<strong>National</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>Service</strong> FY 2013 Budget Justifications<br />

involves creating a sign that interprets the natural, historical, and cultural resources of the Cooper<br />

Landing area.<br />

• Hope Social Hall historic archeology, grounds, and fencing: Sponsored by the Hope and Sunrise<br />

Historical Society, this project will support Section 106 requirements of the <strong>National</strong> Historic<br />

Preservation Act to survey the Hope Social Hall before construction commences on<br />

restoring/repairing the building’s foundation.<br />

• Mariner’s Memorial Harbor Front Monument: Sponsored by the Seward Memorial Committee, this<br />

monument will pay tribute to the mariners who have lost their lives at sea and honor the long<br />

nautical history of Seward.<br />

• Nordic/Multi-Use Trail System: Sponsored by the Girdwood Nordic Ski Club, developing this<br />

section of trail in Glacier-Winner Creek Valley will restore one section of the extensive and<br />

historic Iditarod trail system.<br />

• Curriculum: Sponsored by the Kenai Mountains Turnagain Arm (KMTA) Corridor Communities<br />

Association, and in partnership with the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and Chugach<br />

<strong>National</strong> Forest, this project will develop curriculum for local schools about the rich history of the<br />

KMTA <strong>National</strong> Heritage Area. Project includes conducting field trips with local experts on history,<br />

natural history, and cultural resources.<br />

• Darien Lindgren Cabin: Sponsored by the Kenaitze Indian Tribe, this partnership will help restore<br />

and preserve a historic cabin that was at one time located on the site of a Denai’ina Athabascan<br />

Indian village. Restoration of the cabin will help preserve and promote Dena’ina cultural history<br />

long into the future.<br />

Lackawanna Heritage Valley (1996) works with a variety of partners to strengthen and enhance the<br />

development and preservation of the historic, cultural, natural, and economic resources of the<br />

communities along the Lackawanna River in northeastern Pennsylvania. The architecture, ethnic<br />

traditions, and infrastructure of the Anthracite region tell the story of the Lackawanna Valley and its role in<br />

the industrial development of the United States. Projects that will utilize <strong>NPS</strong> Heritage Partnerships<br />

Funding in 2012 include:<br />

• Construct two sections of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail – South Scranton to Taylor, and<br />

Jermyn to Archbald.<br />

• Reprint book, “Pennsylvania’s Northeast Treasures”.<br />

• Reprint booklet, “A History Set in Stone,” an architectural walking tour of downtown Scranton.<br />

• Establish and implement a trail guidebook and signage manual.<br />

• Offer technical assistance to partners for public interpretation, cultural conservation, and historic<br />

preservation.<br />

• Implement historic preservation projects in collaboration with partners.<br />

Mississippi Delta <strong>National</strong> Heritage Area (2009) in Mississippi includes all the counties in the state that<br />

contain land in the alluvial floodplain of the Mississippi river. This area was cleared for cotton and<br />

plantation life, and peopled by sharecroppers and land owners, including immigrants from Europe and<br />

Asia. Many people from this region became the source of “The Great Migration” north, and thus the family<br />

home of many living today in northern cities, like Chicago and Detroit. It is an area known as “The<br />

Birthplace of the Blues” and Gospel music as well as many sites that were pivotal in the early civil rights<br />

movement. Projects that will utilize <strong>NPS</strong> Heritage Partnerships Funding in 2012 include:<br />

• Continue to work on completion of the management plan. Estimate completion in 2013.<br />
