The association <strong>of</strong> the abbey w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>milling</strong> in<br />

the neighbourhood <strong>of</strong> the Castle is referable to an<br />

undated grant made to William Doubleday by John<br />

by William to his heir Germanus, who<br />

divided the property w<strong>it</strong>h the abbey :<br />

attached to <strong>it</strong>, including in <strong>it</strong>s soke district the<br />

s<strong>it</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the new Castle. The deeds for these transactions<br />

are annexed :—<br />

Sciatis me dedisse et concessisse et hac presenti carta mea<br />

confirmasse Willielmo Dubelday sedem unius molendini inter portam<br />

ecclesie Sancte Marie de Dublin et ecclesiam Sancti Andree et cursum<br />

aque quantum pertinet ad predictam sedem molendini, tenendos de<br />

me et heredibus meis illi et heredibus suis per servicium unius<br />

esturci sori per annum pro omni servicio.<br />

Quare volo et firm<strong>it</strong>er precipio quod predictus Willielmus et<br />

heredes sui post eum habeant et teneant predictam sedem molendini<br />

per predictum servicium bene et in pace libere et quiete integre et<br />

plenarie et honorifice cum omnibus libertatibus et liberis consuetudinibus<br />

que ad predictam sedem molendi pertinent.<br />

John, son <strong>of</strong> the Lord the King <strong>of</strong> England and Lord <strong>of</strong> Ireland,<br />

to the archbishops, bishops, abbots, earls, barons, justiciaries, constables,<br />

and all bailiffs and <strong>of</strong>ficials, and his fa<strong>it</strong>hful people, French<br />

and English, and Irish <strong>of</strong> the whole <strong>of</strong> Ireland, greeting :—<br />

Know ye that by me is dedicated and conceded and by this my<br />

present charter is confirmed to William Doubleday the s<strong>it</strong>e <strong>of</strong> one<br />

mill between the gate <strong>of</strong> the church <strong>of</strong> St. Mary <strong>of</strong> DubHn and the<br />

church <strong>of</strong> St. Andrew, also the watercourse so far as <strong>it</strong> appertains to<br />

the said s<strong>it</strong>e : he and his heirs to hold the same <strong>of</strong> me and my heirs<br />

by the presentation <strong>of</strong> one hawk per annum for all services.<br />

Wherefore I will and firmly enjoin that the said William and his<br />

heirs after him have and hold by the said service the said mill s<strong>it</strong>e<br />

well and in peace, freely and quietly, wholly and fully, and w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

honour; w<strong>it</strong>h all liberties and free customs which belong to the<br />

said s<strong>it</strong>e.
