5. CONSIDERATIONS OF AIRMANSHIP AND ENGINE HANDLING<br />

AIRMANSHIP<br />

i. Altitude awareness cannot be over emphasized.<br />

ii. Fuel planning and remaining fuel must be a high priority.<br />

iii. Weather awareness is vital.<br />

iv. The student should be asking himself the following three question.<br />

v. The NDB must be identified regularly.<br />

vi. Regularly apply the following:<br />

Where am I?<br />

Where am I going?<br />

What must I do next?<br />

vii. The D.I. must be checked against the compass.<br />

viii. The QNH must be obtained and set correctly.<br />

ENGINE HANDLING<br />

i. The instructor will obtain the necessary<br />

clearance for the approach as well as the<br />

weather details.<br />

ii. Due to the high workload the landing<br />

checklist will often be forgotten.<br />

iii. The inbound QDM is often ignored.<br />

iv. Students often forget to descend.<br />

i. The missed approach should be flown and<br />

the holding pattern be entered where the<br />

student can once again brief the instructor<br />

on what he is going to do.<br />

ii. The go-around should be done very<br />

smartly with emphasis on getting away<br />

from the ground ASAP.<br />

i. The approach should end with a landing<br />

rather than another missed approach.<br />

i. Fuel must be conserved.<br />

ii. Engine temperatures can become very low during the approach.<br />

iii. Power must be increased in the correct order and at the correct rate during the go-around.<br />

iv. Cowl flaps must be open for the go-around.<br />

6. SIMILARITY TO PREVIOUS EXERCISES<br />

This exercise is very similar to the previous exercise where holding patterns were flown.<br />

7. DE-BRIEFING AFTER THE FLIGHT<br />

Briefly recap on the various manoeuvres flown with particular reference to the following points:<br />

i. The planning and briefing of how the approach is to be carried out.<br />

ii. The timing of the outbound leg.<br />

iii. The speeds used.<br />

iv. The rates of descent.<br />
