1. AIM<br />

LESSON 26<br />

IFR EMERGENCIES<br />

The aim of this exercise is to prepare the student for any emergency that my be experienced whilst<br />

flying under IFR.<br />

DEFINITION<br />

An IFR emergency may be defined as being any emergency which occurs whilst flying under<br />

Instrument <strong>Flight</strong> Rules.<br />

2. WHY IT IS BEING TAUGHT<br />

This exercise is taught so that the student will have a basic knowledge from which to work in the event<br />

that an emergency occurs while flying IFR.<br />

3. WHAT THE INSTRUCTOR IS TO TEACH (Briefing of 2:00 hr.)<br />

i. Radio failure procedures.<br />

ii. Revise instrument failure recognition.<br />

iii. Discuss severe weather procedures.<br />

iv. Discuss engine failure procedures.<br />

v. Discuss navigation radio failure.<br />

vi. Discuss low fuel procedures.<br />

vii. Discuss the declaring of an emergency.<br />

viii. Discuss electrical failure.<br />

ix. Discuss how an approach can be shortened in a dire emergency.<br />

4. THE AIR EXERCISE<br />

This exercise should be used as a final session for the student to consolidate the general flying aspects<br />

of instrument flying before the flight test. As a suggestion the following exercises should be covered in<br />

the aircraft with all the emergencies in a simulator.<br />

RECOVERY FROM UNUSUAL ATTITUDES<br />

OPERATION AT MINIMUMSPEED ON FULL PANEL<br />
