3. DESCRIPTION OF AIR EXERCISE<br />

a. APPLICABLE PROCEDURES AND CHECKLISTS<br />

b. AIRCRAFT HANDLING TECHNIQUES:-<br />

DEMONSTRATION OBSERVATION<br />

1. DESCENDING TURN<br />

i. From a straight glide, enter a descending turn<br />

at 15° angle of bank, whilst maintaining<br />

recommended gliding speed.<br />

ii.<br />

iii.<br />

Lower flaps in stages during the gliding turn<br />

and repeat above exercise at flaps down<br />

gliding speed.<br />

Repeat exercise using partial power at<br />

recommended descent speed.<br />

i. Note attitude and rate of descent before<br />

entry.<br />

ii. Lookout before commencing turn.<br />

iii. Engine considerations.<br />

iv. Entry and recovery similar to that for a<br />

medium turn.<br />

a. Maintain constant angle of bank.<br />

b. Constant airspeed.<br />

c. Check balance (slip and skid).<br />

d. Note increase rate of descent.<br />

1) Note attitude required for the<br />

descending turn.<br />

2) Tendency for aircraft to roll out<br />

of turn (hold on bank).<br />

3) Instrument indications.<br />

4) Engine temperatures and<br />

pressures.<br />

v. Recover from gliding turn to a straight glide.<br />

vi. Repeat exercise to opposite side and note<br />

attitude.<br />

vii. Repeat exercise rolling out onto preselected<br />

heading/ground feature.<br />

i. During flap extension adjust nose<br />

attitude/airspeed to recommended flap<br />

down gliding speed.<br />

ii. Note change in:<br />

a. Nose attitude.<br />

b. Rate of descent.<br />

c. Instrument indications.<br />

iii. Maintain the gliding turn and adjust nose<br />

attitude/airspeed to recommended flapless<br />

gliding speed whilst retracting the flaps.<br />

i. During the gliding turn, apply partial power<br />

ii. Note changes in:<br />

a. Note attitude.<br />

b. Rate of descent.<br />

c. Instrument indications.<br />

iii. Note:<br />

a. Throttle (power) controls the rate of<br />

descent.<br />

b. Control column (elevator) controls the<br />

speed.<br />

iv. Recover as before, reducing power to that<br />

required for a normal gliding turn.<br />
