Increases coagulant activity of Factor VIII as well as the<br />

Von Willebrand Factor, plasminogen activator is also<br />

released<br />

Vasodilation<br />

Antidiuretic effect: increases H2O re-absorption in the renal<br />

collecting tubule (acts on V1 receptors only)<br />

Bleeding in patients with uraemia, congenital or drug<br />

induced platelet dysfunction. (Maximum effect within 4<br />

hours of dose)<br />

Diabetes Insipidus, including that induced by brain death /<br />

head injury<br />

0.3 - 0.4 mcg/kg as a stat dose as ordered by Medical<br />

Officer.<br />

Doses greater than 4mcg must be diluted only in 100ml<br />

N/S and infuse over 20 minutes<br />

NB: Much lower doses used for Diabetes Insipidus.<br />

1 to 4 mcg daily in divided doses. Start at 0.5mcg IV stat.<br />

Dose related:<br />

Tachycardia, decrease in diastolic BP<br />

Headache, nausea, vomiting, mild abdominal cramps<br />

Nasal congestion, facial flushing, vulval pain,<br />

H2O intoxication from over hydration.<br />

Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease<br />

and the elderly.<br />

<strong>Care</strong> must be taken to prevent fluid overload in patients at<br />

risk of raised ICP.<br />

Continuous ECG monitoring<br />

Infusion pump and giving set<br />

Strict fluid balance (hourly input / output measurement)<br />

Daily electrolyte measurement when initiating therapy<br />

Daily weight<br />
