Edward the King, &c. To the Treasurer and barons <strong>of</strong> his<br />

Exchequer at Dublin, greeting.<br />

Award to Nicholas de Balscote, custodian <strong>of</strong> our mills near the<br />

Castle <strong>of</strong> Dublin, upon his account rendered to the said Exchequer :—<br />

53s. 2d. which he expended in structural timber, boards, keys [or<br />

nails], and other necessaries purchased for the wheels <strong>of</strong> the said<br />

mills, newly constructed; as well as for the repair <strong>of</strong> divers other<br />

defects in the said mills— from December 18 in the fifth year <strong>of</strong><br />

our reign to March i in the seventh year <strong>of</strong> our reign ; as set forth<br />

in the roll <strong>of</strong> particulars :<br />

40s. 6d. which he expanded in the wages <strong>of</strong> various carpenters<br />

executing the repairs during the same period; as stated in the same roll :<br />

25s. 6id. which he expended in iron and in sharp points bought<br />

for picks, and other large and small necessary tools made for the<br />

as well as in the wages <strong>of</strong> sm<strong>it</strong>hs making and<br />

restoration <strong>of</strong> the mills ;<br />

sharpening and keeping in order the said tools as required ; w<strong>it</strong>hin<br />

the same : period<br />

28s. gd. which he expended in one Welsh millstone bought for<br />

the said mill ; and in the carriage and dressing <strong>of</strong> the same before<br />

<strong>it</strong> was fixed in <strong>it</strong>s place ; w<strong>it</strong>hin the same period :<br />

4s. 9d. which he expended in soap and oil for the use <strong>of</strong> the said<br />

mills as occasion required ; w<strong>it</strong>hin the same : period<br />

60s. T^d. expended in the keep <strong>of</strong> the horse serving the<br />

and in ironwork for the same :<br />

Unless the said amount you may have already awarded him by<br />

any other warrant <strong>of</strong> ours.<br />

6. In March 13 14 the mills were entrusted to two<br />

custodians (evidently lessees), Walter de Keppok and<br />

Randolph de Loung, who retained possession till<br />

March 13 19. At this date, upon their giving up possession<br />

to two sworn keepers, their accounts were aud<strong>it</strong>ed<br />

by the Exchequer, and <strong>it</strong> was then alleged against<br />

i8s. due<br />

them that they had not accounted for ^17<br />

on various <strong>it</strong>ems during the period <strong>of</strong> five years. In
