Clarke Common names: Small bark tree Vernacular name: Sanskrit : Lodhra, Rodhara Hindi: Lodh Kannada: Baladoddi, Shaabara mara Malayalm: Pachotti Marathi : Lodh, Ldhra Tamil : Vellilottiram, Kacacankai Telugu : Sapara, Lodduga. 2. Botanic description This is a medium sized tree, 10-15 m tall with a large canopy, Branclets glabrous. Leaves alternate elliptic-Oblong, acute-acuminate, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, distinctly stalked. Flowers bisexual, white fragrant, cream coloured, dark green and leathery in axillary raceme, Drupe glabrous, ellipsoid to avoid, dark blue turning yellow when dry, usually 2- celled, endocarp smooth. 3. Ecology and Distribution Globally the species is distributed in the Indo-Malaysian region. In India, it is distributed in the western Peninsula region, North eastern India and Sub- Himalayan Tracts. The tree is found very commonly in the plains and lower hills of Bengal, Assam and Burma. In Karnataka it is found in Belgaum, Chickmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Hassan, Kadagu and 54
