church <strong>of</strong> St. Mary, Walton. The mill-dam at<br />
Dublin was there before 1 1 79, when a deed attested<br />

the year 1195 Prince John granted Doubleday the<br />
s<strong>it</strong>e for his mill on the ancient mill-stream ; not long<br />
afterwards the monks <strong>of</strong> the abbey acquired the mill ;<br />
and ultimately, in 1248, Henry IIL established his<br />
Castle Mills on the same race, which then and down<br />
to modern times was the best spot w<strong>it</strong>hin the walls<br />
<strong>of</strong> Dublin for working a watermill.<br />
The corporation <strong>of</strong> Dublin are early found in<br />
possession<br />
<strong>of</strong> the new mills as leaseholders under the<br />
Crown ; a rental <strong>of</strong> Dublin c<strong>it</strong>y for about the year<br />
the memorandum that '*<br />

1290 containing<br />
used to render for the farm <strong>of</strong> the mills juxta<br />
Castle 13 marks [^8 13s. 4d.] per annum; but<br />

said mills are now in the hand <strong>of</strong> the lord the<br />
king." There is no actual record <strong>of</strong> this lease extant,<br />
apparently ; but if <strong>it</strong> were in existence in the time <strong>of</strong><br />
John la Warre, whose name as bailiff occurs in the same<br />
rental, <strong>it</strong> would be about the year 1245. Ere long, in<br />
any case, the leasing-out system was discontinued in<br />
favour <strong>of</strong> direct working on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Crown.<br />
