Virtually all linear openings in buildings are referred to as joints. Although joints are 

found in many areas of construction, clearly they are not all alike. Additionally, test 

methods, test apparatus, and codes can confuse even experienced specifiers, 

installers, or inspectors. As a recognized leader in this area, STI offers more than just

Static vs Dynamic 

The word joint often implies movement. Accordingly, some gaps are created to allow 

expansion and contraction, or compression and deflection of structural members. 

Events such as seismic, wind sway and vertical shear, as well as temperature changes 

are also factors that dictate dynamic joint systems. Conversely, static joint systems 

are designed for openings that will see little to no appreciable movement. In most 

cases, these openings simply represent a line of demarcation between two building 

surfaces or conditions.

from 1/8" (0.125") to 1" are provided. Stated values are for caulking. To 

calculate spray requirements, add actual joint width + overspray to determine 

JOINT WIDTH. For example: actual joint width = 4", overspray = 1" 

on both sides. JOINT WIDTH in table would be 6". For wider joints such as 

8" joints, double the values shown in the 4" JOINT WIDTH estimation.

Product Estimation and Installation 

Series AS Spray Equipment and Estimation 

SpecSeal ® Series AS200 Elastomeric Spray, as compared to paint, is a heavier architectural coating. It is 

designed to be applied at a wet coating thickness of 1/8 in. (0.125 in., 125 mils). At this coating thickness, the 

pump will consume one gallon of coating for every 12.8 sq. ft. Thus, the equipment used to apply it must be 

properly sized and matched in order to provide the required production rate. A few factors are critical in the 

selection of the right spray equipment. 

Pump: The spray pump must be capable of supplying sufficient material to the gun to properly atomize the 

coating when sprayed through a 0.026 in. spray tip (orifice) and provide a continuous spray without excessive 

surging or pausing. The pump will need to be capable of developing 3000 PSI (or more). The flow rate must 

be one gallon per minute (G.P.M.) minimum. 

We recommend a 1 G.P.M. pump or higher in order to satisfy higher production requirements and to allow 

for larger hoses or tip sizes at the higher end of the range. 

A SPRAY UNIT CAPABLE OF SPRAYING BLOCK FILLERS OR OTHER HEAVIER ARCHITECTURAL COATINGS 

SHOULD BE ADEQUATE. 

Tip Size: The tip size may vary from approximately 0.023 in. to 0.026 

in. The smaller tip will allow for spraying at a lower delivery rate which 

may afford the applicator better control in certain applications. 

Moving to the larger size will increase delivery rates but may also 

require a larger pump or shorter fluid lines. Keep in mind that the tip 

will gradually wear and become larger. A reversible tip will help clear 

the occasional clog. 

We recommend that the applicator use a new 0.023 in. to 0.026 in. 

spray tip. If higher production rates are required and the pump can 

support it, the larger tip size may be used. Consult the spray gun 

manufacturer for tips that will produce the desired spray pattern. 

Fluid Lines: The diameter and length of the fluid lines will also effect 

the ability of the pump to supply the tip at an adequate rate. Longer 

hoses and the need to raise the material up from floor level to high ceilings will also be a factor in the pump’s 

ability to supply the gun. 

We Recommend a minimum of 3/8 in. I.D. hose for up to 50 ft. runs and 1/2 in. to 3/4 in. for longer runs. 

NOTE: Pump discharge ports and all fittings must be minimally as large as the hose in order to benefit from 

increasing the hose size.

Specifications 

All data, video, and communications cable bundles shall 

utilize an enclosed fire rated pathway device wherever said 

cables penetrate rated walls. The fire-rated pathway shall 

contain a built-in fire sealing system sufficient to maintain 

the hourly fire rating of the barrier being penetrated. The 

self-contained sealing system shall automatically adjust 

to the installed cable loading and shall permit cables to 

be installed, removed, or retrofitted without the need to 

adjust, remove or reinstall firestop materials. The pathway 

shall be UL ® Classified and/or FM Systems Approved and 

tested to the requirements of ASTM E814 (UL1479).

The Kick-In Floor Kit installs a Series 33 Pathway into a 4 in. (102 mm) core drilled round opening. 

Built-in, self-locking fasteners securely wedge the pathway into the concrete. Installation 

is simple! Insert plate into opening. Insert pathway into plate and tighten set screws. Plate is 

locked in place! No fasteners and no sealant required! 

The Conduit attachment Kit installs a Series 33 Pathway within a 4 in. (102 mm) 

sleeve or conduit. The split plate design allows for installation in both new and existing 

cabling applications.

Retrofit/Repair Wall Kit is a multi-purpose split mounting plate designed to facilitate 

EZ-Path ® installations around previously installed cables or in new or existing cabling 

applications where a large opening or opposing offset openings have been created in 

either gypsum board or masonry block walls. The assembled two-piece plates measuring 

8 in. x 10 in. (203 mm x 254 mm) can be rotated independently of each other in 

90° increments to cover irregular or offset openings. Plates are designed to overlap the 

wall openings on both sides by 1 in. (25 mm) in all directions, permitting fasteners to be 

attached solidly to undamaged, structurally intact wall surfaces.

Series 33 - Accessories 

The extension module attaches to the end of a Series 33 Pathway increasing the effective 

length for thicker barriers. A single extension can be mounted on one end to increase the 

pathway length by 6 in. (152 mm). Extensions can be mounted at both ends to increase 

Pathway length by 12 in. (305 mm). Extensions are designed to work with all other 

accessories.

applications that brings the safety and 

simplicity of EZ-Path ® to your vertical

The EZ-Path Modular Floor Grid System 

can handle literally thousands of cables. 

Modular Floor Grid Systems utilize the 

high volume, EZ-Path 44 Series Pathways 

installed in banks of four to provide your 

cabling systems with room to grow. 

Sturdy steel grids mount one, two or 

four banks of pathways in built-in slots 

for a total of up to sixteen pathways through a single floor opening. A single bank Floor Grid comes complete with

These products are used solely or in combination 

to construct firestop systems effective in 

sealing through-penetrations, construction joints 

and high traffic openings against the spread of 

fire, smoke or hot gasses. A wide range of tested 

systems is available for standard constructions 

and penetrants with ratings up to 4 hours.

COMPOSITION & MATERIALS 

STI Firestop Products are a unique combination 

of passive and intumescent (expands 

when heated) materials. Products utilizing this 

expansion mechanism exhibit unusually fast 

and aggressive, highly directionalized expansion. 

Water Based Sealants 

Series SSS, LCI, LC and ES Sealants are latex 

based, water resistant, flexible sealants. These 

products are available in a multi-viscosity 

grade suitable for caulking, troweling, pumping 

or bulk loading. 

Series SSS is a highly intumescent product 

well-suited for a wide range of combustible 

and noncombustible penetrants 

Series LCI is an intumescent product custom

5. Installation 

PREPARATORY WORK 

Proper adhesion and bonding of all sealants, 

coatings and mortars require that all contact 

surfaces be free of oil, loose dirt, rust or scale. 

Forming materials may be required in some 

cases to retain fill materials and may contribute 

to fire ratings. 

METHODS 

Consult product data sheets for individual 

products for more complete details concerning 

the suggested installation methods and 

limitations of these products. 

Sealants 

Sealants can be applied by troweling, using a 

standard mason’s trowel or a common putty 

knife. Sealants can be caulked in place using 

standard 1/10 gal (0.38 L) caulk tubes or by 

bulk loading guns directly from poly pail. 

Sealant may be pumped or power caulked 

using airless pumps designed for this purpose. 

STI Firestop Products 

Elastomeric Spray 

Coating is applied to construction surfaces 

using high volume, airless spray equipment. 

Consult manufacturer for equipment recommendations 

and full installation instructions. 

Putty 

Standard method of application is by hand 

packing. While bundled cables have been 

successfully fire tested, spacing of cables to 

allow placement of putty into interstices is 

required to ensure a tight smoke seal. 

Mortar 

Mortar can be placed using standard 

mason’s techniques and tools and may be 

pumped using an air operated double 

diaphragm pump or a plastering pump. 

Combustible penetrants can be protected 

using SpecSealª Wrap Strips installed prior to 

placing mortar (consult installation instructions). 

Contact surfaces should be dampened

Firestop pillows are installed by stacking and 

compressing into the opening lengthwise to 

form a 9" (229 mm) thick seal. To better conform 

to cable bundle and completely fill the 

opening, pillows may be installed flat or 

upright on edge. 

Firestop Collars 

Firestop collars are designed to be installed

on the external surface of walls or floors. 

Collars provide appropriate fastening 

method for closure around the pipe. Installer 

provides appropriate fasteners for attaching 

to the wall or floor surface. Collar is required 

at the underside of floors and on both sides of 

walls. 

Wrap Strips 

Wrap strips are designed to be installed by 

manually wrapping around the penetrant 

being protected. In “tuck-in” applications, 

wrap strip is secured to the penetrant using a 

steel tie wire or foil tape. A galvanized sheet 

metal restraining collar is available from the 

manufacturer for surface mounted applications. 

Installation methods have been developed 

for steel deck floors or for sleeved penetrations 

that permit the collars to be installed 

from the top surface of the floor and suspended 

down into the opening. 

28 gauge galvanized steel restraining collar 

is available from the manufacturer in 25' 

(8 m) long rolls for applications up to and 

including 4" (102 mm) plastic pipes. Individually 

sized restraining collars in required heavier 

gauge metals for larger plastic pipes are also 

available.

EZ-Path Fire Rated Pathways 

EZ-Path is designed for easy installation in 

walls. Tested and approved cable capacities 

range from 0 to 100% visual fill. EZ-Path, when 

installed with available wall plates, is designed 

for new cable installations. EZ-Path’s split body 

design also allows the device to be easily disassembled 

and installed around previously 

installed cables in existing construction.

Polymer jacketed cables found in datacom applications are considered to be combustible. 

Combustible penetrants pose a potentially greater risk than noncombustible 

penetrants as they may melt or burn out causing openings to develop within 

a firestop. Intumescent firestop technology (expands with heat) is required to compensate 

for the loss of mass when jackets burn away. Additionally, while some datacom 

firestop installations are permanent, future growth requirements to accommodate 

cable moves, adds, and changes will likely require a retrofittable system. The 

materials and methods selected to seal these penetrations must be chosen with 

these performance requirements in mind.

escutcheon plates.
