1. AIM<br />

LESSON 22<br />

THE NDB APPROACH ON LIMITED PANEL<br />

The aim of this exercise is to teach the student how to fly an NDB approach when an instrument failure<br />

has occurred.<br />

DEFINITION<br />

This exercise is defined as being the series of manoeuvres necessary to transition from the minimum<br />

safe altitude to a landing or missed approach when operating the aircraft in IMC with one or more<br />

instruments failed.<br />

2. WHY IT IS BEING TAUGHT<br />

This lesson is taught so that the student will be able to carry out an NDB approach when one or more<br />

instruments have failed. As an example the failure of the vacuum pump will usually result in the failure<br />

of the A/H and the DI. Other failures like a pitot/static system failure will also require special techniques<br />

in order to complete the flight safely.<br />

3. WHAT THE INSTRUCTOR IS TO TEACH<br />

i. The various failures that can occur.<br />

ii. How to recognize these failures.<br />

iii. How to cope with the failures.<br />

iv. How and when to declare an emergency.<br />

v. Recap on how to intercept a QDM/QDR using the parallel method.<br />

vi. Discuss the dangers of flying with instrument failure.<br />

vii. Flying the Circle to Land manoeuvre and the dangers of this manoeuvre.<br />

viii. Explain how the missed approach is flown from a Circle to Land manoeuvre.<br />

INTERCEPTING A QDM/QDR<br />

i. This is probably best taught using the parallel<br />

method of intercepting a QDM/QDR as the<br />

potential for mistakes through trying to<br />

calculate the required intercept heading<br />

using other methods is larger when the<br />

workload of flying with instrument failures is<br />

considered.<br />

ii. The student should be given sufficient<br />

practice at this task until reasonably<br />

proficient.<br />

i. The student should be given a few turning<br />

exercises on limited panel using a stopwatch.<br />

ii. The student should practice compass turns<br />

at this point. The instructor should remind<br />

the student of ONUS and have him turn onto<br />

appropriate headings until this method of<br />

turning has been mastered<br />
