<strong>National</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>Service</strong> FY 2013 Budget Justifications<br />

FY 2012 <strong>National</strong> Heritage Area Activities:<br />

Abraham Lincoln <strong>National</strong> Heritage Area (2008) is home to a unique collection of American history<br />

surrounding Lincoln’s life; raising his family; and pursuing his passion for the law and politics. This fortytwo<br />

county region of central Illinois shares a mission to preserve, interpret, and promote the heritage and<br />

culture of the area, in the context of Lincoln’s life in Illinois. They seek to inform and educate, develop and<br />

interpret historic sites, create living history experiences, chronicle the evolution of the area’s landscape,<br />

and extend these opportunities to the largest audience possible. Visitors will find the courthouses, log<br />

cabins, hotels, and homes where Lincoln argued cases and entertained his neighbors and friends. The<br />

cultural landscape provides insight into Lincoln’s character and personal development, as he prepared to<br />

take office during our country’s greatest challenge – the Civil War. Projects that will utilize <strong>NPS</strong> Heritage<br />

Partnerships Funding in 2012 include:<br />

• Finalization of management plan.<br />

• Early implementation of management plan.<br />

• <strong>National</strong> Heritage Area Teacher Workshops.<br />

• House Museum Training and implementation.<br />

• Partnership with Lincoln Land Community College in offering continued interpretive training and<br />

certification.<br />

America’s Agricultural Partnership (Silos and Smokestacks) <strong>National</strong> Heritage Area (1996) is a<br />

thirty-seven county area in northeast Iowa, whose mission it is to interpret farm life, agribusiness, and<br />

rural communities, past and present, for all age groups of visitors. Through partnership sites and<br />

activities, they preserve and celebrate the land, people, and communities of the area. SSNHA tells the<br />

story of American agriculture and its global impact in small towns and large cities, trails and county roads;<br />

and through farms, natural areas, local museums, and historical buildings. Projects that will utilize <strong>NPS</strong><br />

Heritage Partnerships Funding in 2012 include:<br />

• Complete and launch interpretive manual for emerging and partner sites.<br />

• Conduct partner site regional dialogues around issues impacting the heritage area and partner<br />

site evaluation process.<br />

• Enable grant programs including general, interpretive planning, intern, and bus grants.<br />

• Provide one-on-one technical assistance to emerging sites.<br />

• Provide technical assistance to do partner site visits, workshops, and webinars.<br />

• Expand Midwest Regional Awareness program developing heritage area gateway criteria and<br />

process for designation.<br />

• Begin self-evaluation process for designated partner sites and design evaluation process.<br />

• Design and implement new heritage area website with partner sites; redesign website to better<br />

engage visitors and incorporate additional interpretation of America’s agricultural story.<br />

• Hold seasonal agriculture-based educational youth camps.<br />

• Revise and update Personnel Policy Handbook.<br />

Arabia Mountain <strong>National</strong> Heritage Area (2006) is located in parts of three counties east of the city of<br />

Atlanta, Georgia, and comprises a region of active quarries, rolling topography, rural landscapes, and<br />

unique granite outcrop ecosystems, wetland, and pine and oak forests that include federally-protected<br />

plant species. Panola Mountain, a <strong>National</strong> Natural Landmark, is a rare example of a pristine granite<br />

outcrop characteristic of the area. Arabia Mountain and Stone Mountain possess sites that display the<br />

history of granite mining as an industry and culture in Georgia and its impact on the United States.<br />

Projects that will utilize <strong>NPS</strong> Heritage Partnerships Funding in 2012 include:<br />

• The heritage area is beginning its first strategic planning process to determine the programming<br />

and infrastructure priorities laid out in the management plan.<br />

• Stabilization of several historic resources including coordinating with Panola Mountain State <strong>Park</strong><br />

on a reuse of the historic <strong>Park</strong>er House and pursing a memorandum of agreement / lease with<br />

DeKalb County of the historic Lyon Farm.<br />
