IT’S NOT JUST THAT
YOU CAN TRUST US
WITH THE NUMBERS,
YOU CAN TRUST US
NOT TO TURN YOU INTO
ONE TOO.
At Brewin Dolphin, we like to get
to know our clients. That’s why
every relationship begins with
you, your investment manager,
and a blank sheet of paper. We’re
independently owned, with no
in-house funds to ‘push’ or ‘sell’,
and our investment managers are
free to choose from the whole
investment market. So you can
rest assured your portfolio will
always reflect your own specific
circumstances and your own
unique wants and needs. But,
while we’re on the subject of
numbers, give us a call on the
one at the bottom of the page,
we can have a chat, and hopefully
you’ll find that the first thing we
earn is your trust.
Philip Meeson
I first visited Glasgow as a child. I have hazy memories of walking around the
Gorbals, where my grandfather grew up in the 1930s.
When I returned a few years ago, it felt like a different place. I loved the city
centre’s Victorian and Edwardian buildings, the cool cafés and hip boutiques of Byres
Road, the edgy clubs and bars of Sauchiehall Street, and the peace and beauty of
Kelvingrove Park. Jet2.com’s new base isn’t only a boon to the people of Scotland’s
largest city, it’s great news for those in Spain, Cyprus, Turkey, Portugal and France
who can now get great value flights to one of Europe’s most vibrant places.
As well as shedloads of advice on what to see and do in Glasgow, we’ve got
Monaco 007-style, hidden Venice, gourmet Croatia, versatile Reus, an interview with
Scotland’s own Andy Murray, and tons more besides. We’re also delighted to have
the lady of the moment, Emily Blunt, lighting up our cover. Happy flying!
What do Henry Kissinger, Nelson Mandela and
1. Hold the ball
with both hands
at your chest
1. With your feet
planted shoulder-
width apart, drop the
ball to let it bounce
at your side
2. Gently toss up the
ball while twisting it
hard in the direction
you prefer
from 24 April to 2 May. “We are there to have a good
time and to entertain you guys,” he enthuses. “You’ll
see high energy, lots of laughter, great basketball and
some good-looking men!” The sport remains under the
radar in the UK, but Lofton promises, “No matter how
bad a day you’re having, we’ll cheer you up.”
2. Step forward as you would
Always keep your eyes
Simply drop the ball to
quickly bring them together
to grip the ball and catch it
with your upper inner arms
Old balls work best
Future Perfect
Indulge your inner nerd at a cutting-edge arts festival
Nobody knows what the future has in
store, but Drew Hemment has a better
idea than most. He’s the director of
FutureEverything, the UK’s only festival
dedicated to innovation in the arts and
technology, which draws 50,000 visitors
to Manchester annually.
This year, alongside experimental
electronic music and new technology,
there will be an exhibition about how
our relationship with information is
changing as the internet and smart-phone
tracking technology such as Foursquare
and geotagging evolves. “We’ve got
a bunch of the world’s leading artists
onboard who are inspired by the digital
realm,” explains Hemment. “They’re
in the process of transforming it from
something from geeky and inaccessible
to something that is incredibly beautiful
and overpowering.”
Live music comes from all-girl rockers
Warpaint and New York hip-hop trio Das
Racist, and a third of the programme is
free, including many art shows and
debates. The future looks bright. RA
“You never know who you’re going to meet in
Cannes and where the best party will be. The person
Timing Is Everything
“To guarantee you end up dancing with the stars,
Beyond The Fringe
It started in an Edinburgh pub in the year
2000. Soaking up the atmosphere at the annual
Fringe Festival, Steve Gove had a brainwave:
why not start a similar event in Prague, the city
he’d moved to and fallen in love with a few
years earlier? He acted upon his impulses and
set up the Prague Fringe Festival, which this
year celebrates its tenth anniversary.
“Edinburgh and Prague have
a very similar atmosphere,”
says Gove. “They’ve both
got cobbled streets, lots of
churches and ancient history.
I think we’ve managed to
recreate the atmosphere of
the Edinburgh Fringe here.
You’re constantly running from
theatre to theatre, the shows
are all short, tickets are cheap,
and by the end of the week you’ve
been on an emotional rollercoaster –
you’re on your last legs, you’ve drunk
yourself into the ground, and had a
massive cultural injection.”
Let’s see which shows Steve urges
us not to miss...
she’s back to celebrate our tenth
Her quirky Aussie cabaret has left
audiences from the outback to the
“In this haunting but
ultimately life-affirming
play, a woman, widowed
following the sinking of
her husband’s rig off the
resilience in her own heart. It’s become a minor
STEVE AND EJ
stylesalvage.blogspot.com, Manchester
“Our blog is an open discussion about how men could (and
do) dress,” says EJ. “We aim to showcase emerging and
established talents that exude a penchant for quality and
tailoring.” The duo, who started blogging in 2007, predict
the workwear trend will continue to be big in Manchester.
“Manchester has a very distinct look,” says EJ. “The
1960s lives on in the hearts of many men here. The
women love showing off their legs and this will certainly
continue as the weather warms up.”
They suggest shoppers on a budget try the Northern
Quarter, with Afflecks (52 Church Street; afflecks.com)
still the best place to pick up clothes by local designers.
TAMU MCPHERSON
alltheprettybirds.blogspot.com, Milan
Tamu McPherson began blogging in 2008 to draw
attention to stylish people in her home town. “Fashion
allows us to express different sides of our personalities,”
she says. “I love dressing up and assuming different
personas with each new look.”
Apparently, this year the Milanese are loving vintage,
neon, stripes, florals and pleats – the “more is more”
approach. To join the club, she recommends trendy
boutique Frip (16 Corso di Porta Ticinese, frip.it).
Europe’s top fashion bloggers unmask
this summer’s usual suspects

XENIA ALONSO
barcelonette.blogspot.com, Barcelona
“I’m inspired by people and the places
I discover around my city,” says Xenia,
who’s been blogging for five years now. Her
city’s style, she says, is “urban and casual”,
and it’s full of young people who like to put
individual twists on the newest trends.
She thinks this summer will see an
explosion of bright colours, although her
advice for those with more conservative
tastes is that “white and grey will be the
new black”. She also predicts a strong
1970s revival, with maxi dresses and
wide-legged trousers proving popular.
To snap up luxury brands at bargain
basement prices, she recommends La
Roca Outlet Village (08430 Santa Agnès
de Malanyanes, larocavillage.com) on the
outskirts of the city.
DENNI
thechicmuse.blogspot.com, Paris
The creator of The Chic Muse set up her
blog a couple of years ago in an effort
to express her love for fashion and her
home city. “There is something so artistic
about fashion,” she says. “It’s a form
of expression allowing people to show
others their personality, I love the fact
that it is constantly evolving, it keeps
things exciting”.
When she spoke to JetAway, Denni was
about to head off to New York for Fashion
Week, and days later her blog was full of
ANDY TORRES
stylescrapbook.com, Amsterdam
After moving to Amsterdam three years ago and struggling
to find a job in the fashion industry, Andy Torres started
a blog to showcase her skills as a writer and a stylist.
“For me, fashion is a way of expressing myself,” she
says. “I always try to experiment with different styles
and I’ve done some designing as well.”
So far, Andy says, 2011 has brought lots of camel
coats and nude colours to the streets of the Dutch capital,
and she also expects this summer’s trends to feature lots
of bright colours: “Wide-leg pants are making a comeback,
so you can expect to see a lot of these about.”
For second-hand bargains, Andy recommends popping
into Episode (Waterlooplein, +31 20 320 3000), which is
full of one-of-a-kind gems.
two-tone boots, vintage sweaters, funky
accessories, and the obligatory shots of
her stepping out of yellow taxis. This girl
clearly likes to dress up and have fun.
Back in Paris, Denni predicts that
accessories will be big and bold this
summer, hats and earrings will be
everywhere, and that we should expect
to see lace making a comeback. She says
the best place to snap up some Parisian
vintage gems is Coiffeur Vintage (32 Rue
de Rosiers, +33 1 40 27 04 98), where
you can find designer cast-offs at walletfriendly
prices. AB
Nailing It
The (un)varnished truth about how to make your
next manicure a minor masterpiece
French manicure? A fresh coat of varnish in
fire-engine red? That’s so last season! Fans of the
talon salon are making the most of a new type of
nail art that’s right at their fingertips.
Katy Perry, Rihanna and Alexa Chung have been
using their nails as a canvas for cool designs on the
red carpet, on tour and at fashion weeks across the
globe. Alexa got the thumbs up from Grazia with her
retro Hawaiian palm trees at New York Fashion Week,
while Katy Perry has been posting photos online of her
red-and-white-striped, candy-inspired nails. She’s so
crazy for the trend that she’s signed up with OPI nail
varnishes to collaborate on a new line of shades,
launched recently.
Search for “Vainglorious” on YouTube and you’ll find
an instructional video from Lady Gaga’s manicurist on
how to recreate some of her looks. Both Gaga and
Rihanna are fans of Minx nail art, which is available
at salons across the UK or to try at home.
The science is simple – a solid film with a sticky
backing is laid on to the nail bed and heat activated
under a lamp (use a hairdryer on medium heat at
home), then cut to size if necessary. Check out Minx
My Nails (minxmynails.co.uk) for salons offering
Minx treatments across the UK. To do it yourself,
pick up some Models Own nail-art pens online
A P R I L / M A Y
(modelsownit.com) and use the long, thin brush
to add strokes and lines, then the nib for detail.
If you live in Newcastle, you’re in luck. Geordie
lasses are all over the trend. In fact, Digital Nail Art
(digitalnailart.com) in Newcastle is leading the way
by using digital prints of personalised designs that
can be applied to nails in minutes. You could emulate
Katy Perry, who had photos of her hubby Russell
Brand pasted to her claws in a kooky romantic gesture.
Or you could have pictures of your pooch on your
digits, if that’s not too weird. Alternatively, why not
take a photo of the fabric of your favourite dress and
have your nails done to match?
Tell the guys at Digital Nail Art that you saw the
YouTube video on their website and you’ll receive
a 20 per cent discount on your phone booking,
so a full set of digitalised nails will cost just £20.
And it’s not just the Brits who are getting into nail
art. If you’re off to Palma in Majorca this summer, you
can treat yourself to some souvenir nail art – far better
than cornrows or a henna tattoo! The girls at Marily
Arago (mallorca-beauty-nails.com) are masters of their
craft and can give you a taster on one nail before you
commit to all ten. LH
Lady Gaga-inspired Deborah Lippman nail lacquers
are available from our Skyshop, see p114.
Haute Cuisine
Dizzying taste sensations await in Paris’s new culinary hot spots
The French capital does dining out like
nowhere else, and you can’t swing a chat
without hitting a chic new eatery. JetAway
picks the crème de la crème of places for
you to stuff yourself silly in this spring…
1. Bigarrade
Fussy eaters be warned: you get what you’re
given at this menu-less restaurant, then you
have to guess what it is: veal carpaccio?
Herring roe? Pumpkin and foie gras
emulsion? All of these slide across the pass
at this ultra-fashionable but reasonably
priced bolthole in the 17th Arrondissement.
A meal can last for hours and run over several
courses, but you’ll never get bored – the
chefs work their magic from an open kitchen.
106 Rue Nollet, +33 1 42 26 01 02,
2. La Bauhinia
Asian-fusion eatery La Bauhinia takes its
cues from French colonial Indochina, serving
everything from Indonesian curry laksa to
veal with salsify gratin and preserved lemon
cream. The staff wear smart Vietnamese silk
jackets and the decor is wildly over the top.
The Shangri-La Hotel, which opened in
December 2010, has two more top-notch
treats on the way: a traditional French place,
L’Abeille, and a Chinese joint called Shang
Palace, both of which are coming soon.
3. Le 39V
A dedicated lift whisks Paris’s most
discerning and well-heeled diners up to the
top of an impressive building in the heart of
the so-called Golden Triangle. Location is
everything for posh Parisians, hence the
name of this restaurant getting straight to
the point by announcing, “Look! We’re in

a plush part of town.” Put on a tie (or high
heels) and enjoy the refinement on offer. The
menu is skewed towards northern French
cuisine such as Breton scallops and
langoustine, Normandy beef and fish.
4 Le Dauphin
International in both flavour and looks, Le
Dauphin was designed by Dutch architect
Rem Koolhaas and features cooking by
Basque chef Inaki Aizpitarte. The hottest
new table in town is next door to Aizpitarte’s
much-lauded Le Chateaubriand (voted
Restaurant Magazine’s 11th best eatery in
the world 2010). Le Dauphin is younger,
more fun, less pricey and designed for
a cooler, casual crowd. It serves “gastro-
Clockwise from left: the Parisian
skyline; Le 39’s elegant cuisine and
roof terrace; opulent Shangri-La
tapas”, so if you just want a bite to eat
before going out partying you can enjoy little
plates of perfection served on the hoof.
Avenue Parmentier, +33 1 55 28 78 88
5. Baxo
For something a little bit different, try this
bar-restaurant hybrid that wouldn’t look out t
of place in Leeds or Manchester. Gayfriendly
Baxo has opened on the banks of
the Canal Saint-Martin, offering light,
modern food with an Asian twist such as
seared tuna with wasabi. Later on, the
showy interior morphs into a noisier DJ bar ar
with cocktails and disco music until the
early hours, but tapas is served all night in
case you need nibbles between negronis. . CB
Leading The Pack
When it comes to strange crisp flavours,
the British are famously progressive. We think
nothing of snacking on fried potato snacks the
rest of the world would flinch from. Try going
to a supermarket in mainland Europe and
asking for pickled onion, haggis, tomato
ketchup or Cajun squirrel crisps. They’ll
suggest you seek help.
Bradford has been at the epicentre of the
forward-thinking crisp world since 1945,
when Charles Brook established the Seabrook
Crisp Company. Since then the Yorkshire
company famed for its distinctive crinkle cuts
has spearheaded Britain’s flavour revolution.
They’re responsible for long-lost legends such
as fish and chips, bacon and brown sauce,
and chip shop curry, and currently produce
the super-spicy mustard, wasabi and two
chilli. To celebrate Bradford’s unsurpassable
Asian restaurant scene, Seabrook recently
unveiled a tangy new desi curry flavour.
“We wanted to do something that felt
local,” says John Tague, Seabrook’s managing
director. “Desi curry refers to curry from the
Bradford area. It took a long time to develop
the flavour because everything has to be
perfect when it launches.”
The creation of a new crisp flavour, Tague
explains, is a slow process of trial and error.
“We have various companies who supply the
flavours and we work closely with them and
their technologists to develop the flavours,”
he says. “We keep returning to the flavours,
keep refining them and tweaking them – it
takes a long time.”
But even a crack team of crisp nerds can
get it catastrophically wrong. “Many years ago
we even brought out sweetcorn,” says Tague.
We’ll W stick with wasabi, thanks. ML
EMILY BLUNT
SEE
EMILY
PLAY
From the Edinburgh Fringe to the Hollywood Hills,
Emily Blunt’s journey to the top has been as unpredictable
as it’s been unstoppable, says Vari Innes
Depending on your age, tastes and
testosterone levels you’ll recognise
Emily Blunt as 1) a fabulously fiesty NY
fashionista (in breakthrough chick flick
The Devil Wears Prada), 2) the pretty damsel in distress
in a couple of Hollywood flops (The Wolfman,
Gulliver’s Travels), or 3) our longest-serving monarch
before she really let herself go (The Young Victoria).
That’s quite a range, although in 2011 this 28-yearold
English rose has attempted an even greater
stretch. In sci-fi romance The Adjustment Bureau,
Blunt plays a ballet dancer cheating destiny to
romance Matt Damon, while at the other end of the
spectrum, she plays an animated garden ornament
doing much the same thing for James McAvoy in
Gnomeo And Juliet. If you can’t guess where her
22JetAway
contrary career will take her next, don’t panic, she
hasn’t the faintest idea herself.
When asked if she believes in fate, a question, on
reflection, she may have heard often since the release
of The Adjustment Bureau, Blunt fails to live up to her
name. “It’s funny because I feel a bit mixed on this
subject,” she says. “I’ve had experiences where I feel
the choices I’ve made have been the deciding factor
as to which path I ended up on but I also feel like
I’ve had these magical occurrences that seem so
fatalistic, that they’re almost predetermined in some
way.” Thankfully her characters aren’t quite so comfy
sitting on the fence – even the star-crossed gnomes
– but it’s this combination of luck and judgment,
canniness and credulity that brought her to our
attention in the first place.

‘My father is a great
in court all the time’
Born in Roehampton, London, to an actress and
a high-profile barrister (“My father is a great actor
– he has to do it in court all the time,” she jokes)
Blunt’s first tussle with the fickle fingers of fate
happened as she applied for secondary school. “My
sister went to a really competitive school, and I
desperately wanted to get into it,” she recalls. “I was
so devastated at 16 that I didn’t go there. So, I went to
my second choice [Hurtwood House in Surrey], and
they had a great drama department.” Blunt soon
found herself at Edinburgh Festival earning some
summer pocket money and impressing her first
theatrical agent. “And I think back on that and how
sad I was not to get into that school, but, really, if I
had gone there, I would never be here today.”
Not bad for a girl whose crippling stammer once
forced her “to act with a Northern accent in school
plays” – something perhaps Colin Firth might have
tried in The King’s Speech. Though it would be
tempting to the say the rest is history, perhaps
“historical” is the more accurate term. After making
her TV debut in Boudica, about the British warrior
queen’s legendary rebellion against the Romans, she
went on to be cast as soon-to-be-headless Catherine
Howard alongside Ray Winstone’s Henry VIII. Despite
her penchant for bringing people from the past to
life, it was two modern roles that nudged Blunt
towards the mainstream. Having won an Evening
Standard Award for her performance in 2004’s My
Summer Of Love (filmed in Todmorden, West
Yorkshire), Blunt stole the show two years later as
The Devil Wears Prada’s Emily, a fashion mag wannabe
with a cut-glass accent and more issues than
WHSmiths. “She was a marvellous character,” recalls
Blunt. “[Co-star] Stanley Tucci and I had a bet about
which of us would overact the most. I won.”
Overacting or not, the roles kept coming thick,
fast and varied. In the next few years, Blunt showed
her range – and the perils of playing Hollywood role
2007 indie Dan In Real Life, our equally swinevisaged
ruler in 2009’s much-lauded The Young
Victoria, and the rather more glamorous love interests
of 2010’s Gulliver’s Travels and The Wolf Man.
Despite a fairytale wedding to John Krasinski
(from Prada and The Office US) last summer, Blunt’s
onscreen romances remain as wayward as her CV. In
The Adjustment Bureau she hooks up with her leading
man in a toilet (“The most unromantic setting
possible – that’s what I thought was cool!”) despite
protesting humorously “I loathe Matt Damon!” For
Gnomeo, meanwhile, she had to overcome an even
greater aversion. “I was one of these kids that seemed
to be scared of anything in costume, including
Father Christmas,” she explains. “So I didn’t really
understand the appeal of these strange little bearded
men in your garden. Then, when I read the script,
I thought it was the most charming, witty thing.
Basically we have revolutionised people’s
preconceptions of garden gnomes.” Is she still scared?
“I’m over it. It was therapeutic to do that movie.”
Blunt, as you may well have guessed, is rather
more down to earth than her regal onscreen image
suggests. “I like pizza. I like curry. I like burgers. I
like grilled cheese. I like Chinese food. I like anything
that’s bad for me,” she admits. But the thing she
seems to like most of all is defying her audience's
expectations, reinventing herself onscreen time
and time again. “It’s exciting going off on this very
precarious journey of being an actress,” she says. “It’s a
big leap of faith. But I thought, ‘Well, I’ll give it a go,’
and so far – touch wood – it’s working out.” So what
continues to drive her? “I love people,” she explains.
“I love hearing about their lives and I love their
idiosyncrasies and I think that is what it is. I hope to
God I never discover my whole bag of tricks cause
that’s the fun of it. You can keep going, keep being
curious and you don’t even know what you’re going
to be able to do.”
You certainly don’t. Next up for Blunt is Salmon
Fishing In The Yemen – a film based on the Paul Torday
bestseller, not the holiday – although with this rising
star, frankly, you can never quite tell.
OFF-MAP ITALY
28JetAway
Venice is one of the world’s most beautiful cities, so why do so few
tourists explore its islands? Eleanor Hannah investigates
t’s not as if the city of Venice could be
called a disappointment. It’s as beautiful
and mysterious as I’d expected it to be.
By day, I weave through flocks of tourists
to marvel at the dark green canals and ornate
buildings that gleam under the bright blue sky.
At night, grand Venetian woman sweep by in
fur coats as I wander through the alleyways of
this labyrinthine city. But there are 117 islands
nearby and the majority are almost completely
ignored by tourists. I decided to explore four of
the most easily accessible.
Burano
The less you know about Burano, the better.
It’s more fun if it’s a surprise, particularly after
the well-documented delights of Venice. I hop
off the vaporetto (the region’s municipal
ferries), walk a hundred metres or so, and am
then totally blown away by the gorgeous
architecture that greets me. The island’s streets
are lined with picturesque houses in green,
lilac, yellow, red, ochre, blue and orange, to
name just a few of the colours. Cute canals
wind their watery ways around them.

Chioggia; Sant’Erasmo fortress; the
Lido pontoon. Previous: Burano’s
multicoloured residences
Burano is beautiful, but clearly nobody’s been
spreading the word. I pop into a pasticceria for a
snack and wait as two locals chat animatedly. When
my turn to be served comes, I speak in Italian and
am answered in kind – they seem delighted by my
clumsy efforts to communicate. Burano is renowned
for its locally crafted lace, and the shops scattered
along its streets are certainly worth a visit if you’re a
fan. And the architecture is enchanting.
Sant’Erasmo
It’s 11am on a Monday morning when I clamber
out of another vaporetto and on to the island
of Sant’Erasmo, situated in the northeast of the
OFF-MAP ITALY
Venetian lagoon. A mere half-hour ago I was
enjoying coffee and pastries in central Venice,
now I face a completely deserted landscape.
I wander through field after field of low-lying
rows of artichokes, courgettes and asparagus,
spotting only one other soul: an old man on
a bike, wearing a washed-out Hawaiian shirt
flapping in the wind under his coat, boxes of
leafy vegetables stacked over the back wheel.
He nods at me, then returns to business.
To get to the island, I scurry past the crowds in
central Venice, past the Basilica di San Marco and
up the Rialto, and make for the northern edge of
the island. There I watch the water lapping against
stone walls until the vaporetto appears to take me
to the lagoon’s outer limits. We go past Murano,
an island close to Venice which houses a famous
glass-making factory. By the time Murano recedes
into the distance, I have left everyone else behind
and it’s just me and the driver left.
Deeply sedate, Sant’Erasmo makes me feel as
if I’m in the middle of the countryside, and if it
weren’t for the brisk winds coming off the nearby
wetlands and the distant shine of water, it would be
easy to forget that it was an island. Although it’s
stark and silent when I wander around, in the
summer Sant’Erasmo blooms; it’s Venice’s market
Jet2.com 31

OFF-MAP ITALY
garden, famed for its vegetables. There’s even an
artichoke festival in June to celebrate the harvest
of its carciofi violetto (purple artichokes).
Torcello
Across the lagoon from Burano is Torcello, a tiny
island that bears the honour of being the oldest
populated region in the Venetian lagoon. Despite
its impressive past as a political and economic
centre, there’s little on Torcello these days to keep
you for long, but its single piazza is well worth
a look. Slip into the Basilica di Santa Maria
Assunta, founded in 639AD, for a few moments
of quiet contemplation. If you’re single, take a seat
on the Chair of Attila. This inauspicious-looking
piece of stone is thought to be the throne Torcello’s
judges sat on during open-air assemblies in days of
yore. Local lore has it that if you do the same you’ll
be married within the year. I plonk myself down
and await the results.
Torcello has had more than its 15 minutes of
fame. Ernest Hemingway retreated here in 1948 to
write a novel, and John Ruskin said of the view
from the cathedral’s campanile (bell tower) that,
“We may command one of the most notable scenes
in this wide world of ours.” Unfortunately, the
campanile is closed for renovation when I visit,
so no such view was to be had. Torcello is even
more deserted than Burano; just me and a few
adventurers ploughing around the small piazza
and its unassuming environs.
Chioggia
I take a vaporetto to the Lido, which is best
known as an upmarket beach resort and for
holding Venice’s glitzy film festival (labiennale.org)
every summer. From here, I catch the number
11 bus, which passes through the Lido and on
to a ferry for a five-minute hop to the island
of Pellestrina. At the tip of Pellestrina, it’s back
on to another ferry for the final 20-minute
crossing to Chioggia, the second-largest settlement
32JetAway
Right: the Church of Santa
Fosca, Torcello. Below: the
island’s Basilica di Santa
Maria Assunta, founded 639AD
in the lagoon after Venice, and another entirely
different experience.
A stroll up the Corso del Popolo, Chioggia’s
main street, gives a good sense of its flavour. It’s
down-to-earth and cheerfully dilapidated but still
popular with tourists, with plenty of restaurants
catering to the boatloads of visitors who come to
enjoy its cheap, fresh seafood. I only manage to
escape the crowds when I venture into the
charming back streets.
In this regard, Chioggia is more reminiscent
of a charming Greek island than of Venice, and as
I take the ferry back into the city, watching the
sunset blaze over the water, I marvel that such
variety could exist among islands so close to each
other, and that so few visitors to Venice take the
time to discover them. Venice isn’t all-consuming,
and a trip around the lagoon will delight and
surprise you just as much as La Serenissima itself.
Stuart Calder and Nick London, Specialist
Knee Surgeons with The Yorkshire Knee
Clinic, advise on how to reduce the chances
of knee injury while skiing this year...
Knee injuries are the most common major
injury sustained by skiers. They account
for around a third of all ski injuries, with the
ligaments most commonly affected. The most
serious knee ligament injury is a rupture of
the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which
results in problems with twisting and high risk
of the knee wearing out early (osteoarthritis).
Before deciding to cancel your ski trip
in favour of something safer, however, it’s
important to defi ne the risk of injury – it
is extremely low! The chance of a skier
sustaining a serious injury is only three in
every 1,000 ski-days. On average, you would
have to ski for approximately 2,100 days to
sustain an ACL rupture. While a skiing knee
injury is often simple bad luck – with many
ACL injuries occurring on lower slopes where
a fall is not fast enough for skis to come off
– there are some simple things you can do to
reduce the chances of injury:
• Exercise before your trip for six to eight
weeks before departure. For many people,
their one week’s skiing is the most intense
exercise they will do all year so their
muscles are more susceptible to injury.
Beware of fatigue and don’t attempt that
last run if you’re feeling tired. Exercise
advice can be provided by chartered sports
physiotherapists in practice across the UK.
• Ensure all equipment is professionally fi tted
and well maintained, especially ski bindings.
• Moderate alcohol intake during the day.
Research has shown that excess alcohol
contributes to a higher percentage of
hospital admissions after lunch.
If you are unlucky enough to sustain a knee
injury, early specialist advice is critical to
make the best possible recovery. Many ski
resorts have experienced doctors to assess
and provide initial treatment, but beware
of being coerced into surgery. Immediate
surgical treatments are rarely necessary
following skiing injuries (with the exception
of fractures) and often a simple brace and
crutches will allow time for refl ection over
the different treatment options available
once you have consulted an expert.
MONTE-CARLO AND BUST
BOND ON ABUDGET
34JetAway

Monaco is no longer
just the preserve of
super-rich super-spies.
Tristan Rutherford
attempts to do a 007
for less than the price
of a DVD boxset
Title Sequence
Price: €1
My grand entrance to this playground for
international playboys is on the modest side to
say the least. In fact, as the 100 bus from Nice
airport cruises through the Riviera, past rows
of Russian-owned villas and dozens of private
banks, fitting in with the millionaire crowd here
already seems like mission impossible.
I alight at Casino Square, perhaps the most
expensive piazza in Europe. With €10m of
vehicles parked outside the Casino de Monte-
Carlo, it looks like Donald Trump’s driveway.
Undaunted, I head across the road to the Hotel
de Paris (en.hoteldeparismontecarlo.com),
perhaps the most luxurious spot in Europe
to bed a Bond girl. Although with only €60 in
my pocket, my ambitions are somewhat lower.
APRIL / MAY
The World Is Not Enough
Price: €10
Le Bar Américain at the Hotel de Paris is vintage
007. It has a wooden counter, a mirrored spirits
shelf, and black-and-white prints immortalising
Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in To Catch A Thief
on the walls. The couple sipping their drinks
on upholstered club chairs next to me claim
to be holidaymakers from St Petersburg. But
what if they’re secretly SMERSH agents?
I give nothing away.
Buoyed by an (early) €10 martini (easy on the
vodka, if not the budget), I speak to reception
about pricing. My jaw drops when I learn that it
costs around €2,750 per person to stand in the
Garnier Suite during the Monaco Grand Prix
(May 28-29, if your pockets are considerably
deeper than mine). Time to leave.
A View To A Kill
Price: €6
My spirits rise as I sweep out of the Hotel de Paris to
a chorus of “au revoir monsieur” from the top-hatted
door staff. The sunny terrace of the Café de Paris lies
across the street. Boris Becker has been known to sip
€5 espressos here, and racing driver Fernando Alonso
can sometimes be seen cycling past. Behind the café is
the Sun Casino (montecarlosuncasino.com), which has
new €1 slot machines and a beginners’ roulette wheel.
I expect Bond has bigger fish to fry.
I strut past the designer shops on the Avenue des
Spéluges down to the gorgeous waterfront. These
streets form part of the Grand Prix circuit – there are
even tyre tracks burned into the curve outside the
Fairmont Hotel (fairmont.com). A five-minute walk
down Avenue Princesse Grace is Villa Sauber (nmnm.
mc), a new, budget-friendly addition to Monaco’s
burgeoning arts scene. Downstairs is a photography
exhibition, upstairs is a collection of dazzling costumes
from the Opéra de Monte-Carlo.
Licence To Grill
Price: €11 plus tip
Even secret agents need feeding occasionally so I nip
across the road to the Grimaldi Forum (grimaldi
forum.com), a great glass edifice housing Café Llorca,
which was opened by celebrity chef Alain Llorca in
December. With its funky decor and seascape vistas,
I expect a lunchtime refuel to cost more than petrol
for an Aston Martin, but instead the dishes hover
around the €10 mark. I watch my red mullet salad
get tossed in the open kitchen, then happily dig in.
Outside, A-list footballers such as Maradona and
Ronaldinho have left their star-studded bootprints
along the Champions Promenade. Further on, there’s
a Japanese botanical garden – not very Bond but
something of a blessing for a day-tripping family.
Burrowing under the Fairmont Hotel is Monaco’s
36JetAway
infamous tunnel, the fastest sector of the Grand Prix
circuit, and a great shortcut through to the harbour.
From Russia With Love
Price: €1
Over a hundred of the world’s poshest boats call
Monaco home, and the harbour is a real if-you’vegot-it-flaunt-it
zone. Recalling the helicopter scene
in Goldeneye, most of these super-yachts have room for
a chopper on top, if not two. Roman Abramovich’s
shockingly named Ecstasea is a regular, as is Sheikh
al-Thani of Qatar’s boat Katara. I hop aboard the new
BateauBus, a stylish, solar-powered ferry that crosses
the harbour. Tip: unless you’re planning on doing this
journey over 100 million times, it’s cheaper than
doing it in your own super-yacht.
Goldfinger Food
Price: €9.50 plus tip
The ribbon of bars and restaurants surrounding
Monaco’s harbour are as classy as they are inviting,
even to a fake spy now down to his last €31.
Surprisingly, great value abounds. Seafood palace
La Rascasse (larascasse.mc) has beers for €3 and
free canapes. Hip hangout Zest (zestmonaco.mc),
meanwhile, boasts an aperitif special for €9.50: a glass
of wine with a platter of oysters and mussels. Suitably
fortified, I climb back up to Casino Square for my
final assignment: the most extravagant casino this side
of Vegas, and a must-visit for Bond fanatics.
Casino Royale
Price: €15
I feel underdressed in the Casino de Monte-Carlo
(montecarlocasinos.com), which may be because
this is a ludicrously flashy building covered in frescoes
of Italianate scenes of unadulterated pleasure, or
because I’ve only got a €10 note and a handful of
change left in my pockets. I purchase three €5 chips,
but after a few hopeless spins of the roulette wheel it’s
game over for this bluffing Bond. My dreams of guns,
girls and gadgets are no more. But for the high life on
a budget, I discovered Monaco can't be beaten.
“Glasgow has a bit of a swagger, but it’s a friendly
place. Whether you’re looking for an edgy arts venue,
a cool kids’ hang-out or a really intimate dinner, it’ll
come up trumps. As a comedian, I often work nights,
so I enjoy the afternoon delights Glasgow has to
offer. You can’t beat a Sunday afternoon at the
karaoke in The Horse Shoe Bar (17 Drury Street,
0141 248 6368, horseshoebar.co.uk). On a good day
it’s like New Orleans during the Mardi Gras.
“For something more sedate try Maggie May’s
(60 The Trongate, 0141 548 1350, maggiemays.info)
on a Saturday afternoon for great live music. Look
out for The Meatmen for some real rockabilly
flavour. Nearby Café Source (0141 548 6020, St
Andrew’s Square) is good for tasty Scottish food.
“I have a big soft spot for the Citizens Theatre
(119 Gorbals Street, 0141 429 0022, citz.co.uk) – it’s
a great place to see interesting performances then
catch up with folk in the bar afterwards. The Arches
(253 Argyle Street, 0141 565 1000, the arches.co.uk)
is an amazingly progressive arts space and I’d
encourage anyone to go and spend money there.”
“Glasgow is very proud of its people and its offerings.
Each corner of the city has something: the West End
is bohemian, the city centre is trendy, and the
Merchant City just continues to change, getting
bigger and better all the time. Favourite spots for
me include Ashton Lane in the West End, which has
Jinty McGinty’s (23 Ashton Lane, 0141 339 0747,
good one. I’ve been going for years and it’s still got
“Chefs tend to work long hours, and we don’t
The gateway to Catalonia has something
for everyone, says Chris Beanland
CATALONIA UNCOVERED
Reus For Wine Lovers
For reds worth travelling for, you can’t beat
the valleys of Priorat
Half an hour’s drive from Reus, you reach the small
yet perfectly formed region of Priorat, home to the
exquisite wines of the same name. Verdant valleys and
rolling hills spike your interest from the road, but the
real draw here is the grapes themselves – and what
they’re turned into.
Priorat’s production levels are minuscule compared
to the heavy hitters of Spanish vino tinto such as Rioja,
yet the results are every bit as good. The soil here,
unusually, is formed of ancient quartz rocks and slate,
giving a distinctive gutsy taste to the wines, which are
mostly made from grenache grapes.
Both historic wineries such as Bujorn (+34 656
355 663, bujorn.cat) and more recent additions
such as Bodegas Mas Alta (+34 977 054 151,
bodegasmasalta.com), set up in 1999, are happy
to show you round and share some of their tipples.
Afterwards, why not stay the night in the Catacurian
boutique hotel (+34 977 825 341, catacurian.com),
where you can enjoy more wine tastings plus
courses in Catalan cookery.
Reus For Foodies
Lively markets and swish restaurants are
a great temptation for gastronomes
From sticky, sweet churros and crema Catalana to
squid-ink paella and salt cod, Catalans are nuts about
eating – in fact, the International Nut and Dried Fruit
Foundation is headquartered here. At the impressive
food market, next to the Hospital Sant Joan, olives,
figs and sultanas are all laid out as if for an emperor’s
banquet. An open-air food market is also held every
Monday in the handsome Plaça Del Mercadel.
Lunch is the main meal in Catalonia, and GaudíR
(+34 977 127 702, gaudirestaurant.com), on the top
floor of the Gaudí Centre, is an ideal place for it. The
£35 five-course lunch includes tapas, fish and apple
tart for dessert. It’s served in a modern room flecked
with red and white – just, you suspect, as Gaudí would
have wanted it. The historic, sober Glorieta Del Castel
(+34 977 340 826, restaurantlaglorietadelcastell.com),
is a former wine cellar priding itself on its large range
of Priorat wines. It’s perfect for a posh, boozy dinner
after a day’s sightseeing.
Reus For Sun Seekers
Bustling Salou and serene Cambrils will get
you tanned in no time at all
With nine beaches, Salou is a sun worshipper’s
paradise. It’s also that most uncommon of things:
a mass-market resort that hasn’t lost its lustre. Salou
grew wildly in the 1970s, but has kept its Catalan
flavour while offering value-for-money fun to visitors.
The long, sheltered beaches attract families, and after
dark there are plenty of bars to round off a day spent
lounging on the sand. The beachside promenade is one
of Salou’s nicest places for a stroll or an ice cream
under the swaying palm trees. Golf is big here too:
there’s three pitch-and-putt courses, mini-golf and four
18-hole courses on the fringes of town.
Just west of Salou, Cambrils is an altogether slower
proposition, with historic buildings and ageing boats
lending a cute, faded grandeur. Down at the harbour
you can watch the catch come in, heading for
renowned eateries such as the Michelin-starred Can
Bosch (+73 977 360 019, canbosch.com). Just 100m
from the port, it serves local sole and scampi, sea snails,
Mahón cockles and Galician oysters as part of its
five- or eight-course tasting menus.
For History Buffs
A charming patchwork of classic architecture
and Catalan modernism
Reus’ most famous son, Antoni Gaudí, was born here
in 1852. A great believer in Catalan independence and
culture, Gaudí moved to Barcelona and went on to
become one of the world’s most famous architects.
Sadly he never built anything in the town, but you can
explore his legacy at the fascinating Gaudí Centre
(+34 977 010 670, gaudicentre.cat). It’s a multimedia
museum stuffed with archives, videos and artworks –
plenty to slake the thirst of Gaudí devotees.
Reus also boasts modernist buildings designed by
Gaudí’s contemporaries. Especially worth looking at
are Lluís Domènech i Montaner’s imaginative houses
Casa Navàs and Casa Rull, both of which look like
they’ve escaped from a fairy tale.
Republican Reus endured severe bombing in
the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, but its oldest
building, the handsome, stone Sant Pere Church, still
survives. Walk up to the font and you’ll be standing
right where Gaudí himself was baptised.
Reus For Kids
Kids will go loop-the-loop for the
PortAventura theme park
You can spot the peak of Dragon Khan, the famously
terrifying rollercoaster at PortAventura (portaventura.
com), from the tarmac at Reus Airport. If seeing the
45m-high track doesn’t put you off, perhaps knowing
its top speed will (a dizzying 65mph). This whiteknuckle
ride has coaster enthusiasts from all over the
world making pilgrimages here, and it’s easy to see why
– Khan has eight upside-down turns, enough to get
your veins pumping with adrenaline and your head
thrumming. If your kids are tall enough and have
a head for heights, they’ll go crazy for it.
To settle down, take a calming stroll through some
of the park’s other themed areas. There’s a replica Wild
West town, a Polynesian beach, and a Sesame Street
zone ideal for younger kids. When you’re recovered, it’s
time to get all shaken up again. Furious Baco is one of
the world’s fastest rollercoasters, reaching a phenomenal
83.9mph, while the Hurakan Condor is a seat that
drops a sweaty-palmed 86m to the floor. Yikes!
ANDY MURRAY
PHOTO GETTY
After the misery of Melbourne, Andy Murray heads to Paris hoping
for some grand slam glory at last. Neil Squires crosses his fingers
If Tim Henman’s tennis career was a case
of close but no cigar, Andy Murray’s is
threatening to become a case of cigar but
no lighter. While Henman hit a wall when
it came to the semi-finals of the sport’s defining
events, his successor as the great hope of the British
game has reached three grand slam finals – and
failed to win a set in any of them.
The uncomfortable truth for Murray is that
January’s Australian Open may end up having been
his best chance to break his grand slam duck. In
recent years few players have been handed the
chance to win one without having to defeat Rafa
Nadal or Roger Federer along the way. That made
Murray’s demise against Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in
the final all the more disappointing.
While he could have put his first final defeat,
in the 2008 US Open against Federer, down to
inexperience, and the teary Australian Open loss
last year to the same opponent down to the Swiss
player’s undeniable genius, there were no such
excuses this time. As Djokovic’s long-term practice
APRIL / MAY
THE AGONY AND
THE ECSTASY
partner, he knew his opponent’s game inside out
but still ended up shrinking to the occasion.
Next up in the grand parade of grand slams is the
French Open. How Murray responds in Paris will
be a valuable pointer towards whether he really is
the man to end Britain’s 75-year wait for a men’s
winner, since Fred Perry last obliged in 1936.
“It’s not an easy thing to get to a grand slam
final. It is very, very difficult to win one. I know
that,” says Murray. “Anyone who has played in
three finals would have loved to have won one but
I haven’t. I just need to keep working hard and try
and do it. Australia was a good start to the year.
I would have liked to have gone one win further
but I’m looking forward to the year ahead.”
The best thing Murray has going for him as he
prepares to compete at Roland Garros is that the
expectations are relatively low. At the tournament,
held in Paris’s chic 16th arrondissement and often
resembling a fashion show as much as an elite
sporting event, Murray has never proceeded beyond
the quarter-finals, which he reached in 2009. Nadal,
Jet2.com 55

ANDY MURRAY
‘I want to try and win one,
of course, but if it doesn’t
happen, it doesn’t happen’
ANDY MURRAY
who has won five French Opens, is expected to ease
past the opposition on his favoured clay surface.
The slow clay, it is widely believed, negates
the impact of Murray’s serve and reduces the
frequency of his return winners. Yet ask him to
rank it against the Wimbledon grass or the US
Open and Australian Open hard courts, and he has
a surprising answer. “It’s my favourite surface to
play on, even though my results haven’t been as
good,” he claims. “It’s very different to me than at
the other slams where I’m a lot more sure of myself
just because I know how to move well and how to
play properly on those courts. But I feel like I can
play very well on clay.
“It is more of a challenge because I hardly played
on a clay court until I was 15, so it’s not something
that comes naturally. I obviously have to work hard
on my game and put hours in on the practice court
but I love the tournament. It’s probably the hardest
to win physically because there are lots of long
rallies, long points and long matches.”
Exhaustion should not be a problem. The stamina
concerns of Murray’s youth, when cramp was
often an unwanted companion, have been resolved
through punishing off-season schedules drawn up by
his fitness advisor, Jez Green. He can last the Paris
pace. He has all the shots too. His forehand swing is
almost as good as his backhand these days, and the
passive tactical approach for which he is sometimes
criticised should work in his favour on clay.
Where the doubts remain are over his mental
muscle. At critical times in crucial matches
Murray continues to walk the tightrope of moody
meltdown. At 24 he often still resembles a grumpy
teenager. Last year’s fourth round exit at Roland
56JetAway
Garros against Tomas Berdych was accompanied by
typical petulance. “It’s so easy to see the balls,” he
moaned sarcastically as they turned brown in the
unseasonal damp. “How can I play if I can’t stand
up on this court?”
Murray matches should come with their own
personal bleeper. In Melbourne this year, the
swearing came thick and fast, a soundtrack which
hardly reflected a man at ease with himself and his
surroundings.
There have been other players with anger issues
who have gone on to win grand slams – John
Spaniard David Ferrer in the semifinal
of the Australian Open 2011
McEnroe being an excellent example – but when
fine margins stand between success and failure, it
might be necessary for Murray to channel his
energies more positively. “When you’re on the court
you do go into a bit of a bubble,” explains Murray.
“In the heat of the moment when things haven’t
gone as you would like you can say things you don’t
necessarily mean.”
What the pantomime does show, however, is that
Murray cares. Though he’s already set up for life,
with career earnings heading towards the £10m
mark, money has never been what has driven him.
The goal remains to emulate what Fred Perry did
all those years ago. “I don’t lose sleep over it at
night,” he says. “I want to try and win one, of
course, but if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.”
The feigned indifference seems to be a defence
mechanism to mask the pain of all the near-misses.
There are precedents he can draw upon as he
steels himself for another shot. Andre Agassi lost
his first three grand slam finals before winning
Wimbledon in 1992. He went on to win a full
house of slam titles. Ivan Lendl lost his first four
finals before beating McEnroe in the 1984 French
Open, the precursor to his eight slams. Agassi,
however, was 22 when he won Wimbledon and
Lendl was 24 when he took the French. The
warning from history is that time is already
running out for Murray to turn the tide.
Uncorked
On a food and wine tour of the Peljesac peninsula,
Rob Orchard overcame some (viti)cultural differences
The Finn and the Scot are chatting, rather
earnestly, about tannins.
“I thought there was nice attenuation
in the ’08,” says the Finn.
“Yes,” says the Scot, “but it’s certainly no Château
Latour!” They both laugh uproariously, much to my
undisguised bewilderment.
I could not be more out of my depth. A wine
dunce myself, I have joined a gourmet trip filled with
hardcore oenophiles. These are people who can say
things like, “I’m getting crystallised pineapple on my
back palate…” with a straight face, and who think
that malolactic fermentation is a suitable topic of
after-dinner conversation. For all my attempts to
guide the banter towards more traditional fields,
it keeps returning to winemaking minutiae – all
“residual sugars” this and “micro-oxygenation” that.
Still, the wine in Croatia is very nice indeed.
We’ve been travelling round the south of the
country for three days now, working our way north
from Dubrovnik, along the Peljesac (pronounced
“Pellyshatz”) peninsula, and over to the island of
Korcula, and I’ve drunk some truly stonking bottles
along the way. There are three major grapes in this
60JetAway
part of the world: plavac mali, an indigenous red, and
white varieties malvazija and posip.
What makes drinking them all the more pleasurable
is the winemakers themselves. I’ve never come across
such a passionate, welcoming bunch in my life. And,
unlike my travelling companions, none of them ever
asks me to identify my favourite sort of trellis or
explain my thoughts about noble rot. Bonus.
First up was Bee Gee lookalike and wine
(50km northwest of Dubrovnik) off the
former Yugoslavian state-owned winemakers
in 1992, straight after Croatia gained its
independence, and threw himself into
creating delicious, big-bodied plavac malis,
including the internationally renowned
Stagnum range. He and his son entertained
us in his tasting den built into a rocky
hillside, and plied us with delicious
cheeses and fresh-baked bread served
with some gloriously grassy olive oils.
Then there was Luka, the winemaker
at Krajancic Luka (+385 98 427 873). His
base on the island of Korcula is a rustic
cabin on the edge of a secluded bay – we
sat in the sun working our way through his
platoon of wines and nibbling figs, our
peace only interrupted when he started
leaping up at random intervals to recite his
own poetry with great dramatic flair.
62JetAway
Nearby, over at Frano Milina Bire
(+385 98 344 712, free-du.t-com.hr/
the goat risotto that was originally created
by the current owner’s grandfather to
celebrate the first visit of Marshall Tito.
At Ivo Skaramuca’s place in Dingac
(+385 98 243 153, dingac-skaramuca.hr)
on the mainland, we sat and drank at the
top of a vertiginous hillside – the vines
here are planted on 60-degree slopes and
drop directly down into the sea. In order
to harvest the grapes, pickers have to tie
themselves on to posts and abseil down the
hillside. It’s the sort of terrain better suited
to ninja goats than winemakers but it offers
cracking views for afternoon tipplers.
But it’s not just the wines and their
creators that inspire on Croatia’s south
coast. There are some gorgeous things to
see too. Dubrovnik is a wonderful walled
medieval city, where lanes filled with cafes
spider off the wide, central boulevards. After
a tour round the walls and a visit to the
pretty Church of St Blaise, we settled in
for the night on the waterfront terrace of
Nautika (+385 20 44 12 29, esculap-teo.hr),
one of the city’s best restaurants. The views
over the sea and the city walls are exquisite,

Croatia’s terrain is better suited
of the delicious seafood plates filled with chubby
Further along the coast – past blossom-bedecked
hamlets and the village of Trsteno which, I’m told,
has a 1,000-year-old plantain tree – is Ston, which
marks the start of the Peljesac peninsula. It’s home to
Europe’s second longest stone wall, built to protect
its supplies of sea salt. It also proves to be a fine spot
to sit under the shade of cypress trees and indulge
in a little late-morning grappa followed by a dozen
oysters – Ston is one of the few remaining spots
on the continent that still produces them, and they
are both cheap and delicious.
At the far end of Peljesac you can take a short ferry
journey over to Korcula, a beautiful island with an
ancient capital set on a little harbour ringed with
palm trees. We stayed at the quirky Lesic Dimitri
Palace (+385 20 715 560, lesic-dimitri.com), whose
manager, Tony, is a former opera singer known to
break into song over post-dinner drinks, much
to the delight of his guests. This giant of a man
gave us a tour of the city, which predates Dubrovnik
and has been variously occupied over the years by,
well, everyone – Venetians, Austrians, French, Russians,
Montenegrins and Brits, sometimes multiple times.
It is also prone to invasion from the two powerful
winds which cross Croatia – the Bora and the Yugo
– and so its streets are staggered to provide shelter.
It has a beautiful cathedral with a Tintoretto behind
the altar, a sign outside saying “we beg for silent
behaving”, and a gargoyle of an elephant created
through second-hand reports by a mason who’d
never seen an elephant. It looks like a badger.
As well as being a bass vocalist and crack tourist
guide, Tony is an entertaining dinner companion.
He took us to the Mate Tavern (+385 20 717 109)
in Pupnat, a heavy-timbered old house with just
one main room, an open fire, 1920s jazz playing,
and a formidable mamma of a chef who cooks
while watching game shows on TV. The dinner
was tremendous. We started with aubergine pâté,
grilled aubergine and goat’s cheese, and followed
with a masterly asparagus and smoked ham frittata.
After a light pasta with almonds and dried tomatoes,
and a delicate ravioli with goat’s cheese and grilled
sage, we segued straight into grilled Pag lamb.
This stuff is revered in Croatia, and with good
reason. The island of Pag is covered in herbs and
lashed by the salty water of the Adriatic. The lamb
feeds on the salty herbs and is effectively premarinated
by the time it gets to the butchers. We ate
the meat barbecued over old olive trees and vines,
then served with lettuce and a drizzle of olive oil.
Our trip drew to an end back in Korcula Town,
and the last night saw us entertained by local Klapa
singers at the hotel. Buoyed up with the confidence
of far too much rakija (the local spirit, variously
marinated with cherries, lemon slices, kumquats
and anything else that can be stuffed into a bottle),
I decided to try to blend in with the vineheads.
The Finn approached and poured me a slug of
posip. I gave it the old sniff and swill.
“I’m getting cheese on the nose,” I told him.
He looked at me askance.
“And, er, almonds on the tongue?” I ventured.
“Ketchup on the throat?”
La Tomatina
The world’s biggest food fight takes place in a small
village in Spain every August. It may only last an
hour but the bizarre spectacle of a fiercely fought
tomato tussle attracts visitors from across the world.
Well established (and consequently very well
attended), it’s also well worth a visit.
The “fight” has taken place each year in Buñol,
a village in southeast Spain near Valencia, since
the 1940s. The debauchery is all over by noon so
make sure to plan your travel and accommodation
arrangements well in advance so you don’t miss
a minute of the messy action. We suggest travelling
to Valencia a day or two before the splatter-fest
begins, then going to the village on the morning
of the main event. Remember to pack old clothes!
Frederic Chopin lived on Majorca during the winter of 1838-1839 with his
To commemorate his stay on the island, the local composer Joan Maria Thomàs
Cyprus Wine Festival
The residents of Cyprus know a thing or two about
winemaking, having produced the stuff for some
4,000 years. According to legend, Cyprus was the
main place to worship Aphrodite, the goddess of
fertility and love, and Dionysus, the god of wine, so
it’s only fair that the Cyprus Wine Festival celebrates
both deities. The event has been a favourite among
islanders and tourists since its inaugural year in 1961,
with visitors to the Lemesos Municipal Gardens
sampling wines such as muscat, retsina, and a dessert
wine called ommanderia. Scrub up beforehand –
An Olympic-standard
choose from.”
78JetAway
For fun in the Spanish sun, should Where should I buy?
There are numerous resorts offering pristine properties
you pick expat enclave Costa Blanca in gorgeous surroundings. Calpe to the north is beautiful
or more traditional Costa Calida?Here
– the Montesol resort in Maryvilla is a tranquil area
Why Alicante?
Located in popular Costa Blanca, Alicante has a lot to
offer the expat. The lifestyle is relaxed, the climate warm
(with more than 360 days of sunshine a year), and the
city is peppered with palm-lined boulevards, while the
miles of sandy beaches are lapped by the clear waters
of the Mediterranean. In Alicante itself there’s a wealth
of historic buildings, including the cathedral and the
castle, and there’s a beautiful harbour. The surrounding
area is dotted with pretty towns including Denia, with its
fantastic seafood restaurants.
What is there to do?
Ignacio Osle, sales and marketing director of Taylor Wimpey
de España (08000 121 020, taylorwimpeyspain.com), has
some expert recommendations: “Visitors should spend
the day at one of Alicante’s pristine beaches and then
sample some paella, the Spanish national dish, for
dinner, followed by a night at the theatre. If you want
a little more action check out the Terra Mitica theme park
(terramiticapark.com), or take a day trip over to one of the
glorious Balearic islands or up to historic Elche.”
with panoramic sea views. Closer to town, the Brisas de
Alenda resort is surrounded by the Sierra de las Aguilas
mountains and includes access to the Alenda Golf Resort.
How expensive are properties?
There is still demand for houses in Alicante, where
the average price for a resale, two-bedroom property is
£165,000. Osle explains: “We are finding that people
can get more for their money in this area compared to
Marbella, for example, so our buyers are keen on threebedroom
properties, such as townhouses.”
Is Alicante a good investment?
It’s key you choose a well-built property, explains Osle:
“So long as buyers are very strict on their criteria and
research well, good investments are there for the taking.
Houses in the Costa Blanca are more affordable than ever.
But prices won’t stay low for long.”
Why Murcia?
Where should I buy?
WHY TO BUY
Chris Mercer, director of
Murcia-based estate agent
Mercers:
“Murcia is one of the best
areas to invest in Spain in
2011. Paramount Pictures
has announced it will be
the new location for a
leisure park which will rival
Disneyland Paris, it’s a
reliably warm and dry part
of southern Spain, it has
not been overdeveloped,
it offers bargain property
prices, and it enjoys easy
access on low-cost flights.”
The Costa Calida is a reliably warm and dry part of
southern Spain, and with more than 3,000 hours of sun
a year, sun worshippers will find plenty to smile about
over here. According to the World Health Organization,
the region offers one of the healthiest lifestyles in the
world. What’s particularly refreshing about Murcia is that
it hasn’t been overdeveloped – there are strict planning
laws aimed at protecting and preserving the surrounding
countryside. It is one of the only unspoilt coastlines
remaining in Spain, there are plenty of rock-bottom prices
to take advantage of, and the area is easily accessible
thanks to low-cost flights from Jet2.com. Murcia
international airport is just over an hour to the north,
while Corvera is even closer, and due for completion in
summer 2011.
What is there to do?
The lifestyle here is typically Mediterranean, and the people
are laidback and easy-going. Close at hand is the beautiful
Sierra Espuña National Park (sierraespuna.com), and for
sightseeing it’s hard to beat Cartagena, a baroque Roman
city. Murcia itself is packed with shopping options, and
there are lots of watersports, golf courses, museums
and restaurants to enjoy. As for the local cuisine, the
emphasis is on hearty, traditional fare served with
excellent local wine.
Mazarron, on the coast of the Costa Calida area, is very
popular with buyers, and in Murcia city itself you can
find townhouses to renovate and a number of modern
apartments. There’s also a variety of new developments
offering numerous on-site facilities
How expensive are properties?
Chris Mercer, director of Murcia-based Mercers (+34 968
199 188), says: “Although our property prices start from
around £40,000 for two bedrooms, our average sale price
is £105,000, and for this you can get a two- to threebedroom
detached villa with a private swimming pool.
All this can be found on an 18-hole golf course, in an
established community, with great on-site facilities, all
within 15 minutes of Blue Flag beaches.”
Is Murcia a good investment?
Paramount Pictures has announced that Murcia will be
the site of a new entertainment park. “Located about five
miles from Camposol, it will bring much-needed work,
wealth and prosperity to the region,” says Mercer.
BUSINESS HIGH FLYERS
Adele Lock, founder of The Gentry Grooming
Co, has achieved an awful lot since setting up
her business in 2005. But first there’s something
we need to get out of the way.
“It was a life-changing experience,” Lock
says of her stint on the first series of BBC’s The
Apprentice. “Firstly, it made me realise what’s most
important to me: my family. But it also gave me
clarity of thought. Meeting lots of strong-minded
– and sometimes wacky – people made me realise
I want to make something of my life.”
“There was lots of adversity in my life at the
time,” she continues, “and looking back I don’t
know how I got through it.” Her husband was
appalled that she was going on a reality TV show
(“I thought it was a business documentary,” she
recalls), and her grandmother and sister-in-law
fell seriously ill during this period. She quit in the
fourth week of filming for personal reasons.
“It was a double-edged sword – I got some
fantastic contacts, including Lord Sugar. After
I left he sent me a really sweet email saying that
if the personal things in my life hadn’t come
when they did it would have been a different
story. I thought, ‘What a sweetie pie!’ He’s got
a sensitive side you don’t often see.”
And male sensitivity, it turns out, is the main
reason Lock started Gentry. “I kept meeting men
who were frustrated by the amount of irritation
80JetAway
Facing The Future
The Apprentice’s Adele Lock is building a gents’
grooming brand and showing Sir Alan who’s boss
they experienced when shaving,” she says. Lock
enrolled in The Incubator, a scheme run by the
Manchester Business School, and began to research
the subject in more depth. “The problems are to
do with the chemicals, the alcohol,” she explains.
“So we did a lot of research and I became interested
in natural moisturising factor (NMF) ingredients,
which are extremely beneficial to skin with no
negative side effects.”
She put together a brief and then approached
a cosmetics formulations expert, which created
samples over a period of three years. “I’m no
chemist,” Lock says, “but there’s a long process
of revisiting, revising and getting feedback until
eventually you get it right.” As of summer last year
her products are available in House of Fraser, where
she also has two shave centres, and, of course, you
can purchase them on this flight (see p110).
In addition to its product range, Gentry also
has a small chain of grooming salons for men.
The first opened in Manchester and branches in
Didsbury and Wilmslow have followed, although
the recession has slowed down their expansion
ambitions (“A sure-fire way to go bust is to
over-trade.”). Right now the focus is on the
products, which, Lock believes, will help drive
the brand (a range of make-up for men is in the
pipeline) and make it easier to open salons in new
areas. “Brand awareness is the biggest challenge for
us. Outside the northwest we’re still unknown.”
“You’ve got to be prepared for blood, sweat and
tears when you go into business,” she says. “Half
the people going on The Apprentice haven’t got the
first idea of what business is like.” Lock put in
the hours and learned business the hard way.
The UNESCO-listed Roman mosaics near Paphos harbour
are impressively well preserved. The highlight is the House
the mosaic of Theseus slaying the minotaur. It’s not as
easy as he makes it look.
Aphrodite’s Rock
On the coast close to Paphos, this is the spot where the
goddess of love was supposedly born. According to local
legend, if you swim around Petra Tou Romiou, as the rock
is also known, you’ll be blessed with eternal beauty. If that
sounds good to be true, it’s because it is: the seas round
here are choppy, so swimming is strongly discouraged – in
spite of the potential cosmetic benefits.
HELPING HEROES
Jet2.com is pledging to support
the heroes who have fought for
our country by helping them to
consider whether a move into
commercial aviation could be
right for them. Jet2.com hosted a
seminar for service pilots looking
to leave the forces at The Aviation
Academy and onboard one of its
757 aircraft at Leeds Bradford
Airport. Following news that 5,000
redundancies being imposed on
the RAF, the session allowed the
pilots to discuss options of how
they could continue their flying
careers with a commercial airline.
LEG UP
For Summer 2011 Jet2.com’s fleet
of aircraft has been completely
refurbed with new ergonomically
designed seating, sculpted to
increase knee and leg room,
allowing you to stretch your legs,
and thinner to create more space
between the seat in-front – all this
making your inflight experience
more spacious and comfortable.
Managing director of Jet2.
com, Ian Doubtfire, said, “Greater
customer comfort is underpinned
by Jet2.com’s more for less ethos
– where our customers receive a
friendly service, convenient flight
times, allocated seating and a
generous 22kg baggage allowance.”
IT’S ALL GO
FROM GLASGOW
The first flight, bound for Alicante,
took off from Jet2.com’s exciting
new base at Glasgow Airport on 31
March marking a new era for Jet2.
com and Jet2holidays in Scotland.
The city, sun and ski destinations
from Glasgow complement the
destinations already offered from
Edinburgh. Managing director
of Jet2.com, Ian Doubtfire said,
“We are very excited about our
new base at Glasgow. We have
recruited a great team of local
people who are looking forward to
providing our friendly Jet2.com
service to the people of Glasgow.”
Steve Heapy, managing director of
Jet2holidays, commented, “These
new flights from Glasgow make
great quality package holidays
available to the people of Glasgow
at great value prices.”
LOVE IS IN THE AIR
Manchester residents looking to find
love should consider a career with
Jet2.com. Of the 140 employees
based at Manchester Airport, five
couples who met through the airline
have tied the knot in the past two
years, with several more in steady
relationships or about to replace the
aircraft aisle with the church aisle.
Our cabin crew couples include
Craig Watson-Parke, an aircraft
engineer, and cabin crew member
Leanne, who met on a Jet2.com
plane three and a half years ago
and tied the knot on a Jet2holidays
break in Cyprus. They now have a
16-month old son, Bradley.

Jet2holidays News
NINE NIGHTS?
According to new figures,
British holidaymakers are
opting for holiday durations
that make better use of their
annual holiday entitlement,
which means the decline of the
traditional seven or 14 night
holidays. Jet2holidays offers
A REAL WINNER
Jet2holidays and Leeds Rhinos
have teamed up to launch
RhinosHolidays, an exclusive
holiday club with a commission
from each booking going
directly to the rugby club.
The partnership offers Rhinos
supporters the chance to book
great value package holidays to
over 40 destinations and help
fund their team at the same
time. The destinations are idea
for family holidays, city breaks
and supporting the Rhinos at
away games. Packages start at
just £169 per person including
transfers and a 22kg baggage
allowance.
flexible durations from one to
42 nights so that people can
choose the perfect length of
their holiday without feeling
restricted, and return home
afterwards without feeling
stressed.
Jet2holidays worked with life
coach Jo Orgill who said: “For
many, a nine-night trip is the
ideal as it enables people to
have a clear seven-day holiday
between their travel days at
either end of the trip. After more
than a week away we feel we
have a better work/life balance
and as a result feel more rested
and less stressed.”
BONUS BREAKS
Make the most of the unique way
the bank holidays fall this year,
by only using 14 days’ annual
leave to get 39 days away! With
the extra bank holiday from the
Royal Wedding along with the
late Easter in 2011, workers are
realising they only need to use a
few days of annual leave to get an
11-day break. And at Christmas
if you fly on Friday 23 and return
on 2 January you may only need
to use three days for a 10-day
break. Jet2holidays offers flexible
durations of one to 42 nights
enabling people to choose the
perfect length of their holiday and
make the most of their time off.
TAKING FLIGHT
The first ever Jet2holidays aircraft
took to the skies in March with
the strapline “Package holidays
you can trust” emblazoned across
the top of the fuselage. The 757
aircraft will be flying sunseekers to
great destinations including Spain,
Portugal and Turkey. This is the
first of three aircraft that will be
sporting the Jet2holidays brand for
Summer 2011.
PARK LIFE
Why have one home when you can have two? Investing in
a residential park home in the UK could mean just that
Owning more than one home doesn’t have to be as expensive as you
might think. Residential park homes provide genuinely affordable, lowmaintenance
properties in delightful, secure living environments and
many parks have staff living on site, so even when you’re not around,
someone is on hand to deal with any problems that may arise. Prices
start as low as £40,000, so this makes it possible to own a park home in
the UK (either as your primary residence, or as a holiday home) and still
maintain a property elsewhere. We’ve highlighted four great park and
holiday homes to give you some food for thought.
Olympic Park Home Estate
This family-run business is owned
and operated by the Thornley
family, who have over 46 years
experience in the park industry.
Their two residential park home
estates, Delamere Grove near
Chester and Carrwood Park near
Preston, are exclusive to retired
or semi-retired people, aged
55 or older. Suitable for yearround
living, both parks provide
secure environments in tranquil
surroundings. There is a range of
vacant plots to accommodate a new
park home of your choice, as well
as a selection of previously owned
homes to choose from.
Greenwood Parks
Park is close to
Thirsk and is set
a stately home,
complete with its
a lake. Alternatively
Tollerton Holiday
Park is a smaller site, situated
close to York. All the parks’ staff
pride themselves on their level of
service, with live-in managers on
SAFETY ONBOARD RESPONSIBLE FLYING WITH JET2.COM
Safety & Comfort
Most of the following guidelines are
mandatory under Civil Aviation Authority
Regulations to make sure your flight is safe,
comfortable and enjoyable
SAFETY ONBOARD
Knowing what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency could
make all the difference to you and your family. The safety
information card in your seat pocket and the cabin crew’s safety
briefing give you vital information on the location of exits and
emergency equipment. As this can vary from one airline to
another it is important to pay attention to the safety briefing and
read the safety card each time you fly. Our crew are specially
trained to ensure your safety and security at all times. It is an
offence to refuse to obey any lawful command of the captain or
cabin crew. Our primary concern is YOUR safety at all times.
MOBILE PHONES
To prevent interference to the aircraft communication and
control systems the use of mobile phones or any other wireless
communication devices is restricted onboard. Mobiles must not
be used for internet access, text messaging or voice calls while
onboard the aircraft. If your device is fitted with a “flight mode”
or something similar you should switch it to this before the
aircraft doors are closed to prevent any accidental transmission
or reception.
SEATBELTS
Seatbelts protect you from injury and you are recommended to
keep your belt fastened throughout the flight, and must do so
whenever the seatbelt sign is switched on (during taxi, take-off,
landing and turbulence). Adjust the seatbelt so that it is tight
but comfortable with the buckle the right way around so that it
can be easily released. Infants travelling on a passenger’s lap
will require an infant seatbelt, which our cabin crew will happily
fit for you.
SMOKING
Smoking is NOT PERMITTED on any of our flights, and for the
safety of all our passengers the toilet compartments are fitted
with highly sensitive smoke detectors. Violation of this law may
lead to prosecution and a substantial fine.
ALCOHOL
Please bear in mind the fact that high altitude increases the
physical effects of alcohol, so moderate consumption is
recommended. It is illegal to be intoxicated onboard an aircraft.
96JetAway
The consumption of any alcoholic beverage onboard other than
those that have been supplied from the in-flight bar is not
permitted and the crew are authorised to remove alcohol from
passengers drinking from their own supplies.
PASSENGER BEHAVIOUR
Jet2.com expects our passengers to behave in a responsible
manner and we will not tolerate unacceptable behaviour. This
includes foul language and any other behaviour that reduces
other passengers’ enjoyment of the flight and causes them, or
our staff, any degree of distress, discomfort or unnecessary
inconvenience. We reserve the right to ban passengers from
future flights if their behaviour is a threat to the safety of our
passengers or crew.
HAND LUGGAGE
One small piece of hand luggage is allowed per person, providing
its weight is less than 10kg and it is no larger than 56cm x
45cm x 25cm including wheels and handles. Any piece of
baggage that does
not meet these requirements will be placed in the hold and the
relevant fee will be charged. Any other excess hand luggage will
be placed in the hold. Light or soft articles should be stowed in
the overhead luggage compartments, heavier items under seats.
Items lying loose on empty seats or obstructing the aisles or
emergency exits are dangerous and you will be asked to remove
them.
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
Once the aircraft is at cruising altitude and the captain has
turned off the “Fasten Seat Belt” sign, you are free to use
laptops, CD players, MP3 players, computer games and most
other electronic items. The use of electronic equipment of any
kind is not permitted during taxi, take-off and landing.
COMFORT
Changes in the cabin air pressure may cause some slight
discomfort in your ears. You can relieve this by swallowing hard,
yawning or holding your nose while gently breathing out with
your mouth closed. Flying also causes your body to dehydrate so
you are advised to have something to drink that is not alcoholic.
For your further comfort, please also refer to the recommended
exercises on the opposite page of this magazine.
IN-FLIGHT SERVICE
On your flight we will be offering you a comprehensive choice of
hot and cold drinks as well as a selection of delicious snacks,
Stretch Onboard
Short flights to continental European destinations are
less likely to lead to a risk of deep vein thrombosis
(DVT) than long-haul flights. Nevertheless, it’s good
to stretch out. It’s not easy to walk around onboard,
so for your own comfort and relaxation, why not try
some of these seated exercises?
KNEE RAISE
With your hands clasped
together, pull your left
knee up as close as
possible to your chest
1
Remember that extreme
dehydration can increase the risk
of DVT, so drink plenty of water
and minimise your alcohol, tea and
coffee consumption during the flight.
and hold for a count of
eight, then return to a
sitting position. Relax. Do
the same with your right
FEET
A Flex your foot at the ankle
and stretch out as far as you
can. Bend your toes forward
and back. Slowly rotate your
foot using a circular motion
clockwise, then anticlockwise.
Relax. Repeat with
the right foot.
knee. Then with both knees.
Repeat four times. Relax.
Bend forward and gently
massage both calf muscles.
B With your feet on the tips
of your toes, raise and lower
your legs. Relax. Repeat
several times.
C Clench and unclench your
toes. Relax. Repeat several
times.
D Stretch your toes. Relax.
THREE THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND ON YOUR TRAVELS
3
2
You will arrive at your destination
feeling much better if you sit
correctly, with your weight
balanced evenly on both buttocks and
without crossing your legs.
A P R I L / M A Y
ANKLE ROTATION
With your feet slightly raised
off the floor, rotate your ankles
10 times towards each other
and then 10 times away from
each other.
SHOULDER
LOOSENER
Hunch your shoulders together,
drop, repeat. Rotate your
shoulders one at a time with a
gentle circular motion, first
forwards, then backwards.
HEAD AND
SHOULDERS
Sitting well back in your seat,
in a comfortable position with
your back and shoulders well
supported, turn your head to the
right as far as you can, then
slowly raise and lower your chin
three times. Relax. Repeat,
turning your head to the left this
time. Repeat.
SHOULDER
STRETCH
Grasp your left shoulder with
your right hand, then place your
left hand behind your right
elbow. Gently press your elbow
toward your shoulder. Hold the
stretch for 15 seconds and
Try deep-breathing exercises to relax. Sit back
in your seat in a comfortable position, close your
eyes and take a deep breath. Hold
it for a while, then exhale and say the word “relax”.
Repeat four or five times.
