August 2010
Dear students, parents and staff of the International School Basel,
Welcome to the ECP Autumn/Fall 2010 programme! And welcome to all new and returning families!
We hope that you will enjoy reading through the new autumn 2010 ECP programme and discovering all the activities that
have been put together for you this semester. In addition to our ‘regulars and favourites’ there are also many new and
exciting classes, courses and workshops on offer. After-school activities and sports help our students to stay active,
integrate with their peers and make new friends outside of the classroom. For parents we offer the opportunity to get
together and socialise in relaxed and non-pressured settings. The ECP programme offers wonderful ways to get
acquainted with the area and to meet new friends as well as providing the opportunity to try many different activities with
a group of like-minded people. We are confident that there really is something for everybody, however, if you think our
programme is missing just the course you were looking for, then do let us know – perhaps we can offer it in a subsequent
programme or help with finding you a local club or team to play your favourite sport. Please take the time to read through
the programme carefully – our schedule can and does change from term to term dependant on availability of teachers and
coaches and to enable us to provide our students with as many innovative and varied opportunities as possible as well as
to enhance integration of new ISB families into our community. If the activity that your child is interested in is not on
offer this programme, please contact Seraina Schnider at the ECP office for details of opportunities outside of the ISB.
Returning families will already be familiar with the ECP programme, know the registration procedure and are aware of how
popular the programme is. New families are encouraged to read through the programme carefully in order to become
acquainted with the courses on offer and to ensure understanding of how to apply.
ALL FAMILIES ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO READ THROUGH THE INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THIS PAGE
AND OVERLEAF IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE FAMILIAR WITH ECP RULES AND POLICES. Often the
small print has the most important information! Hopefully all your questions will be answered and details
clarified.
NO CONFIRMATIONS WILL BE SENT OUT: You are automatically confirmed when you sign up unless you hear from us. We
contact you only when a class is full, cancelled or if details change, otherwise no news is good news. Please turn up on
the 1 st scheduled date in the programme. We will notify participants if there is a waiting list or if the class is cancelled. We
will do our best to accommodate your wishes, but cannot always guarantee you get all the classes you select. Many courses
require minimum numbers. When in doubt, give us a call. Please be advised that although we do try to accommodate as
many students as possible, popular classes do fill up quickly and we are limited to the number of children who can participate
in any given activity. Participation in a class/course last term does not guarantee a place in the same class this programme.
You are kindly requested to only sign up your child for a class that you know they will be able to attend on a
regular basis thereby avoiding empty spaces in an activity that could be filled by a child on the waiting list,
thank you! Missing more than 2 sessions in a course without a valid reason (contact ECP) may result in your
child losing their place.
STUDENTS BEHAVIOUR: Please note that the same standards of behaviour that are expected from ISB students during
the school day also apply to all ECP activities and workshops both on and offsite. It is important that your child understands
they are expected to behave in a respectful manner towards teachers/coaches at all times and you are asked to make sure
that they are aware of this. ECP reserves the right to withdraw a child from any activity if behavioural standards
are not adhered to. Coaches/Teachers are aware of this policy.
COURSE COSTS: As you will be responsible for payment, please show up for the courses and events that you
register for! Please be aware that the cancellation policy will be in place for all classes offered by the ECP department
(see overleaf for full details).
Have a look at the new ECP Autumn 2010 programme and the large selection of sports classes, language courses, cooking,
arts and crafts workshops etc on offer – you are sure to find something that you/your children will enjoy.
challenges outside of the school, but would like to wish everyone farewell and say ‘thank you’ for the wonderful
enthusiasm for the ECP programmes that she has received over the past two years. Seraina Schnider has come aboard
as new ECP Co-ordinator and will work from the new ECP office located on the ISB Reinach campus in room A.10 on the
REGISTRATION PROCEDURE
An application form is included in this programme. Please
submit one per family. See the A-Z listing for course
numbers, costs and details. For information and
registration of courses not offered by the ECP
department, please contact the person listed directly.
Registration for all ECP activities will be accepted from
Monday September 6 2010 at 07:45 in the foyer of
both the Aesch and Reinach campuses.
Applications are numbered as they are turned in and
processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each collection
location will use separate numbers. Early applications
cannot be accepted and will be returned.
Applications for multiple families or groups of friends
together will not be accepted.
Please, no earlier than 7:45am!
REMINDER- Mark your calendars!
Not all classes/course start on the same date!
Please check the start and end dates of the courses you are
registering for and read the information pertaining to each
class in the A-Z listing carefully, in order to avoid
misunderstandings. Please note that there will be classes
each week unless specifically stated in the schedule.
On days there are no ECP classes, please pick up your
children directly after school.
Credits for Senior School Students: Please note that
participation in an ECP class will only be noted on your
report if you attended 80% of all scheduled classes.
CANCELLATION POLICY & FEE
Please note: This policy will be enforced. Please contact
the ECP department should you wish to change or cancel a
course. Requests to the teachers/coaches are not
valid. Once you hand in your application you automatically
agree to our policy. Courses can only take place if a
minimum number of participants sign up. These numbers
may vary from class to class, therefore we may in some
instances need to cancel a class where numbers are not
reached. Please select your courses carefully. If you (your
child) decide after the very first class that a course is not
suitable for you (him/her), then you must contact the ECP
office immediately to cancel your registration. You will then
incur a cancellation fee of CHF 50. After the first week
you will be responsible for the full cost of the course.
Adult Language classes and one-off events cannot be
cancelled at all.
We regret that missed sessions cannot be reimbursed
except in the case of long-term illness or accident. Please
send a written request to the ECP office.
Important Note: One-off events cannot be cancelled
at all. If you sign-up, you will be billed. In the event you
cannot attend a class, then it is your responsibility to find a
replacement. No-shows will be billed! Please understand
that we too have to make advance commitments for our
events.
PAYMENT FOR ECP ACTIVITIES
Families will generally receive one invoice per programme,
for all registered ECP courses (Supervised Care and Private
tuition may be invoiced individually at an earlier or later
time). These will be mailed to you approx. 2 weeks after
classes start and payment will be due 30 days after invoice
date. Payment can be made through your bank, to our
Coop account. Please ensure your invoice reference number
is quoted at all times.
2
For the 1 st Lesson Only:
Meeting place for those who do not know where to go for
courses taking place onsite in Aesch starting the week
September 20 will be in the cafeteria where ECP staff will be
present. Reinach students should proceed directly to the
assigned location or ask at reception if they are not sure of
where to go. After the first class, the teachers will meet the
students in the assigned gym or classroom. When in doubt,
please inquire with the ECP staff or ask at reception.
*JUNIOR SCHOOL SUPERVISION & COLLECTION:
All PS and KG children will be dismissed from their
classrooms when school lets out, prior to when ECP
activities start. Parents must be present to collect their
children and escort them to their scheduled ECP
activity even if it starts right after school.
For classes starting at 3:20 older students may be able to
make their own way, but we ask that parents escort them at
least the first few times. Please note that parents are
responsible for supervising their own children before and
after ECP classes.
*IMPORTANT: No Junior School child can be left
unsupervised after school without express written
permission from the Junior School Principal.
All parents are required to be present at pick-up time
to collect their children. Coaches will dismiss children
after class and are not in a position to hold children
until a parent arrives or to match each child with a
parent. Please be there to meet your child.
SUPERVISED CARE AFTER SCHOOL
For working parents of children KG-G3 we offer Supervised
Care when school is in session from Mon-Fri until 4:15 (part
session) or 5:15 the latest (full session). Please contact the
ECP dept. for details or refer to the A-Z listing in the
programme. Please note that 17:15 is the latest time
that your child can be picked up.
Certain school activities such as Parent/Teacher Conferences
take priority over ECP events (including tutoring) throughout
the calendar year. Occasionally certain ECP classes
need to be cancelled accordingly.
OFF-SITE LOCATIONS Please make your own way to
classes which take place off-site. Maps can be found at the
back of this programme. Children will not be escorted to
and from these locations. Parents are responsible for
drop-off and pick-up. The ECP office assumes no
responsibility. Stop by the office if you need more details on
how to get to your class/course location.
INSURANCE Each participant is responsible for his/her own
insurance. ISB is not liable for any injuries incurred while
participating in ECP classes. Please ensure your health
insurance policies cover sports injuries!
QUALITY CONTROL We do our utmost to provide you with
professional and reliable instruction. Should you at any time
be dissatisfied with the quality of a course, please do not
hesitate to discuss it with us. We do need your feedback to
ensure high standards.
ATTIRE: PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR CHILDREN WEAR
APPROPRIATE GYM CLOTHES TO ECP SPORTS CLASSES.
BASEL WALK – COLOUR AND ORNAMENT IN
ARCHITECTURE
Tour Guide: Dina Bonefacic-Mihaljek, Architect
Although most buildings in Basel seem rather subdued in
their outward appearance, colour and ornament do play
an important role in local architecture. During this walk
we take a careful look at the interiors of the Muenster
and the Schluesselzunf as well as at the facades of
historic and more modern buildings in order to answer
questions about Basel’s traditional use of colour and the
purpose and meaning of ornament as employed from
medieval times up to the most recent days.
Our tour includes 19 th c. buildings on Freie Strasse, the
Romanesque and Gothic carvings of the Muenster as
well as the once controversial N. Stoecklin mural on the
nearby Mentelinhof. We look at house ornaments on
Schluesselberg and have coffee by the historic tiled
oven in Schlusselzunf. We explore artistic depictions on
the Rathaus and inside the Archives before continuing
to Les Trois Rois and the Totentanzplatz. On
Spitalstrasse we look at Herzog & de Meuron’s Rossetti
building and at the new Kinderspital. The tour ends at
St. Johanns-Tor.
How to Talk so Parents will Listen!
Facilitated by Kirstin Barton*
Parents can be so difficult!
Have you ever felt that no matter how hard you try you
just aren’t being heard?
Communicating can be difficult sometimes and we often
feel that we can’t express ourselves as well as we want to
and how we would like to. Sometimes it can feel as if
we are just not listened to.
This workshop helps you explore more about
communication and gives you the chance to practice
some new approaches in a safe, confidential and fun
environment. Not only will it help you at home, but you
can apply what you learn at school, in interviews and
with friends too!
A great workshop for teenagers who feel that their
parents just don’t listen!
We are excited and delighted to be able in this
programme to offer boys in Grades 7-10 the opportunity
to have a go at learning this popular style of dance.
During the course ‘Tuffkid’* will teach how to perform
each move and take you from your warm-up into the 5
components of break dancing - uprock, drops
(transitions), footwork, freezes and power-moves.
While this class is designed for beginners, it is also for
‘ambitious beginners!’ We want to teach you the
