viii. Holding position prior to run-up, same as for<br />

ix. Before take-off checks same as for day.<br />

3. LINING UP AND TAKE-OFF RUN i. Look out – approach and runway clear.<br />

ii. Radio call.<br />

iii. Lining up:<br />

a. Tail/nose wheel straight.<br />

b. Compass/DI aligned with runway<br />

QDM.<br />

c. Reference point is the last visible flare<br />

or horizon light.<br />

d. Position ailerons for take-off and<br />

estimate drift correction to be applied<br />

after take-off according to wind.<br />

iv. Maintain direction during take-off run by<br />

means of flare path, with glances at DI.<br />

v. Lift-off speed – slightly higher than normal.<br />

4. BECOMING AIRBORNE At lift-off speed:<br />

i. Transfer attention to Artificial Horizon (A/H)<br />

and rotate aircraft to pre-determined attitude<br />

for best angle of climb speed.<br />

ii. Maintain this attitude on the Artificial Horizon<br />

(A/H) and refer to altimeter and VSI for<br />

positive rate of climb.<br />

5. CLIMB AWAY i. Confirm continuous positive rate of climb.<br />

ii. Apply brake – select U/C up if applicable.<br />

iii. Establish recommended climb speed.<br />

iv. Allow for the drift – if applicable.<br />

v. Maintain instrument scan.<br />

vi. At a minimum of 300ft agl. – complete after<br />

take-off checks.<br />

vii. At a minimum of 500ft agl. use instruments<br />

or visual aids, or both according to prevailing<br />

conditions.<br />

6. CROSSWIND LEG i. As for normal day circuit – use 15° bank<br />

angle in climbing turn and visually check<br />

position of runway lights in relation to<br />

aircraft.<br />

7. DOWNWIND LEG AT CIRCUIT ATTITUDE As for day flying, but:<br />

i. Fly downwind leg parallel to flare path using<br />

DI/visual references, but keep slightly closer<br />

to the runway in case of engine failure. Note<br />

position.<br />

ii. Do not converge with flare path – maintain<br />

desired distance from flare path, allowing for<br />

drift.<br />

iii. References for circuit positioning and turn<br />

onto base leg are relative to aircraft and flare<br />
