Sometimes it is all too easy to become overwhelmed with our hectic 

daily lives and overlook the beauty surrounding us. And this is 

tragic. 

Working on this month’s issue of 573 Homes & Lifestyles gave 

me a chance to step back and really admire some several beautiful 

women working hard to make a difference in Southeast Missouri. Dr. 

Seanica Howe is visionary and kind; Heather Reed is warm, friendly 

and inviting; Monica Birdsong is driven and inspiring; and Carla Cox 

really gives her heart to her clients. We are truly blessed to have such 

wonderful, talented and inspirational members of our community. 

I invite you to take a moment, sit back, and enjoy the contents 

of this magazine. I was thrilled these women allowed me into their 

busy lives and I appreciate the time I was able to spend getting to 

know them. I’m sure you, as a reader, will enjoy getting to know them

Dr. Seanica Howe has a vision. With 

orthodontics practices in both 

Poplar Bluff and South Florida, 

she’s made a mark in both communities by 

providing her clients with excellent service 

and a creative experience in a unique, 

inviting environment. 

Howe is both an artist and a muse. 

Her long dark hair and gentle smile provide 

curtains for her striking eyes, two 

almond-shaped windows into her visionary 

soul. 

“The major difference in our 

practice is that we don’t feel like orthodontics 

have to feel like orthodontics,” 

Howe said. “I strive to give my patients 

a creative experience. Our practice in 

Poplar Bluff is very fun. It feels very 

light and very different.” 

SHA Ortho, Howe’s Poplar Bluff 

practice, reached its one-year anniversary 

on June 9 and is celebrating all 

summer. SHA is known for its unique 

plan and interior concept, both of which 

were custom-designed by Howe. 

The 1993 graduate of Twin Rivers 

High School was born and raised in Qulin. 

She lived with her family on a rural 

dirt road, and describes her experiences 

there as “very positive.” Howe obtained 

her undergraduate degree from Missouri 

State University, attended dental school 

at the University of Missouri in Kansas 

City, and received her orthodontics training 

at Nova Southeastern University in 

Miami, Fla. She’s been practicing orthodontics 

in Miami since founding a firm 

in 2003 and is now senior doctor there, 

serving in a managerial position over 

two other doctors. 

And while rural Missouri lacks 

South Florida’s glitz, glamour and 

white-sand beaches, Howe considers her 

practice here her top priority. “It’s a balancing 

act,” Howe said. Despite making 

monthly trips to Miami, she has achieved 

equilibrium thanks to the full-time staff 

at the Poplar Bluff practice.

“I try not to let the place I’m in determine what I’m going 

to do,” Howe said. 

Howe’s concentration in the Poplar Bluff practice is twofold. 

“First, I want to give something back to the community,” she explained. 

“I want to inspire kids and I want them to know you can do 

anything, no matter where you’re born and raised. Second, it’s about 

creative expression. For me as an artist, this practice is a way for me 

to express myself creatively.” 

And creativity is what drives Howe. While she’s been able 

to find both career and personal success by embracing her visionary 

momentum, her method is simple. “When I feel I can do something 

positive, I go toward it,” Howe said. 

“Orthodontics is an artistic profession,” Howe said. “You’re 

really trying to make people beautiful. To be successful, you have to 

be aware of balance with a person’s face and personality.” 

Howe’s other creative pursuits also include painting, sketching, 

drawing and singing. She began drawing about two years ago 

after tagging along with a friend to a session with a model. 

“I just found this talent,” Howe said. “I don’t know where it 

came from.” 

Family is important to Howe. Her brother owns a Poplar 

Bluff-based insurance company and both her mother and father are 

involved with the business and its operations.

Carla Cox is in the business of helping people. And she 

selflessly enjoys every minute of it. 

Cox isn’t a doctor, a nurse or even a teacher, but for 

many of the people she’s able to assist, she’s a downright saint. 

Cox is assistant manager with the Banner Finance Corporation 

and works at the Poplar Bluff location at 107 South Broadway. 

Banner Finance grants small personal loans, up to 

$900, to qualifying individuals in about 30 minutes. The 

company strives to serve individuals who may or may not be 

able to borrow from a bank and it to be understanding of these 

consumers needs. 

“A lot of the people who come here come with no or 

damaged credit,” Cox explained. “If you’re trying to get your 

credit established or reestablished, we can help.” 

Poplar Bluff’s Banner Finance store is part of a regional 

chain with headquarters in St. Louis. Banner Finance has 

locations in Oklahoma, Texas and Illinois, in addition to several 

Missouri locations. Four people work in the local store 

Cox has been with the company for nine years. Originally 

from Poplar Bluff, she now resides in Ellsinore and is the 

proud mother of two sons ages 14 and 15. 

“The best thing about my job with Banner is the 

people,” Cox said. “In this job you can help people out and we 

do our best to help people who need the money.”

will leave Porky’s hungry.

restaurant three years ago 

in Kennett and have since 

expanded to Poplar Bluff. 

The restaurant is family 

owned and you can tell 

it by how nice and polite 

the staff is once you enter. 

When you walk into Porky’s the front door 

rings the cowbell overhead, and you have pictures 

of Poplar Bluff’s past all along the walls. 

The décor isn’t complete without checking out 

the jukebox. 

For starters we enjoyed an appetizer. The 

fried mushrooms were outstanding, and we 

always appreciate a restaurant with sweet tea. 

We tried the pork steak and it was spot on. It is 

almost bigger than the ample sized plate, and 

the BBQ sauce gave it a great flavor. 

The couple we were with had the ribs and 

spared us a couple….they were great. In fact we 

cleaned ours right to the bone. 

We asked about the sauce and we were told 

it was a family recipe and had won several 

awards. It is not too sweet, just about right.

While the entrée was remarkable 

the sides were just as good. They 

simply have the best potato salad we 

had ever eaten. It is creamy and you 

literally have never tasted anything 

like it. For dessert we ordered some 

peach cobbler, and although we were 

full and shouldn’t have even ordered 

it….we finished it. 

Everyone knows folks in the 573 

love their BBQ, and all those that do 

should definitely put Porky’s on their 

list of must stops soon.

Nestled between businesses in Poplar 

Bluff’s busy Mansion Mall, The Spa’s 

exterior looks rather modest. But 

opening the single glass door sets patrons 

on a path to true relaxation, sending them 

towards both inner peace and outer beauty. 

“We are a skin-based salon,” owner 

Heather Reed said. Heather offers her clients 

a variety of services, and as of September 

1 with the addition of nail tech services, 

will provide everything from mud wraps to 

manicures. 

Heather is all smiles. Her friendly, 

cheerful demeanor quickly puts her clients 

at ease and opens them up to relaxation and 

retreat. 

“I socialize for a living,” Heather said 

with a chuckle. “I’ve never met anyone here 

I didn’t like.” 

Though The Spa has been in business 

since 2006, Heather purchased it two years 

ago. A native of Tampa, Fla., Heather is a 

licensed esthetician, massage therapist and 

nail technician. The Spa’s staff has nearly

According to Heather, the expansive 

menu of options available to clients include 

traditional table massages; ashiatsu massage,

man’s yoga,” according to Heather; prenatal 

massage; couples’ massages; and what 

Heather calls “Pamper Parties,” in which 

Heather closes the spa to accommodate a 

large group of up to ten people. The Spa’s 

offerings will expand even more when 

higher-end nail tech services will be added. 

“Our clients wanted a good, clean 

place to get pedicures,” Heather said. “Our 

philosophy is not that you’re going to come 

in for a manicure of pedicure, it’s simply 

that you’re coming in for an experience and 

you’ll leave with pretty toes.” 

While a majority of the services offered 

at The Spa are based on massage, they 

also offer specialty skin care. 

“We have the area’s only wet room,” 

Heather said. “We offer mud wraps and 

sugar scrubs there.” 

Mud treatments have been used as a 

skin detoxification treatment for hundreds 

of years, and continue to be one of the best 

body treatments for reviving sluggish skin 

and clearing out toxins. Sugar scrubs offer 

intense exfoliation and naturally smooth and 

soften skin. Additionally, chemical peels,

Painting A Brick Fireplace 

Natural brick has its place in the home - in some cases it 

doesn’t - but more frequently, fireplaces end up looking 

dingy after several years of use. In recent years painting 

these fireplaces has become a popular design technique. 

By painting over a brick fireplace, fireplace, you can take a tired 

feature and turn it into a great focal point. It's very simple to 

do, doesn't take a lot of time or money, and will give your 

home an instant, uplifting makeover. If you want to give 

your fireplace a new look but can't afford costly renovations, 

painting is a great option. 

The first decision is to be be absolutely absolutely sure sure that you no no 

longer want the original brick to be visible. Once it's been 

painted it is virtually impossible to remove the paint. Next, 

you'll want to take into consideration the other colors in the 

room, the style of the room, and whether you want the fireplace

order to remove any loose pieces of mortar. Vacuum the area 

all around the fireplace as well since there might be excess 

dust and ash around the base. 

Tape off the areas around the surface to be painted. It's a 

tedious step, but you'll be glad you did it. Be sure to cover 

the floor with drop cloths in case any paint spills or drips. 

If the bricks are really soot-stained, it's a good idea to 

prime them with an oil-based primer. This will prevent any 

soot from bleeding through the paint later. Let it dry completely 

before applying the paint. 

Brick is a very porous material, so it's likely that several

young bowlers competed in 

the youth bowling program. 

The program is set up in 

tiered levels based on age 

and skills and allows young 

bowlers the chance to compete 

in tournaments and 

for prizes including awards, 

scholarships and of course, 

bragging rights. 

“In the ten years I’ve 

been coaching, 

we’ve 

had at least 

11 teams to 

go the state 

tournament 

each year,” 

Mrs. Elliot 

said. “It’s 

definitely 

something 

for the kids to look forward 

to.”

Defined by its close proximity to the Black River, South 

Poplar Bluff is home to an assortment of bustling businesses

known for its thriving timber trade, is now famous for its

Westwood Boulevard 

and Highway 53 started taking

Subrina J. Berger, marketing and box office manager at 

the Black River Coliseum, is ecstatic about the community 

center’s placement and location. 

“We have a beautiful view of the river and the downtown 

area. We get to hear the trains rumble as the go by, which 

is a present reminder of Poplar Bluff’s history,” Berger 

said. “This location is accessible to everyone in the area.” 

Jason Worley, who grew up on the Southside near 53 

Highway, remembers his formative years there fondly. 

Worley attended Eugene Field Elementary School in the 

early 1980s. 

“I loved the fast-pitch softball games at Whitely Park,” 

Worley said. “My parents gave us free range, so my 

friends I would ride our bikes to Heinz Grocery, Rushins 

Grocery and Kasey’s 

General Store for candy. 

One of the best things 

about growing up in 

South Poplar Bluff is 

that there were so many 

different types of people 

there. You grow up with 

a little higher tolerance 

for those with different 

situations.” 

Angela Towner, whose 

family owns Towner’s Automotive at 450 Highway 53, 

loves their new location on the Southside and has enjoyed 

seeing the area grow. 

“We have more room to work on vehicles and store them, 

our own office, no more hassle with the gas station,” 

Towner said. “We are on our own now and just started 

doing UHAULS. Larry is a skilled mechanic with dealership 

experience.” 

Bluff Falls manager Karen Blocker is also excited about 

progress in South Poplar Bluff. Bluff Falls has been on 

the Southside for 

about eight years 

and has seen the 

area develop. 

“I’m glad the park 

is down here and 

I hope we’ve set a 

trend for even more 

growth,” Blocker 

said.
