vi. Prior to leaving the aircraft the instructor should, at controlled airfields, advise ATC of<br />

the impending solo flight.<br />

vii. The instructor should observe the student’s first solo flight and at a controlled airfield<br />

the instructor’s where-abouts should be know to the controller.<br />

ENGINE CONSIDERATIONS<br />

i. Engine control positions.<br />

a. RPM settings.<br />

b. Temperature and pressures.<br />

c. Magneto check.<br />

ii. Power check before take-off.<br />

iii. Reducing power after take-off – where applicable.<br />

d. SIMILARITY TO PREVIOUS EXERCISE<br />

i. Circuits and landings.<br />

e. DE-BRIEFING AFTER FLIGHT<br />

i. Briefly recap on the exercise and emphasise the important aspects applicable to:<br />

a. Encourage the student to be critical of his flying.<br />

b. Show the student how to make the necessary entry in his logbook.<br />

c. Enter in the student’s logbook the authority for him to fly solo in the circuit.<br />

ii. Discuss the common faults students usually make<br />

a. Panicking if something goes wrong in the aircraft.<br />

b. Not sticking to recognized procedures.<br />

c. Student is so keen to land the aircraft that he touches down at too high a<br />

speed.<br />

iii. Discuss the student actual faults.<br />

For each fault the instructor must indicate:<br />

a. The symptoms of the fault.<br />

b. The cause of the fault.<br />

c. The result the fault could have led to.<br />

d. The corrective action required.<br />

f. BRIEFLY DISCUSS THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE NEXT LESSON<br />
