Propagation Protocol of Asparagus racemosus 1. Introduction Current Name : Rauvolfia serpentina Benth. Botanic description A much-branched, tall climbing, spinous under-shrub with annual woody terrate stems, and tuberous, short rootstock bearing numerous fusiform, succulent, tuberous roots, Branchlets triquetrous, spines 5-13 mm long recurved or rarely straight, cladoded 1.3-2.5 cm long, in tufts of 2-6 curved. The flowers are white, fragment, solitary of fascicited, simple of branched racemes 2.5-5 cm long, Peicles 5mm long joined in the middle. Perianth about 3 mm long, stamens as long as the perianth. Berry 5 to 6 mm in diameter red, globose or more often obscurely 3 lobed; usually one seed in a berry. White tubers of this plant are available in the market as the market as shatavar. 3. It can be grown in moderate hills like shevroys, Kolli and Kalrayan hills and dedium elevations of western ghat hills under condition where the elevations are between 800 to 1500m above MSL. It tolerates drought as well as low temperature. 5. Propagation Shathavari is commonly propagated through suckers and seeds. For commercial cultivation. Root suckers are preferred over seeds. 5.1. Seed propagation Sowing seeds as well can successfully be practiced. It flowers two to three times every year. Each tricarpellary overy produces only one healthy seed. Seeds can be collected in December-January and can be sown after keeping for about 40 days The raised beds are preferred. Fresh seed gives early germination. The seed should be soacked in water overnight and treated with thiram (at the rate of 3g/kg seeds) before sowing. It should be sown at a distance of 2-3 cm from each other and at a depth of 1.5-3 cm, in shallow furrows, 10-15 cm apart. It was observed in an experiment, that seed treatment with cow urine gives early and better germination percentage compared to soaking in water overnight. They are covered with mixture of farmyard manure and fine soil. The beds should be kept moist by watering. Germination starts after 10-15 days and continues upto 40-45 days of sowing. 6
