1. AIM<br />

DEFINITION<br />

EXERCISE 13<br />

CIRCUIT, APPROACH AND LANDING<br />

The approach and landing phase may be considered to commence from after the turn onto the<br />

downwind leg to the touch down point on the runway and the completion of the landing roll.<br />

i. The Approach May be defined as that part of the circuit from after<br />

the turn onto the downwind leg, to the touch down.<br />

ii. The Final Approach Is considered to start from a point where the aircraft is<br />

some distance downwind of the runway, in line with it, and<br />

approaching on a descending flight path.<br />

iii. The Round-Out Is the change of attitude made from the descent part of<br />

the approach to a path level with and slightly above the<br />

ground.<br />

iv. The Hold-off or Float Describes a subsequent period in which the aircraft is<br />

flown parallel to the ground, with increasing angle of<br />

attack and decreasing airspeed, until the aircraft touches<br />

the ground.<br />

v. The Landing – (Touch-Down) Is the ultimate development of the hold-off, where the<br />

aircraft gradually approaches the stall in the landing<br />

attitude, followed by the touch-down just before the stall.<br />

vi. The Wheel Landing Is a type of landing done in tail wheel aircraft where the<br />

main wheels are placed on the ground before the tail<br />

wheel.<br />

WHAT THE INSTRUCTOR IS TO TEACH<br />

i. Discuss the principles involved.<br />

ii. The air exercise briefing:<br />

a. Applicable procedures and checklists.<br />

b. Aircraft handling techniques: - Demonstration and Observation.<br />

c. Considerations of airmanship and engine handling.<br />

d. Similarity to previous exercises.<br />

e. De-briefing after flight.<br />

WHY IT IS BEING TAUGHT<br />

To give the student a good understanding and thorough knowledge of the principles required to:<br />

i. Fly the aircraft in the circuit in an accurate manner.<br />

ii. Complete the before landing checks in the approved manner.<br />
