Propagation Protocolo of Premna Inteqrifolia 1. Introduction Current Name: Premna serratifolia L. Family: Verbenaceae Synonyms: P.integrifolia L. Common names: Indian Had ache tree, Agnimantha, arni. Vernacular name: Sanskrit : Agnimanthah, Ganikarica Hindi: Arni Kannada: Thakkile, Eegigida Malayalm: Apple, Ben-moenja Tamil : Minnai, Perumunnai Telugu Gadanelli, Kanika 2. Botanic description A small tree 20-25 ft height with large branches often spinous, Bark is light grey in colour with small spines on it. Branchlets unarmed. Leaves have a peculiar odor on crushing. These turn black on drying. Leaves are 2-7 inches, sub obtuse, very shortly acuminate or obtuse, mature glarous or minutely hairy on the nerves above or beside the nerves beneath. The flower bud is 2 to 5 inch in diameter. Flowers are greenish white in colour. Flowering occurs in April To May. Drupes are spherical, black or violet in colour and has diameter of 2 to 5 inch. Fruiting occurs in May to June. Globose, 3-4 seeded. 3. Ecology & distribution Globally, the species is distributed from the Indo-Malaysian region to Pacific and also in Srilanka. Within India, it is distributed in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In Karnataka, it is found in Uttara Kannada & Dakshina Kannada. 43
4. Agro climatic Requirement It’s a small tree found in coastal scrub jungles. Thrive well on lateritic soils and red soils. 5. Propagation It can be propagated by vegetative means through cuttings: Semi-hardwood cuttings of 15 to 20 cm length are used as planting material. The cuttings are planted in polythene bags or on raised beds. Sprout initiation takes place in about 20 to 25 days & 60 per cent of the cuttings sprout. The sprouted cuttings can be transferred to the field after 3 months. 6. Transplanting & aftercare 6.1 Land preparation Land is prepared by tilling or digging. Spacing of 6 m x 6 m given and 45 3 pits are dug. 6.2 Planting Transplant sprouted cuttings of 3 months age. 6.3 Irrigation & inter cultivation Irrigate frequently in early stage. Duration is widened to 1 week after plants establish well. Frequent irrigation necessary in summer. 6.4 Manures Land may be incorporated with manure of 8-10 tons/acre (FYM). 6.5 Pests and Diseases No serious pest diseases have been noticed in this crop. 7. Commercial Uses 7.1 Medicinal uses Parts used are roots and leaves. Roots are reported to be useful in treating inflammations, cardiac disorders, cough, asthma, bronchitis, leprosy, skin diseases, flatulence, colic, constipation, fever, diabetes and general debility. Leaves are carminative and useful in dyspepsia, flatulence, cough, fever, haemorrhoids and tumours. 44
