so many talented individuals in the
squad and a lot of heart. We have incredible
foundations for incredible years ahead.”
“Sheikh Mansour, in his timeline, always felt
that year four was the year we would go for it.
Frankly, I’m delighted for him that we are really
in that position. We can look at entry into year
four in a very strong position.”
The “noisy neighbours” to whom Ferguson
once referred are piping up again and this time they
represent a genuine obstacle to back-to-back titles
for United. Since the 2003/04 season, when Roman
Abramovich threw his weight behind Chelsea,
United have taken half of the eight Premier League
crowns on offer, Chelsea three and Arsenal one. City’s
emergence – and Liverpool’s revival under Kenny
54JetAway
The ‘noisy neighbours’
to whom Ferguson once
referred are piping up again
Dalglish – means United will be fighting fires on
more fronts than usual this season.
No one can doubt that United retain formidable
strike power. Any team with Wayne Rooney has an
enviable potency as he proved with his incredible
overhead kick to decide February’s Manchester derby
at Old Trafford. The scorched-earth pace of Javier
Hernandez (the “Little Pea”) is also a lethal asset.
But the deficiencies in United’s midfield that were
exposed so ruthlessly by Barca, Ferdinand’s unreliable
fitness and a change in goalkeeper leaves questions at
the back. United will be in the shake-up – they
always are – but do they have the edge to become
champions again? The family over the fence may
have something to say about that.
Water
Palaver
From oil rig restaurants to floating cat sanctuaries,
the canals of Amsterdam hold aquatic surprises
aplenty, says Mark Smith
L
ast year, the waterways of
Amsterdam’s central canal belt
were added to the UNESCO
World Heritage list on account
of their outstanding beauty. While few
would seek to deny the loveliness of
“the Venice of the North”, it’s worth
remembering that its delightful
waterways, enchanting islands and
chocolate-box bridges weren’t just put
here for postcard purposes – since
the golden age of international trade,
water has signified myriad shimmering
opportunities for Amsterdammers,
and little has changed today.
Marcel Ikelaar, the 44-year-old
manager of Waterwinkel (10 Roelof
Hartstraat, +31 (0) 20 675 5932,
dewaterwinkel.nl), Amsterdam’s
dedicated bottled water emporium,
offers me a welcome drink: “Would
you like a tea? Or coffee perhaps?” As
propositions go, this is a little bit like
entering a convent and being treated to
a full body massage. “Perhaps some of
the, erm, water?” I suggest, taking in the
floor-to-ceiling, backlit shelves displaying
more than 100 varieties of water from all
over the world, each tagged with the kind
of florid description usually reserved for
fine wines. An extraordinarily groomed
Ralph Lauren type is flashing his credit
card at the angelic white counter. Er, can
I have what he’s having?
In a word: no. “Some people are happy
to spend up to £20,000 on a bottle of
water,” Ikelaar discloses casually,
“particularly if it’s for a wedding or other
special occasion.” We’re surveying the part
of the shop devoted to “prestige” waters,
with limited-edition glass bottles of Evian
designed by the likes of Issey Miyake
and Paul Smith. A brand called Bling,
because its bottle is encrusted in Swarovski
crystals, is selling like hot cakes. Don’t
people know there’s a recession on?
Perhaps predictably, given the fact
that he runs a water shop, Ikelaar is
unconvinced by my protestation that
Amsterdam’s tap water – among the purest
in the world – is perfectly drinkable. In
fact, he looks horrified. “Even when they
filter out all the plastics, medicines and
impurities, water has a memory,” he
confides, conspiratorially, “It remembers
all the bad things that have happened to it.
Besides, water pipes are straight, and water
is not meant to travel in a straight line.
So it loses its natural energy.”
Another Amsterdammer who
understands the importance of water is
Talita Zuiderveld. Her previous job at
a major record label meant she was often
at the mercy of touring performers’
diva-ish drink demands: “They’d want
some obscure Fijian brand with added
oxygen or whatever. No problem – I’d
head straight for the Waterwinkel.”
Nowadays, she runs a music PR agency
called Poptart. Being self-employed has
allowed her the flexibility to indulge
another of her passions – cats – by
volunteering at another wacky, watery
Amsterdam institution, the Poezenboot
(+31 (0) 20 625 8794, poezenboot.nl).
Translating, literally, as “cat boat”,
this floating feline sanctuary is tucked
in between chi-chi houseboats on the
stately Singel canal, and has been
rehabilitating and rehousing the city’s
abandoned cats since 1966. I’ve passed
the unassuming brown structure
AMSTERDAM WATER
a thousand times, totally unaware of all
the moggies inside.
“But don’t cats famously hate water?”
I ask Zuiderveld, as she introduces me to
a cross section of Poezenboot’s pampered
inhabitants (the boat has a capacity of 50).
“Yes, they do,” she replies. “But here their
feet stay dry at all times, and they soon get
used to the rocking motion.” Across the
boat, a group of lunch-breakers are cooing
over recent recruit Sinatra, so-called
because of his mesmerising topaz eyes. It’s
easy to see how impulse adoptions might
be an issue, but Zuiderveld assures me that
potential adopters are required to make
multiple visits in order to demonstrate
their commitment. The boat’s walls are
festooned with snaps of happily relocated
graduates who’ve found proud new
owners – as well as their land legs.
I’d love to stay and play, but I have an
appointment with another very special
vessel. At this time of year Amsterdam’s
in Venice, in Amsterdam
arterial canal belt is teeming with handsome
pleasure boats, but few can draw admiring glances
like my ride for the afternoon – the city’s one and
only gondola.
Owner Tirza Mol was at carpentry school in 1999
when she felt the urge to take her graduation project
beyond the realms of wardrobes and parquetry:
“People are always referring to Amsterdam as the
Venice of the North. I thought, ‘Let’s make it
a reality!’” Six months and a trip to Italy later, she
had acquired the skills to build and operate her very
own 11-metre gondola, much to the bemusement
of her Venetian mentors: “The profession really is
a closed shop, reserved mostly for men from certain
families. They really didn’t know what to make of
this Dutch woman with a mad dream.”
Barefoot and elegantly attired in loose black
garments, statuesque Mol, who’s also a part-time stilt
walker, certainly looks the part as she punts us with
seemingly effortless strokes through the still waters.
Apart from sporadic boozy blasts of O Sole Mio from
pedestrians, it’s an incredibly serene and romantic
experience. It’s certainly easy to see why the
immaculate, black-lacquered boat has been the site of
so many marriage proposals over the years, and why
the likes of Zuiderveld have hired the gondola to
transport their seen-it-all charges from hotel to stage
door: “I delivered Marianne Faithfull to [legendary
music venue] Paradiso when she was last in
Amsterdam,” says Mol. “She really was delightful.”
Celebrity namedropping may come in handy
when attempting to secure a table at my next stop,
a restaurant so eagerly anticipated that it’s booked
out every night from its scheduled opening in
mid-July right through to Christmas. Dwarfing
everything in its vicinity, including the floatingcity
where, five years later, it’s to reopen as an upmarket
eatery offering incredible panoramic views over the
the city’s industrial suburbs.
My guide is Wouter Slot, a 29-year-old project
manager from Concrete, the Amsterdambased
transformation: “It’s a dream project for an
architect,” he explains as we cling to the metal
the kind of place I’m going to bring my kids and
tell them, ‘I had a part in this.’” You can see why.
the ingenuity of its inhabitants when it comes
facilities, a holiday here costs a mere fraction of its
high-rent neighbours. Val Cenis makes a great
low-budget base, especially for novices who’ll
love the longest newbie trail in France and the
two beginner kindergartens. The lovely stone
houses of Bonneval sur Arc are hidden over the
hill from heavyweight Val d’Isère, and Orelle
is now linked to Val Thorens, offering a quiet
backdoor to the massive Three Valleys. Just try
to keep it to yourself.
Chamonix, France
Basically the Alps on steroids, Chamonix’s reputation hangs on the spectacular
peaks that surround it, and it has more to offer the hardcore crew than any
ones are Brévent, Flégère and Le Tour.
On the checklist for any strong skier is the Vallée Blanche, a guided day-long
tour that involves a few hairy steps hanging on to a rope followed by hours of
cruising through speech-defying snowscapes. Stop for lunch at Refuge du
Requin to admire the magnificent Géant glacier. Extreme boarders should
Calblanque Nature
A short drive south of La Manga, the
Calblanque Nature Reserve is a 13km
stretch of unspoilt coastline – one of
the few in Spain – boasting beautiful
beaches, quiet coves, rugged walks,
strange rock formations, salt flats and
pine forests. Wooden walkways carry
you through the dunes, and on the
outskirts of the park are the remains
of old silver, copper and tin mines.
Its crystal clear waters are a draw for
scuba divers. Quite simply, it’s one of
the most spectacular areas in Europe.
Declared a national park in 1987,
and then a nature reserve in 1992,
Calblanque features amazing wildlife
such as eagles, woodpeckers, rare
eagle-owls (known as Bonelli’s eagles),
and endangered sea turtles. There’s
a network of footpaths through the
hills, but for the energetic, the 15km
Ciudad Encantada,
Mazarrón
Situated beneath the foothills of the Sierra
de la Almenara, the Bay of Mazarrón has
around 35km of beaches and coves, and is
a beautiful spot for relaxing in the sun or
exploring the ocean.
On the beach at Bolnuevo, to the
west of the main settlement, Puerto de
Mazarrón, the wind and water have
carved out some of the weirdest whimsies
of nature you’ll ever come across: the
Gredas de Bolnuevo, also known as the
Ciudad Encantada (enchanted city). Over
the years, the wind picked up salt water
spray from the sea and fine grains of sand
from the beach, sculpting the sandstone
into phantasmagorical formations. Some
look like gigantic mushrooms about to
topple from the slim columns that support
them; others have the appearance of
winged totem poles that could take off
like a Paleolithic monster with a good
wind behind them. A series of vertical
faults and the presence of clay loam has
allowed for uneven erosion over time,
and created a honeycomb effect.
Stunning at any time of day, the
formations are especially beautiful when
seen by the light of the evening, the gold
of the sandstone absorbing the last of the
sun’s rays. Take a stroll or a bike ride along
the promenade to watch the sun setting on
these intriguing natural oddities.
Cartagena Harbour
Cartagena’s ancient natural harbour
has recently undergone a revamp
thanks to massive investment from
the Spanish government. The port,
where Roman and Phoenican ships
dropped their anchors some 2,000
years ago, is now a buzzing area
for taking a leisurely paseo (stroll),
soaking up the sun or sampling some
of the region’s finest cuisine.
View the picturesque port from the
sea by hopping on the barco turístico.
The boat sets sail every half hour
between 1.30pm and 3.30pm from
alongside La Patatcha floating
restaurant, and costs around £4.50.
For an alternative view of Cartagena,
climb to the top of the hill past La
Concepción Castle. The hike is hard
but worth it for the breath-taking
views of the old bullring, cathedral
and glittering Med.
Meander along the docks and you’ll
come across Isaac Peral’s submarine.
It’s not much to look at now, but this
grey tube was one of Spain’s greatest
nautical innovations. Designed by
Isaac Peral y Caballero – the “father
of the modern submarine” – it was
the first to be electrically powered
and to be able to fire torpedoes
underwater. Despite successful tests,
it received a critical report from the
all-powerful Board of Evaluation in
1890. The engines and torpedo tubes
were removed, until eventually all
that was left was an empty shell.
Gran Casino, Murcia
If the magnificent entrance, with its rose marble
pillars and heroic allegorical bas reliefs, isn’t enough
to convince you that you’re entering a building
of grandeur and significance, then the Islamic
splendour of the Gran Casino’s patio Arabé will.
This isn’t a casino in the sense of a gambling joint,
but a gentlemen’s club – and it’s as kitsch as kitsch
can be, filled with exuberant and intricate designs
in all the colours of the rainbow.
One of the most delightful rooms is the tocador
señoras, or ladies’ powder room. Gilded chairs and
mirrors line the walls, but it’s the ceiling that
draws the eye – and the gasps – as it’s painted
with youthful maidens with bright butterfly
wings skittering across a sky of deepest blue.
The piéce de résistance is the salon de Baile, inspired
by the palaces of Louis XV. The ballroom,
meanwhile, is a confection of gold moquette,
with a stunning painted-silk ceiling. Find out
more about the history of the casino by taking the
informative multilingual audio tour.
After a major refurbishment, the restaurant has
recently reopened, specialising in Murcian cuisine
with a creative slant, or you can just sip a coffee in
the delightful patio azul. Later this year there will
be a salon de té serving homemade cakes.
Looking Up
Northern cities are supercharging their economies with clusters
of successful firms in high-growth industry sectors, says Ian Wylie
Many Northern cities have been forecast
a miserable future because of spending cuts
and their dependency on public-sector jobs,
yet recent reports by HSBC/The Future
Laboratory and Centre for Cities have
identified the likes of Leeds and Newcastle
as “super cities”, poised to deliver greaterthan-expected
growth and job creation.
Newcastle
Just across the Tyne Bridge from Newcastle,
Gateshead is becoming a hub for the digital
and media sector. Herb Kim, founder of the
annual Thinking Digital Conference, doffs
his cap to Gateshead City Council. “Its
work creating icons such as the Angel
Of The North, the BALTIC Centre for
Contemporary Art (above), the Gateshead
Millennium Bridge and the Sage Gateshead
music centre says that Gateshead is serious
about valuing digital, creative and cultural
76JetAway
industries,” he explains. A new Northern
Design Centre will give the city another
method of attracting digital and design
companies. Kim’s one to watch is Cumron
Ashtiani of Atomhawk, a company which
has worked with Newcastle-based TH_NK
to develop artwork for the new JK Rowling
online presence, Pottermore.
Leeds
Historically, Leeds has always been
a commercial centre, with bankers, brokers
and advisors supporting the trades. But
the growth of building societies and
insurance companies in the region has
created a strong financial services cluster,
which has weathered the recent storms.
“We have a great skills base here, which
is supported by the universities, colleges
and experienced professionals who can take
on all types of work,” says Howard Kew,
chief executive of Financial Leeds. Kew’s
ones to watch are the Leeds, Yorkshire and
Skipton building societies, which are in
the vanguard of the revitalised building
society movement.
Manchester
Across the Pennines, five BBC departments
have moved to MediaCity in Salford,
building on nearby Manchester’s rich
broadcasting heritage. “I’m particularly
excited about BBC Breakfast’s move to the
region next year, as this is a five-day-a-
week show – a juggernaut that will provide
masses of opportunities,” says Maureen
Walker of Northwest Vision and Media.
“Opportunities will reverberate throughout
the North as a whole.” Walker’s one to
watch is Firestep, a subsidiary of Impossible
Kids, whose recent commissions include
a pre-school version of University Challenge.

MONTE-CARLO OR BUST
If you’re looking to retire in the sunshine, then you
should consider checking out the microstate of
Monaco. A recent survey put the lavish enclave, just
25 minutes from Nice, top of the life expectancy
list, with typical residents living to the age of 89.73
– 20 years longer than the worldwide average.
Although this is unsurprising given the
standard of living the yachting hot spot offers,
what’s even more surprising is that you don’t
necessarily need serious capital behind you.
HOLE IN UN
The announcement that
the Golf National course
in Versailles will play host
to the 2018 Ryder Cup is
great news for second
home owners.
Along with hot spots
such as Spain and
Portugal, golf enthusiasts
could now be heading
to France to tee off.
Reports suggest that
up to 100 new golf
courses are set to be
developed between now
Savvy investors are snapping up property in the
French town of Beausoleil, which is literally just
across the street from Monte-Carlo. Here you can
buy into the lifestyle of the rich and famous for
around a quarter of the price of similar properties
only a few steps away. It’s just as well – last year
a 1,600 sq m, three-bedroom penthouse with
views across Monte-Carlo harbour sold for
a record-breaking £199m!
TURKISH
DELIGHT
This year will see Turkey
continuing to grow as
a promising location for
property buyers. As the
country continues to
buck the recession,
experts are predicting
that property prices
in the south-western
beach resorts could
double in the next
few years.
Bodrum and Dalaman
are two areas where the
Turkish government is
hoping to increase and
develop tourism – annual
visitor figures continue to
grow and have risen by
4.3m since 2007.
Alex Francis of UK
website Travelmatch says:
“Figures indicate summer
2011 will be all about
Turkey. This is due to the
greater number of flights
to resort areas, but there
is no denying the
country’s unique appeal.”
and 2018, with France’s
registered players paying
an annual fee of around
£3 each towards a special
fund to subsidise the
construction.
French golfer Jean van
de Velde said: “This is
a dream come true. If you
had said 25 years ago
this would be coming
here, people would have
laughed. Golf is now the
sixth-ranked sport in
France, but it has
massive potential.” PHOTOS GETTY

Topping the list for ladies’
REGION’S GREETINGS
In partnership with Leeds Bradford
International Airport and Marketing
Leeds, Jet2.com flew over French
wine experts to taste the produce
at Leventhorpe, Leeds’ very own
vineyard. The connoisseurs flew
in from Bergerac in the Dordogne
Valley, an area renowned for
its wine, as part of efforts to
strengthen ties between the areas.
PAELLA IN THE SKY
Jet2.com is giving Scottish sun
worshippers something to shout
about by launching five new routes
from Glasgow Airport to Spanish
holiday hot spots Barcelona,
Ibiza, Lanzarote and Malaga,
with 2012 flights to these new
destinations on sale now.
To celebrate the launch, the
airline has teamed up with
a local tapas restaurant, Barca
(barcatapas.co.uk) on Princes
Square, to create the world’s
first haggis paella. Ian Doubtfire,
managing director of Jet2.com,
George Bowden (below left) from
Leventhorpe Vineyard commented:
“While wine-making in Yorkshire
might seem unusual, wine has
been produced in the region since
the 16th century so we’ve got some
good heritage, and Leventhorpe
has been producing fine wines for
the past 25 years.”
Following a tour of Leventhorpe
and the chance to taste some
commented: “What better way to
celebrate the launch of four new
Spanish sunshine routes than by
creating our own unique version of
paella, fusing two iconic national
dishes to give people a flavour of
these great destinations?”
locally produced wine, the visitors
were treated to a civic lunch with
Alan Taylor, lord mayor of Leeds,
and a tour of the city.
The project celebrated
Jet2.com’s weekly flights to
Bergerac and the beginning of
English Wine Week. Flights start
from £29.99 one way including
taxes and operate through the
summer until 24 September.
Jet2.com News
The paella was taste-tested
by Jet2.com’s Glasgow team
members Andrew Marshall, Paul
O’Hara and Lesley-Ann Ferguson.
Lesley-Ann said: “I thought haggis
and paella was a bit of an unusual
combination but when I had some
it tasted great – the mild spices
in the haggis really complemented
the flavours in the paella. I think
it’s a fantastic way to mark the
launch of the new flights from
Glasgow and we hope plenty of
Glaswegians will soon have the
opportunity to enjoy their very
own taste of Spain!”

AUGUST–OCTOBER
LEADERS OF THE PACK
Jet2.com, the North’s leading
leisure airline, has asked its 940
cabin crew and pilots to reveal
their expert packing tips.
Main luggage
• Roll it up – roll your clothes
instead of folding them to use less
space and keep them crease-free.
• Stuff your shoes – roll your socks
into balls inside your shoes so
they keep their shape.
• Weigh it up – invest in a set of
luggage scales so you don’t go
over your airline’s baggage weight
limit. Jet2.com and Jet2holidays
offer a generous 22kg baggage
allowance, but many other airlines
offer only 15kg.
• Keep your valuables close –
Jet2.com’s 10kg hand baggage
allowance means that items
you don’t want to pack in
your case can travel with you
in the cabin.
• Don’t stress – don’t get wound
up by packing as Jet2.com has
the most commonly forgotten
items for sale onboard, such
as sunglasses, cameras and
phone chargers.
Hand luggage
• Make copies – photocopy your
passport and travel insurance
documents then keep the copies
in a different bag so if you
lose the original you still have
all the details you need.
• Dress for your destination –
take a swimsuit or change of
clothes in your hand luggage
or at the top of your suitcase.
With Jet2.com many flights arrive
in time to be able to enjoy an
afternoon at the beach, or some
city sightseeing.
SAFETY ONBOARD RESPONSIBLE FLYING WITH JET2.COM
Safety & Comfort
Most of the following guidelines are
mandatory under Civil Aviation Authority
Regulations to make sure your flight is safe,
comfortable and enjoyable
SAFETY ONBOARD
Knowing what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency could
make all the difference to you and your family. The safety
information card in your seat pocket and the cabin crew’s safety
briefing gives you vital information on the location of exits and
emergency equipment. As this can vary from one airline to
another it is important to pay attention to the safety briefing and
read the safety card each time you fly. Our crew are specially
trained to ensure your safety and security at all times. It is an
offence to refuse to obey any lawful command of the captain or
cabin crew. Our primary concern is YOUR safety at all times.
MOBILE PHONES
To prevent interference to the aircraft communication and
control systems the use of mobile phones or any other wireless
communication devices is restricted onboard. Mobiles must not
be used for internet access, text messaging or voice calls while
onboard the aircraft. If your device is fitted with a “flight mode”
or something similar you should switch it to this before the
aircraft doors are closed to prevent any accidental transmission
or reception.
SEATBELTS
Seatbelts protect you from injury and you are recommended to
keep your belt fastened throughout the flight, and must do so
whenever the seatbelt sign is switched on (during taxi, take-off,
landing and turbulence). Adjust the seatbelt so that it is tight
but comfortable with the buckle the right way around so that it
can be easily released. Infants travelling on a passenger’s lap
will require an infant seatbelt, which our cabin crew will happily
fit for you.
SMOKING
Smoking is NOT PERMITTED on any of our flights, and for the
safety of all our passengers the toilet compartments are fitted
with highly sensitive smoke detectors. Violation of this law may
lead to prosecution and a substantial fine.
ALCOHOL
Please bear in mind the fact that high altitude increases the
physical effects of alcohol, so moderate consumption is
recommended. It is illegal to be intoxicated onboard an aircraft.
86JetAway
The consumption of any alcoholic beverage onboard other than
those that have been supplied from the in-flight bar is not
permitted and the crew are authorised to remove alcohol from
passengers drinking from their own supplies.
PASSENGER BEHAVIOUR
Jet2.com expects our passengers to behave in a responsible
manner and we will not tolerate unacceptable behaviour. This
includes foul language and any other behaviour that reduces
other passengers’ enjoyment of the flight and causes them,
or our staff, any degree of distress, discomfort or unnecessary
inconvenience. We reserve the right to ban passengers from
future flights if their behaviour is a threat to the safety of our
passengers or crew.
HAND LUGGAGE
One small piece of hand luggage is allowed per person, providing
its weight is less than 10kg and it is no larger than 56cm x
45cm x 25cm including wheels and handles. Any piece of
baggage that does not meet these requirements will be placed in
the hold and the relevant fee will be charged. Any other excess
hand luggage will be placed in the hold. Light or soft articles
should be stowed in the overhead luggage compartments,
heavier items under seats. Items lying loose on empty seats or
obstructing the aisles or emergency exits are dangerous and you
will be asked to remove them.
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
Once the aircraft is at cruising altitude and the captain has
turned off the “Fasten Seat Belt” sign, you are free to use
laptops, CD players, MP3 players, computer games and most
other electronic items. The use of electronic equipment of any
kind is not permitted during taxi, take-off and landing.
COMFORT
Changes in the cabin air pressure may cause some slight
discomfort in your ears. You can relieve this by swallowing hard,
yawning or holding your nose while gently breathing out with
your mouth closed. Flying also causes your body to dehydrate so
you are advised to have something to drink that is not alcoholic.
For your further comfort, please try to stretch your legs and arms
as much as possible throughout the flight.
IN-FLIGHT SERVICE
On your flight we will be offering you a comprehensive choice of
hot and cold drinks as well as a selection of delicious snacks,
including sandwiches and confectionery. Full details of our
onboard products can be found at the back of this magazine.
We kindly ask all passengers to help keep the aircraft tidy by
not placing rubbish in the seat pockets or on the floor. Our cabin
crew will be collecting rubbish throughout the flight, so please
help them to keep the aircraft tidy.
