5. CONSIDERATIONS OF AIRMANSHIP AND ENGINE HANDLING<br />

AIRMANSHIP<br />

i. The student should be aware of altitudes.<br />

ii. Weather awareness.<br />

iii. Radio work.<br />

iv. Setting the correct QNH.<br />

v. Fuel awareness.<br />

vi. The failed instruments must be covered.<br />

vii. An emergency must be declared.<br />

viii. Diversion to better weather should be considered.<br />

ENGINE HANDLING<br />

Excessive engine cooling and overheating is possible as the student will probably be inclined to forget<br />

the engine instruments due to the high workload when flying with some malfunctioning instruments.<br />

6. SIMILARITY TO PREVIOUS EXERCISES<br />

This exercise combines the principles of the VOR approach on full panel as well as flight with limited<br />

panel.<br />

7. DE-BRIEFING AFTER THE FLIGHT<br />

Briefly recap on the exercise with particular emphasis on the following points:<br />

i. This is an emergency procedure and requires a lot of practice to remain proficient.<br />

ii. The student should always consider diverting to better weather.<br />

iii. Orientation when flying on limited panel can be difficult and the flying must under no<br />

circumstances be rushed.<br />

iv. Planning and briefing are extremely important.<br />

8. DISCUSS THE STUDENT’S ACTUAL FAULTS<br />

For each fault the instructor must indicate:<br />

i. The symptoms of the fault.<br />

ii. The cause of the fault.<br />

iii. The potential outcome of persisting with the fault.<br />

iv. The action necessary to correct the fault.<br />
