IF THERE’S ONE THING Woody Allen does well,
it’s create a spectacle. Through his anxious, introspective
characters (usually proxies for himself)
and his personal life, he’s had ample opportunity
for that sort of thing. You could argue that it’s
kept the notoriously neurotic fi lmmaker in
business for years. But there may not be any
WHEN A LATE-NIGHT WALK
IN MIDNIGHT IN PARIS LANDS
THE JAZZ AGE, HE LEARNS
THAT KEEPING TRACK OF THE
LOST GENERATION CAN BE A
BIT OF A CHALLENGE.
intellectual spectacle greater than a meeting of a whole mess of artistic and literary
heroes in one place, at one time. That’s especially true when those heroes were known
for drinking absinthe until they couldn’t see straight, in Paris, close to 90 years ago.
In Allen’s latest, Midnight in Paris, Owen Wilson plays Gil, a successful Hollywood
screenwriter and aspiring novelist who, while visiting France’s capital city with his
fi ancée, Inez (Rachel McAdams), is repeatedly transported by unexplained magic into
Paris in the roaring ’20s. There, Gil gets down with Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso,
Salvador Dalí and other luminaries, who have the combined eff ect of making his own
existence seem intolerably dull.
That so many expat American and European artists became acquainted in 1920s Paris
was due in large part to the social machinations of writer Gertrude Stein (Kathy Baker) of
“rose is a rose is a rose” fame. Essentially the Kevin Bacon of her day, she invited nearly every
notable painter, poet, photographer and writer living in Paris to one of the infamous “salon”
parties at her lavish Le Bank apartment. But without having been to one, you might
fi nd it hard to tell everyone apart. That’s why we made this handy chart, which explains
how all the artists knew each other (we even stuck Woody Allen in there for good measure).
Just think of it as a much-coveted social introduction from Stein. START PLAYING Ú

Stein and her siblings purchased many of
Matisse’s early paintings and urged their
infl uential friends to do the same.
While they were lifelong partners, Toklas made the
mistake of outliving Stein, was cut off from her wealth
by Stein’s executors and died in poverty.
Stein’s art collection had a surfeit
of Picassos, and he was often at
her parties.
In the mid-1920s, Dalí met his hero, Picasso, who
helped inspire the mustachioed one’s signature
surrealist style.
Like many other expats,
Stein sat for one of
Man Ray’s photos.
Dalí and Buñuel
collaborated on
Buñuel’s twisted
1929 fi lm Un Chien
Andalou. You know:
the one with the
eyeball.
Parisian saloon-keeper Ada “Bricktop” Smith,
whom Porter often hired to give dance lessons at
his lavish parties, appeared in Allen’s Zelig.
Picasso and Matisse,
championed early in
their careers by Stein
and her art patron
friends, became
bitter rivals through
the years.
The famously macho novelist once referred
to Baker as the “most sensational woman I
ever saw.”
Hemingway’s dying character in “The Snows
of Kilimanjaro” quotes from Porter’s 1933
song “It’s Bad for Me.”
Hemingway made his then-wife Hadley
sit with Toklas when they visited Stein. He
called Toklas “nice, but scary.”
Zelig begins with a scene in which Allen’s
character and the hard-partying Great
Gatsby author discuss the social classes.
Buñuel briefl y worked as a second-unit assistant
director on Baker’s 1927 black-and-white silent
fi lm trifl e Siren of the Tropics.
Porter introduced the Fitzgeralds to his
friends Gerald and Sara Murphy, who created
a hub of artistic debauchery at their manse.
Hemingway once
called Eliot: “A
damned good poet
and a fair critic, but he
can kiss my [backside]
as a man and he never
hit a ball out of the
infi eld in his life.”
Hemingway disliked Zelda for cheating on Scott
with a French aviator. (Who can blame him?)
In Zelig, Allen stands
next to the African-
American “it girl”
dancer and actress in
a newsreel clip from
the 1920s.
The painter and the pianist met on the French
Riviera through Porter’s American friends,
Gerald and Sara Murphy.
Hemingway savaged his old drinking buddy
Fitzgerald in his memoir A Moveable Feast for,
essentially, being a wuss.
F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, were
regular visitors at Stein’s salons.
Hemingway used Stein’s era-defi ning expression
“the Lost Generation” in The Sun Also Rises, but
the two later had a falling out.
The works of Man Ray and Picasso were
celebrated at the fi rst-ever Surrealist exhibition
in 1925; both attended the fête.
Man Ray snapped a well-known picture of his
friends Dalí and Buñuel that has them making
“wild eyes” at the camera.
