In July 1577 Port Mote ''enquired <strong>of</strong> the casting<br />

down <strong>of</strong> a stone coppe or d<strong>it</strong>ch, being near unto Liverpool/<br />
Estham Mylne, adjoining the land <strong>of</strong> Mr. Starkie, 8. Eastham<br />
which was cast down by the appointment <strong>of</strong> Alice Windmill.<br />
Abraham, widow, late wife <strong>of</strong> Richard Abraham"; i763_^6o6.<br />
for which <strong>of</strong>fence she was fined in October following port Mote,<br />
twelve pence."^ In 1586 Queen Elizabeth renewed "• ^44, 1 53-<br />
Molyneux's lease ; he to<br />
" repair, sustain, make<br />
and maintain the aforesaid mills, as well concerning<br />
stones called millstones as otherwise, at his own<br />
proper costs and charges." In 1587 public hostil<strong>it</strong>y<br />
to the mills was once more rampant, and on this<br />
occasion Molyneux had recourse to law ; bringing an<br />
action against the prominent <strong>of</strong>fenders, as related<br />
more appropriately in connection w<strong>it</strong>h Townsend Text, post,<br />
Mill ; and entering on his bill <strong>of</strong> complaint Eastham ^*<br />
Milne first in the list <strong>of</strong> holdings under the town lease.<br />
In the next year (1588) evidence <strong>of</strong> identification <strong>of</strong><br />
the s<strong>it</strong>e occurs ; Richard Gelybrand granting Ralph<br />
Sekerston certain " land in the town field <strong>of</strong> Liver- Okill MSS.,<br />
pool, in a place called Estham Dale, viz. the fifth<br />
land from the wyndmille called the Estham Milne."<br />
In 158^ the Molyneux rental t includes the receipt <strong>of</strong><br />
40S. per annum from John Bolton, <strong>of</strong> Eastham, for<br />
*'the mill there called Eastham Milne"; out <strong>of</strong> which<br />
sum 25s. was payable to the Crown. In 1598 Richard<br />
Bolton is found paying the same rental ; and again in<br />
1606.<br />
