LESSON 19<br />

THE VOR APPROACH – PART 2<br />

The aim of this lesson is to give the student time to consolidate the VOR approach.<br />

DEFINITION<br />

The VOR approach is defined as being the series of manoeuvres carried out when transitioning from<br />

the en route phase of flight to the landing or missed approach using the VOR for navigation.<br />

2. WHY IT IS BEING TAUGHT<br />

This lesson allows the student with enough time to consolidate the VOR approach before moving onto<br />

other Non-Precision Approaches.<br />

3. WHAT THE INSTRUCTOR IS TO TEACH (Briefing of 1:00 hr.)<br />

i. Recap on the VDP.<br />

ii. Recap on the correct timing for the outbound leg.<br />

iii. Recap on drift adjustment.<br />

4. THE AIR EXERCISE<br />

i. THE VOR APPROACH i. The student should be able to obtain the<br />

clearance and set the altimeter etc. with<br />

little or no help from the instructor.<br />

ii. The instructor should allow practice until<br />

reasonably proficient at the various<br />

approaches i.e. full approach and the<br />

procedure turn approach.<br />

5. CONSIDERATIONS OF AIRMANSHIP AND ENGINE HANDLING<br />

AIRMANSHIP<br />

i. The instructor must ensure that the student knows where he is and what he is supposed to be<br />

doing next.<br />

ii. The missed approach must be carried out correctly with a minimum of delay.<br />

iii. Altimeter setting must be obtained and set correctly.<br />

iv. The DI must be set correctly.<br />

v. The necessary clearances must be obtained with little or no prompting from the instructor.<br />

ENGINE HANDLING<br />

This should all be done correctly by the student with little or no prompting from the instructor.<br />
