any hindrance in future, and an amicable agreement 1268.<br />

was made for <strong>it</strong>s restoration. Its erection had been Text, I. 41,<br />

no breach <strong>of</strong> the arrangement made in 1267, nor did<br />

such. Yet what say the historians? "In 1267 the Hist. Shby.,<br />

Be <strong>it</strong> known to all to whom these presents shall come : That all<br />

contest now raised and all controversies between the lord abbot and<br />

convent <strong>of</strong> Shrewsbury and the burgesses <strong>of</strong> Shrewsbury, regarding<br />

the destruction <strong>of</strong> the timbers <strong>of</strong> the watermill built on land <strong>of</strong> the<br />

said abbot and convent, called " The Gaye," on the Severn, and all<br />

other disputes, have been settled in this manner : viz. the burgesses
