Welcome
Note
Welcome aboard.
Thank you to all our customers who voted Jetstar
among the best low fares airlines in the world at
the Skytrax Airline Awards. We were awarded Best Low-Cost
Airline in Australia/Pacific and a top-three position in the
Global Low Cost Airline category.
This year’s Skytrax Annual World Airline Survey, on which
the awards are based, had more than 18 million individual
respondents from 100 different nationalities so we’re very
proud of our ranking.
It was only eight years ago we launched Jetstar with 13
aircraft. Now our fleet stands at 90 and continues to grow.
Back then we offered travellers our low fares on 31 routes;
now you can choose from more than 120. We’re creating
more capacity and carrying more passengers than ever. Over
20 million people flew safely around our network in the last
financial year — that’s almost the population of Australia.
But for me, the best thing about our growth is that
we’re doing it while continuing to focus on the quality of
our customer service. The Skytrax Airline Awards win is
testament to that.
We’ll keep offering you the lowest fares and carrying
Byron Bay surf festival sweeps in yet again with three days
of surf-related art and activities. We chat with headlining
professional tandem surfer, simon phin
What makes Byron Bay’s
surf culture so special
to you?
Byron Bay is hard to beat. It’s a
great place to learn surfing in a
safe environment. The people of
Byron are warm and welcoming,
and the local food and produce
is great. There’s more choice
than you can poke a stick at!
What’s the first key skill
that you’ll Be teaching
Budding tandem surfers?
Three starters: be safe, have
fun and make the girl look
good! Other than that, we do
want people to appreciate that
tandem surfing is about sharing
the stoke and Aloha of surfing.
as them.
Where have you caught the
We really enjoy Indonesia. Bali
GOOD LOOKS
the inaugural townsville fashion
festival will be styling up the city.
We chat with committee president,
katelyn aslett
What inspired you to start
a fashion festival
in toWnsville?
As a designer, it’s important for me
to break the stereotypical notion
that remote cities do not have an
idea about fashion. We love our
relaxed lifestyle but this doesn’t
make us a backwater. There’s
a wonderful, vibrant, creative
fashion scene in our regions, both
established and emerging, that
needs to be supported
and encouraged.
a fabulous new designer, Mainie,
who has a beautiful collection
based on indigenous artwork.
There will be collections with a
distinctly northern feel that suit
our relaxed and tropical lifestyles,
and glamorous evening pieces.
Was it hard to orGanise
such a huGe event?
The first year is always difficult,
as we have to prove ourselves
to non-believers. For all of us
as volunteers, it’s been hard
to find all the hours to make it
happen while still running our
own businesses and jobs. There’s
been so much to learn and do,
but we’re all trying to create a
lasting legacy.
comfort food, some chefs
are serving up home-style
dishes for two, or more,
to share
Newcastle
Robert’s Restaurant has always
been one of the Hunter Valley’s
loveliest dining rooms — a
rambling, vine-covered building
with open fireplaces and a
high-ceilinged dining room
full of heavy wood with large
windows overlooking the vines.
“nothing is
nicer than
sharing
a meal”
The recent arrival of chef George
Francisco has lifted the food up
a notch or two with dishes such
as grilled aged Rangers Valley rib
eye with garden salad, shoestring
fries, green beans, Béarnaise
sauce and jus (AU$125).
George says: “Nothing’s nicer
than sharing a meal. It can be
romantic or just friendly. A large
cut of beef is perfect for sharing,
and is more flavoursome — slow
roasting it develops even more
flavour. It also fits with my
passion for a return to the old
ways of cooking.”
Sydney
Chiswick, Matt Moran’s latest
restaurant, set in the grounds of
Chiswick Gardens, is a great spot for
a nibble and a glass of wine or a full
3-course meal. The star of the kitchen
is a wood-fired oven and many
of the ingredients come from the
restaurant’s vegetable garden. One
of the most exciting features of the
menu are the dishes for two or more
to share such as roasted whole dory
with little neck clams, curly kale and
lemon (AU$56); beef, pearl onions
and ale pie (AU$58); and woodroasted
Moran family lamb with chick
peas and mint (AU$59). 65 Ocean St,
There’s a fire pit at the heart of
MoVida Aqui — it’s fired up before
lunch and burns well into the night,
with dishes such as arroz negro
(Spanish rice cooked with cuttlefish
and squid ink) cooked on it. This black
rice, similar to paella except slightly
soupier, is served with aioli (garlic
mayonnaise) in two sizes: grande for
2-4 people (AU$63), or muy grande
for 4-6 people (AU$85). Spaniards
love cooking over coals, especially
for a group — this is a great way to
get a taste of Spain in the heart of
Melbourne. Level 1, 500 Bourke St,
The menu of the newly-opened Bistro
Guillaume Perth has two dishes
designed to share: roasted whole
Liveringa organic chicken served with
Guillaume’s famous Paris mash and
tarragon jus (AU$75) and White Rocks
veal rack with Jerusalem artichokes,
pommes Parisienne and horseradish
cream (AU$95). Overlooking the
lavish Las Vegas-style resort pool and
tropical gardens, the restaurant has
a relaxed, modern French provincial
feel. The first Bistro Guillaume is in
FASHION
ACCENT
Bayda newton, jewellery
designer for fashion
reflection, tells how to
accessorise with style
What’s hot this season?
Big bold styles, lots of sparkle
and colour. We have been
playing with all the soft colours
coming in this season like coral
and turquoise as well as brighter
shades — jazzing them up
with swarovski crystals, cubic
zirconia and enamel.
What are your top tips
for accessorising?
We all know the saying
“accessorise, accessorise,
accessorise” but there is that
fine line of overdoing it. try and
find a focus point — this could
be a large choker or a coloured
crystal statement piece. Don’t
try and combine too many pieces
as your feature piece will get
drowned out. Wear multiple
necklaces or mix it up with
a large pair of earrings and
numerous chunky bracelets.
What kinD of Designs Do
you create?
there is something in our
range to cater to everyone’s
taste. We stock pieces ranging
At school all I did was fill up my
I live and work in my studio so it’s a
end up painting because that’s how I
live my life: the tactility, expression,
feel and energy.
What made you open your
oWn gallery?
I was at a café next door when the
for-lease sign went in the window.
My friend said, “Your work is selling
well, maybe it’s time to aspire
higher?” I’m only just finding now
how many people have collected my
work. Now I can meet the people
who have always supported me.
Why do you think people are
so draWn to your Work?
The icons I draw are symbols that hit
people’s memories quickly. Everyone
has a story about Paris or Kings
Cross. My birds are a conscious
contradiction to the craziness of city
life, because they’re free and can
escape. The view above the cities is
about a bigger perspective, to look
“i live and
work in
so it’s a
constant
down on the human condition and and
how frantic the machine is.
you have a high-profile
are you most proud to have
painted for?
It’s great that my pictures are
appreciated by people who have
huge life experience and an eclectic
world vision. Lionel Richie bought a
painting depicting Sydney’s Taylor
an overview of Paris, so the style has
universal appeal.
T
elevision personality Sonia
Kruger is just as you’d imagine.
She has a high-wattage smile,
incredibly fit physique and a
larger-than-life personality.
On the day of our interview
at Channel Nine’s Sydney
headquarters, she’s welcoming, engaging
and excruciatingly fashionable in an ontrend
floral shirt with studded collar and
slim pastel blue pants. On her, it works.
It’s 11am and she’s just finished shooting
her two-hour live TV show Mornings with
co-host David Campbell (who pops his
head in to say hi). She shows not a hint of
fatigue under her camera-ready makeup,
even though she’s now juggling a two-show
schedule that sees her filming Mornings
in Sydney and Big Brother on the Gold
Coast. She certainly has the whole travel
caper down pat, and she rattles off tips at
lightning speed.
“Put your deodorant in your handbag, not
in your luggage,” she advises. “Hairspray:
also in your handbag. Always take your
shoes off when going through security. Don’t
contemplate it, just do it. I don’t travel with
iPads or laptops. Be as compact as you can be.
She’s also seamlessly transitioned
between TV networks, having been the
host of Seven’s Dancing with the Stars,
where she shone as bright as Tina Sparkle’s
sequins. In fact, some fans still call her
Tina — her mean-girl character in Baz
Lurhmann’s Strictly Ballroom.
“Some people still see me as Tina and I
love that,” Sonia says. “I mean, that’s where
I got my start.”
In fact, she’s forever grateful that it
propelled her to a life in the spotlight.
“Tina gave me a bit of a back-story,” she
says. “The first job I got in TV was on Simon
Townsend’s Wonder World. They had
7,000 applicants for a reporter role, and I’m
convinced I got the job because I had just
been in Strictly Ballroom.”
Did Tina’s garish, my-eyes-are-hurting
dance outfits plant the seed for Sonia’s
"i could take the
safe option in
fashion but i'd
get bored"
“Oh yes!” she says. “That, and I was
dressing up in ballroom costumes from
age nine.”
Dressing up is something she still gets the
chance to do on Big Bro. On the first show
she wore Balmain silver lame pants and
matching military jacket [David Campbell:
“Adam Ant called, he wants his jacket
back”]. But, she concedes: “You are never
She adds: “I think she’s one of the
As is Kerri-Anne Kennerley, from whom
Sonia and David have taken over the
coveted 9am morning TV time slot.
“Kerri-Anne’s always been such a great
she’s an all-rounder — she can do hard
With little downtime, you might be
“I like Real Housewives (all of them!),
“It’s the first time social media
It took a change of channel
Words ADAM BAIDAWI
Spine-tingling
S
good
moments are rare in
life. Melbourne Festival
director Brett Sheehy
still remembers his — it occurred
one night in 2005, when the
audience in the Sydney Opera
House Concert Hall was
hushed to silence by a thrillingly
eccentric performer.
“When he took to the stage and
first opened his mouth, I felt this
collective tingle through 2,000
people,” says Sheehy. “You could
have heard a pin drop. Nobody
could believe the sound that was
coming out. He lifted the roof.”
The voice belonged to Antony
Hegarty, and it was the year his
band Antony and the Johnsons
first captured mainstream
attention. In September 2005,
the album I Am A Bird Now was
awarded the UK’s most prestigious
songwriting award: the Mercury
Prize for Album of the Year.
Sheehy started a crusade to bring
Antony back to Australia, while
the rest of the world caught on to
the musician’s affected brilliance.
With the curtain falling on
Sheehy’s four-year tenure as
Melbourne Festival’s artistic
director, Antony Hegarty — and
his room-silencing vibrato — will
return to Australia once more,
this time solo. His latest work
is the MOMA-commissioned
Swanlights — a hybrid
performance of voice, orchestra
and visuals. (Antony will also
showcase his film Turning and art
exhibition Paradise.)
Years later, the man with the
voice hasn’t lost his knack for
shocking people silent. A New
York Times journalist gushed,
after seeing Swanlights, that
he’d “never heard a Radio City
audience keep so silent”.
The rest of Sheehy’s 2012 offering
is also a joy; perhaps his most
dynamic and accessible curation
of international and local artists.
Having been involved with festivals
in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne
for over 15 years, his swansong is
appropriately extensive.
“It’s my tenth and final festival
for Australia,” explains Sheehy.
The curator’s bond with
Australian arts has stretched
decades and as he prepares to join
the Melbourne Theatre Company
(theatre is his first passion), he
leaves Australia’s festival circuit in
a more spirited state.
“Before Australia embraced
“More than any other entity in
Australia, festivals launched the
That’s the way of the future. It’s
really, really exciting.”
Indeed, 2012’s festival will
host a number of ambitious,
multi-disciplinary — and even
multinational — projects. A
world premiere will see China’s
“It’s an Australian, Chinese and
Kiwi collaboration, and something
the festival has been able to create
from the ground up,” explains Sheehy.
“I think the dance program is incredibly
strong. This festival is an amazing example
of contemporary Australian dance, featuring
all-women choreographers. These works are
pretty special.”
Elsewhere, young Palestinian and Israeli
pianists Bishara Haroni and Yaron Kohlberg
will perform together in a “transcendent plea
“I want this to be a celebration,” says
Sheehy. “Not just of the Melbourne Festival
the country.”
With many shows completely free, and
others starting at AU$25, it’s a brilliant
tell why they love Australian
Indigenous works
“Aboriginal art is about telling stories”
VIVIEN ANDERSON GALLERY
Vivien Anderson, Gallery Owner
A specialist on aboriginal art, Melbourne’s Vivien
Anderson Gallery educates the wider community.
Why do you love aboriginal art?
Like most people before 1980, I had no school-age
education in Australian Indigenous history or culture. I‘d
not met an Indigenous person. When I began to manage
the Aboriginal Artists Gallery in Melbourne the culture
was foreign to me — even how to pronounce artists’
names. But I was captivated by the beauty of the art and
that it is a visual language. It’s about telling stories and
passing knowledge in a rich culture. I soon realised I’d
work with Indigenous artists for the rest of my life.
What are some stand-out Indigenous art techniques?
There are so many regional variations. Arnhem Land’s
geographic beauty is reflected in its bark painting, where
designs are executed on bark in locally sourced earth
pigment. Arnhem Land artists adhere to strict cultural
protocol, which tells what they are allowed to paint. What
they do with that limited opportunity is incredible.
What artists do you showcase in your gallery?
We represent many artists, some working in remote
communities in the Great Victoria Desert — like the
Spinifex Arts Project and Tjungu Palya Artists — as well
as in eastern Arnhem Land. Others are more urban.
Can you recommend a great emerging artist?
I’m fascinated by Theresa Baker, who paints with Tjungu
Palya Artists. She’s the grand daughter of the late artist
Jimmy Baker and the second generation of Tjungu Palya
Artists, based at Nyapari, a very remote art community
on the tri-state border of NT, WA and SA. She has
originality, technical skill, and an intuitive sense of colour.
Where should people go to learn about aboriginal art?
Visit the Koori Heritage Trust in King Street, Melbourne.
It is a rich resource for the Indigenous culture of South
Eastern Australia. In Darwin, visit the Museum and Art
Gallery of NT and Outstation Gallery in Parap. In Cairns,
visit Umi Arts, Kick Arts and Canopy Art Space.
What should they read?
The National Gallery of Victoria bookshop has books by
Judith Ryan, our senior Curator of Indigenous Australian
Art. Try: Art and Land, Images of Power and Mythscapes.
Explain your gallery’s philosophy.
It’s imperative to us that Indigenous Australian artists
feel secure and in control of their careers and work.
Our gallery is a signatory to the Indigenous Code of
Conduct, which educates about ethical and commercial
arrangements with Indigenous artists. We encourage our
artists and colleagues to also become signatories.
KATE OWEN GALLERY
Letitia Sutherland, Gallery Manager
Three floors of contemporary aboriginal artwork pop
with colour at Sydney’s Kate Owen Gallery. The gallery
has over 1,800 works, from major artists such as Clifford
Possum to up-and-coming and affordable artists.
Why do you love aboriginal art?
There is something about it that draws you in, something
ancient — maybe a connection to the past and the future.
It’s not just here and now.
What themes in aboriginal art most resonate with you?
Important women’s ceremonial sites in the Western
Desert speak volumes to me. Some time ago, I was given
the “skin” name Napaltjarri by a Western Desert artist,
Tjawina Porter. She told me that her and her sister,
Esther Giles, were my cousins and that Margaret Lewis
Napangardi was my grandmother. Margaret often travels
with her grandson Liam, who she affectionately calls my
“little brother”.
What artists do you showcase in your gallery?
We have artists from all around Australia, but the most
popular with visitors are artworks from the Utopia,
which is an area north-east of Alice Springs covering
approximately 3,400 square kilometres. Utopian art
came to be recognised as the originator of brightly
coloured paintings, when other areas kept to browns and
ochres, although it is not limited to Utopia now. One of
Utopia’s best known artists, Emily Kame Kngwarreye,
048
The barman at Angelina
put Australian art on the map internationally after she
prefers his cocktails
took up painting at the age of nearly 80 years old. shaken Her not stirred
half-brother, Kudditji, is believed to have influenced
her last series of paintings.
Who is a great emerging artist?
Although not a young artist at 86 years old, Kudditji
Kngwarreye (pronounced goo-beh-chee and called
Goob) has gone under the radar for a long time. His
half-sister put Australian art on the international map
but Kudditji is yet to reach those dizzying heights.
Often likened to Mark Rothko, the Russian-American
colour abstractionist, Kudditji’s style is unique and
instantly recognisable. He is known for depictions of
his Dreamings, particularly those related to the law of
the Emu ancestors. Now Kudditji’s Dreamings have
profoundly evolved into extraordinary juxtaposed
colour fields, startling in both composition and hue;
harsh or soft and often surprising to the Western eye.
Describe your gallery’s philosophy.
As one of the largest commercially run Indigenous
art galleries in Australia, we have a broader range
than you will find in any one place. We source quality
works and are a founding member of the Indigenous
Art Code and ArtTrade. Look for the Indigenous Art
Code logo to ensure you are purchasing works that
will ethically benefit the artists.
THE MASON GALLERY
Debra Mason, Curator
The Mason family has had ties with
the art community of Arnhem Land for
three decades. They lived in Arnhem
Land for 20 years and their kids grew
up as locals, becoming art collectors
themselves as adults. The art at their
Darwin gallery is collected primarily
from the Papunya, Kintore, Kiwirrkura
and Utopia, Eastern Desert areas.
Why do you love aboriginal art?
I love the art’s raw diversity and the
great cultural significance it has to
the aboriginal people.
What themes and symbolism in
aboriginal art resonate with you?
I particularly engage with circles,
which symbolise rock holes and
water — as this is the most significant
resource to the people.
Is there a particular artist you
champion most in your gallery?
Patrick Oloodoodi Tjungurrayi from
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY
Michael Shafran
I’ve scraped myself from bed at an ungodly hour so I can
shadow restaurateur Jimmy Shu through Darwin’s Rapid
Creek Markets. A maze of grower stands teem with freshpicked
greens and fruit sold by Filipino, Tamil, Thai,
Vietnamese and Chinese growers. Jimmy is doubling
as my guide as he sources local edibles for his Indian-
Nyonya-Thai dining institution, Hanuman, enthusiastically
highlighting everything from snake gourds (“great for
stuffing”) to ash melons, Asiatic centella leaves and rose apples.
“Look at this,” enthuses Shu, pulling a stalk from a small
mango. “It’s so fresh, the sap is still seeping out.”
We enjoy an impromptu moveable brunch through hawker
stands, sampling minced pork-stuffed Thai chicken wings and
just-extracted Sri Lankan string hoppers from the standout
Amma’s Kitchen. Fresh-squeezed Vietnamese lime and honey
frappes wash it all down. It’s apparent what makes Darwin
one of Australia’s most interesting dining destinations: its
body might be in Terra Australis, but its soul is in Asia. Hell, to
puddle jump to East Timor is quicker than a commuter flight
between Sydney and Melbourne.
With that in mind, I’m on a mission to discover Darwin’s
ethnic food haunts. For a lowdown, I contact blogger Tuan
Nguyen, who runs the top-rated Darwin Foodies blog. He has
me join him at Sari Rasa, a tiny Indonesian café with neon-lime
walls, tucked inside an office building. Headscarf-clad women
laugh and cajole as they serve up hearty plates of three dishes
and rice for a mere AUD$12. I fill mine with a comforting mix
of spicy dried beef, chilli eggplant and beef rendang, plus a cup
of earthy, gritty — and enjoyable — Indonesian coffee.

TO MARKET, TO MARKET
As we dine, Tuan says Darwin’s markets are a must. “You get
some interesting characters, and the food’s cheap,” he says. It’s
also a weekly tradition for many Darwinians.
So I start with the biggest of them all, the Mindil Beach
Sunset Markets, held every Thursday and Sunday evening
during the dry season (May to October). A highlight is
Top End Delights’ ice creams and sorbets, made with local
tropical fruits; from a chocolaty black sapote ice cream to a
dragonfruit sorbet. I also try charcoal-grilled souvlaki from
Loukas Souvlaki; and tuck into NT Foods’ moreish, fried
mud crab rolls and their crocodile
It’s not every day
you can breakfast
on Cambodian
chicken pancakes
LEFT/RIGHT:
Jimmy Shu at the
Rapid Creek Markets
counterparts. Owner Rod Duffy
sous-vides the croc to tenderise it.
“You might as well chew your bird
otherwise,” he drawls.
The villagey feel and quality
food vendors at the Parap Markets
is a Saturday morning tradition.
It’s not every day you can breakfast on Cambodian chicken
pancakes, wash it down with Naturally Yum’s excellent mango
smoothies, and finish off with Anong Thai Sweets’ dozens of
authentic treats: from pandan rice cakes to freshly prepared
banana fritters.
I also visit adjoining Parap Fine Foods, a retail gourmet shop
with a fully fledged deli and cheese area, quality wine selection
and rows of locally produced goods
like Beatrice Buffalo’s water buffalo
cheeses and Humpty Doo jerky
(beef, croc and buffalo).
The next day, I visit another
Indonesian eatery, Sumatra. The
vibe isn’t as fun as Sari Rasa, but
the food’s a notch higher. I try a
tender jackfruit curry, as well as
hardboiled eggs encircled with
chilli sauce and an excellent
soybean tempeh. My lunch
companions also bring over slices
of beautifully roasted pork and
duck and barbecued pork from
next-door Roast & Noodle, run by
a Hong Kong native.

GREEK EATS
Darwin has another strong cultural influence — Greek.
Minutes north of Darwin’s airport I find Sweet Tooth, where
pastry chef Charly Troumouliaris serves traditional treats,
such as chocolate-dipped baklava and syrup-laden kataifi.
A short drive to Alawa Village and there’s another Greek cake
shop, Dimitrios, with an impressive DIY baking section for
home cake-makers, Greek drygoods aplenty and takeaway
specialities like éclairs and cone-shaped milfei (mille-feuille).
Seeking Greece’s savoury side, I visit Yots, which owner Evan
Papadonakis tells me is the Greek word for “boat”. Then he
laughs: “It’s how Greeks would spell ‘yachts’!” The large eatery
spills out onto wooden decking overlooking Cullen Bay Marina’s
pleasure boats. The food equals the view, with grilled octopus, a
molten saganaki with chickpeas,
and the signature seared and baked
barramundi with lemon caper sauce.
Numerous Darwinian foodies
also steer me to ex-Yots chef
Manolis Papathomas, who now
runs Manoli’s Greek Taverna.
There are homestyle mezedes:
shared plates ranging from panfried
chicken livers with sweet
Mavrodaphne wine, to whole
sardines with rosemary.
LAKSA WARS
If there’s a signature dish of Darwin,
it’s laksa. I start at the well-loved
Rendezvous Café, situated inside
what was once the 1929-built Star
Picture Theatre. Here, Cantonese
siblings Jojo and Ming Chung
preserve the original recipe by
Malay founders. Jojo recommends
the “combination”: sweetly roasted
pork, chicken, squid, prawns, dried
tofu and veggies in rich soup along
with thick wheat noodles and a
chilli hit from housemade sambal.
Of equal fame is Mary’s Asian
Laksa, which draws considerable
queues at the Parap Markets.

eat beat
fINE DINING
If you’re after Darwin’s more
upmarket scene, Hanuman’s the
place. Its large indoor dining
area and outdoor courtyard are
atmospheric and exotic. The food focus is on authenticity and
freshness — Jimmy says he spent years recruiting the right
overseas chefs. It shows. The butter chicken is rusty-red and
smoky, a world apart from the standard Aussie creamy stodge.
Signature Thai oysters arrive covered by baby tagines, lightly
drizzled with a delicate lemongrass-ginger-chilli liquor. Fab.
And there are few better ways to sample local barramundi
than via the Sri Lankan meen moolie, encased in a coconutturmeric
sauce that’s embalmed with fresh curry.
Saffrron is another great dining option, and it’s no
coincidence; Indian chef Selvam Kandasamy is ex-Hanuman.
In his stylish, homey Parap restaurant, he does wonders with
a lightened, skilled version of North and South Indian food. It’s
some of the best Indian I’ve had anywhere in Australia, from
a cheek-misting Andhra chicken spiced with green chilli to a
silken dessert of housemade kulfi ice cream with rosewater
and saffron.
We Love
About
As Casey Stoner prepares to
ride in his last race at Phillip
Island later this month, we
reflect on what makes him
such a great guy
Words CormaC HanraHan
1He’s a country boy
Casey is a country kid who grew
up in the Australian towns of Kurri
Kurri in New South Wales and
Southport in Queensland where
as a young tacker he would tear
around the paddocks on a Yamaha Pee Wee
50, riding solo for the first time at age three.
2He rocked, even as a kid…
He won his first race at age four
when he was entered in the
under-nine division at the Mike
Hatcher Junior Motorcyle Club
on the Gold Coast. By age six, he
had won his first Australian title.
3…And blitzed the
competition
Between the ages of six and 14,
Casey won 41 Australian dirt and
long track titles and over 70 State
titles. At the Australian Long Track
Titles in 1997, 12-year-old Casey competed in
every possible category, won 32 out of 35 races,
and walked away with all five Australian titles
on offer — all in the one weekend.
4He was a teenage dirt-bag, baby
With nothing left to win on the dirt-track circuit in Australia,
Casey decided it was time to step up into the world of road
racing. However, the legal age for road racing in Australia was
set at 16. In a beautiful example of nurturing your kid’s talent,
the Stoner family pulled up stumps and headed to the UK
(where the legal age is 14) so Casey could continue to develop his skills and
pile on the achievements.
5But he didn’t have it easy
While Casey had tasted success
in Australia, fame and fortune
were still to come. The Stoner
family struggled financially,
living in a caravan, at times
without electricity and running water,
while on the road following the racing
circuit around the UK and Spain. And
while he met with much success during
those early years spent moving up through
the divisions, he also met the tarmac with
a regularity that earned him the moniker
‘Crash King’.
6Practice makes perfect
In 2006, at just 26 years old (but
still looking 16) Casey stepped into
the world of elite MotoGP and was
placed eighth. He won the first of
two world championship titles in
2007 (the other was in 2011).
7He’s tough as nails
Just a day after crashing
spectacularly during qualifying
— resulting in chipped bones
and torn ligaments in his right
ankle — Casey wore a modified
boot and managed a courageous fourth in
this year’s Indianapolis GP. He flew back
to Australia to have reconstructive surgery
in August, before preparing for the 2012
Skiers and
snowboarders
disagree on many things,
but there’s one thing they both
lust after — powder. Whether you’re
attached to one polycarbon plank or two, this fluffy,
light snow makes you feel like you have wings.
Hokkaido’s conditions are unparalleled for powder in
Asia. Fly Jetstar to Sapporo and you can experience
the best of it at these resorts:
accommodation: While there is no onmountain
about the mountain: If you don’t want
to venture out too far from Sapporo, or if
you only have a short stay (even just a day!),
the two best resorts are Sapporo Teine and
Sapporo Kokusai (see below). The 1972
Winter Olympics were held in Sapporo
Tiene, and it still has the flame-bowl to
prove it. Teine has 15 courses, the longest
being a whopping six kilometres long. Its
Highland area offers some of the steepest
terrain in Japan and there are good off-piste
and tree runs. From the summit, Teine has
incredible views of Sapporo downtown
and Ishikari Bay, which is beautifully lit
up at night. Kids are catered for well here
too, with a child-friendly jump with rails,
snowshoeing, sledding and tubing.
The retro Royal Hawaiian hotel is painted flamingo pink
Forget what the physicists
say, time travel is
possible. What’s more, it
takes only 10 hours and
a north-east tack from
Australia’s east coast
to do it. Like many international
destinations, Hawaii — and
particularly the Waikiki section
of Oahu — has developed a sense
of the generic in recent years.
Albeit with a lei around its neck.
But if you know where to look it is
possible to indulge in much of
the old-school cool that once
made Waikiki a byword for
tropical sophistication.
Stay @ the Royal hawaiian, waikiki, oahU
Constructed in a Spanish Mission style and painted
flamingo pink, this huge establishment has stood
its ground on the beachfront since 1927. It was the
inspiration for Joni Mitchell’s famous lines “a pink hotel,
a boutique and a swinging hot spot”. Yes, they might have
paved paradise, but they did a damn fine job of it as The
Royal Hawaiian spans five lush acres where immaculate
gardens and cool architecture mix like the ingredients
of a well-made Mai Tai (more on that later). But unlike
many modern hotels that embrace minimalism because
they’re too afraid to have a personality of their own, the
Pink Palace revels in its embrace of the OTT. Renovated in
2008 and again in 2010, this hotel was one of the first to
adopt the luxe-kitsch concept. Even if you can’t afford to
stay here, there are free walking tours of the resort every
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 2pm.
Cost: Rooms start at around US$620
of town sewn up, Ono is where
the locals head for the taste of
yesteryear. This family-run hole in
the wall, a couple of clicks east out
of Waikiki, pumps out traditional
fare like succulent kahlua pork,
Hawaii’s food scene was all about:
zero pretension, maximum flavour
with each new wave of Asian
migrants to the region. This is
Cocktails in
keehi lagoon, oahu
Yes, it’s more of a locals’ watering
hole. Yes, it’s kinda under the
flight path. And yes, the décor
has barely changed since 1957.
But a trip to Keehi Lagoon is as
steeped in authenticity as can
be. Beneath twinkling lights
strung from bamboo paneling,
you will be served concoctions
in ceramic vessels that resemble
wooden carvings of ancient and
angry gods. Most probably to the
accompaniment of a ukulele —
an instrument which the locals
have mastered like few others.
Glossing over the fact that the
Hawaii’s signature drink — the
Mai Tai — was actually invented
in California in 1944, it is still
the ideal libation to kick off your
evening. Combining white and
dark rum with a closely guarded
blend of fruit juices, it is a drink
for the ages. But be warned, it is
deceptively strong and works
from the ankles up. This venerable
tiki bar also acts as a repository
for many of Hawaii’s other
storied cocktails. For something
indisputably authentic, ask the
bartender for a Scorpion. Invented
at a small and deceased venue
called The Hut, this treat is not
on the menu but contains brandy,
triple sec, two types of rum and
enough orange juice to make you
Sudoku
Grab a pencil, put on your thinking cap and join the craze!
inStructionS
The objective of Sudoku is to fill in the
missing squares so that each row, column and
3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through to 9.
To get you started, here are a few tactics...
Scan each horizontal and vertical band
consisting of three 3x3 boxes. It’s often
easiest to start in a spot with the most
numbers already given. If you can find the
same number in two rows, you know that
number must be in the third (the same goes
1EASY
3 1
5
7 8
9 8 6
4 1 7
2 1 6
5 4 7
6 7 9 2
for columns). Now see which intersecting
rows and columns can be eliminated because
they also contain that number. (This method
is called slicing and dicing.)
Some Sudoku fans like to pencil in
possible answers in the corners of individual
squares. Once you have a few numbers filled
in, you may also find it handy to jot down a
list of missing numbers for each row, column
and box.
Jetstar NZ were thrilled to fly New Zealand’s Olympic
Team to their Welcome Home Tour celebrations.
Some of our lucky passengers also won the
opportunity to sit with the Olympic team from
Auckland to Christchurch, in an aircraft especially
decaled with the New Zealand Olympic logo.
Excited supporters waited at Christchurch in
anticipation as the team graciously posed for photos,
signed flags, shirts, and chatted with kids. These
aren’t just incredible athletes — they are amazing
individuals. Congratulations guys!
To celebrate the record haul of medals the Kiwi
team won at the London Games, Jetstar offered 120
fares at only NZ$12 for every medal the Kiwi team
took home, resulting in 1,560 fares offered across all
NZ domestic routes.
A Clean Start
Hygienic toilet facilities help villagers in northern Vietnam answer nature’s
call with good health, privacy and a clean environment
“My family has lived
here for over 25
years, but we only
just built a proper
toilet three months ago,” says
Hien, a farmer from the north of
Vietnam. “My wife and i spent
close to a week completing the
work. we should have made the
toilet long ago.”
Prior to constructing their new
toilet, a makeshift pit in the corner
of the yard was the only option for
Hien’s family when nature called.
A NEW Loo
Hien decided to build their new
toilet after he and other members
of his village participated in
a water and sanitation group
discussion facilitated by world
Vision with the support of StarKids.
“Our eyes were opened to the
detrimental effects that unhygienic
water and sanitation practices
have had on our health,” he says.
“i was one of the first to register to
construct a new toilet for my family.”
“Only four families had a
proper toilet when world Vision
first arrived in our village,” recalls
Cu, leader of Hien’s village.
“now, six months from the day
that the village participated in
water and sanitation discussions,
82 families have made themselves
a hygienic toilet. we continue to
encourage the remainder to make
their own toilet with support from
our village water and sanitation
team,” Cu explains.
Words Laura Hawting
“Only four families had a proper toilet
HELPING THE CAUsE
in addition to assisting community
members to construct hygienic
toilet facilities, the world Vision
water, sanitation and hygiene
project in Hien’s village also
strengthens water and sanitation
networks, training them to raise
awareness on the importance of
clean water and sanitation.
Calendars with picture messages
about water and sanitation have
been distributed to every family
as a daily reminder about good
hygiene practices that protect the
environment and water sources.
For hien’s 14-year-old daughter,
phuong, water and sanitation
improvements in her village have
made a world of difference.
“I felt really scared and
uncomfortable to use our previous
toilet, especially at night and on
rainy days,” recalls phuong. “Now
I can tell my friends that my family
has a hygienic toilet. through
the water and sanitation training
I’ve gained from my teachers and
shared with friends at school, I’ve
also learned how to practise good
personal hygiene and protect
the environment.”
