LESSON 7<br />

INTRODUCTION TO NAVIGATION AIDS<br />

The aim of this lesson is to introduce the student to the ADF and the VOR.<br />

DEFINITION<br />

The VOR and ADF are used to assist the student in fixing a position and as homing aids while flying at<br />

night.<br />

2. WHAT THE INSTRUCTOR IS TO TEACH (Briefing of 1:00 hr.)<br />

i. How the ADF and VOR work.<br />

ii. How the ADF and VOR can be used as homing aids.<br />

iii. How to use the ADF and VOR to fix a position.<br />

iv. Various limitations and errors of the ADF and VOR. e.g. VOR line of sight and scalloping, ADF<br />

night effects, mountain effect and coastal effect.<br />

v. STRESS THAT NO AID SHOULD BE USED WITHOUT IDENTIFYING THE STATION!<br />

vi. An introduction to Radio Navigation Charts i.e. Jeppesen, Aerad and AIP charts.<br />

3. WHY IT IS BEING TAUGHT<br />

To enable the student to work out where he is in flight using the instruments in the aircraft and based<br />

on this information ensure that he is at or above the minimum safe altitude for the area.<br />

4. THE AIR EXERCISE<br />

i. This is as in earlier lessons.<br />

i. Include homing to an ADF or VOR station.<br />

Ensure that the station is tuned and<br />

identified before departure where possible,<br />

i.e. the VOR cannot always be received on<br />

the ground.<br />

i. Have the student tune and identify an NDB<br />

station. Then have the student home<br />

towards the station.<br />

ii. Have the student tune and identify a VOR<br />

station and home towards it.<br />

iii. Once the student is proficient at these<br />

exercises take control of the aircraft and<br />

teach the student how to fix his position<br />

using two VOR’s or ADF’s or a<br />

combination of the two.<br />

iv. Once the student has mastered the basic<br />

steps required to fix the position of the<br />

aircraft, hand control of the aircraft back to<br />

him and allow him to practice fixing his<br />

position whilst flying the aircraft.<br />
