NOT INTENDED TO SOLICIT PROPERTIES ALREADY UNDER CONTRACT
In 1998, the
Karpenkos set
themselves a
10 year plan,
to have a new
cottage/future
retirement home
on the lake.
Their Dream Becomes Reality
Cottage life began for Allen and Debbie Karpenko,
in 1997, on a small land locked lake now known as White
Lake. They knew that if they didn’t get into the cottage market
then, it would soon be out of their reach. They purchased
a small, seasonal cottage with 50’ frontage. They looked forward
to each weekend and didn’t miss many in the four years
they were there. The fall always came with sadness. They
soon realized they wanted a four-season cottage on the
Trent.
In 1998, the Karpenkos set themselves a 10 year plan, to
have a new cottage/future retirement home on the lake. They
realized that in order to have the funds to buy a better cottage,
they would need to downsize their home. In 2000, they
purchased a new townhouse in the planning stages and
moved in six months later. Even before the boxes were
unpacked, they were on the Internet searching out cottage
properties.
They found one they were intrigued with, so before that
February weekend was over, they had listed their old cottage
with a realtor. Just a few weeks later, they had a buyer! They
found a larger four-season cottage the same weekend and
closed the deal on both cottages in early June 2001.
The cottage had a great view, 90’ frontage on Lower
Buckhorn Lake, an excellent location and promised the
COTTAGE CONSTRUCTION
potential for renovating into a full time residence. The cottage
needed some work and the yard needed a lot of clean up. The
kitchen was small. Gradually improvements were made. They
knew that it was time to seriously begin their renovation plans
when their deck needed to be replaced, and they couldn’t stand
their living room/kitchen floor another minute. They didn’t want
to do any work that would ultimately have to be redone.
Over the years they had talked with a
few contractors, visited construction
sites and obtained prices. Prices escalated,
as their wish list grew. In 2004,
they had a set of plans drawn up to have
the cottage raised and moved over to
accommodate a walk-out basement, a
breezeway extension and a new garage.
They then took their plans to three contractors
and determined that the cost
was fairly consistent. It was
Countryside Homes out of Bobcaygeon
that won out. Their decision was based
on several conversations with the
builder, talking with past clients, visiting
job sites and seeing that they built a
quality product. They also had a good
‘gut’ feeling.
In the planning stages of construction,
it was their builder that expressed
concern over their decision to renovate,
rather than rebuild. He pointed out that
they only had 900 sq. ft. of useable living
space, which the project would not
address. The couple’s intention to
expand the kitchen later, would significantly
add to the total financial outlay.
New construction had never factored
into the Karpenko’s plans at all. They
kept an open mind, however, and asked
to see the sort of plan he could build on
their property, for the dollar figure he
mentioned. Well that was history. They
liked the plan, made some modifications
and went to blueprint. The investment
in the renovation plans was about
$800.00, chalked up to experience and
a small mistake which they didn’t want
to multiply.
The construction was scheduled to
start after Labour Day in 2005, with a
contract drawn up by the builder and a
deposit paid. Word got around that their
old building was for sale and within a
couple of weeks they had a buyer. They
sealed the deal with a contract that
Debbie drafted up to protect themselves
against liability, warranties and
delays.
In preparing the cottage for the move,
timing was everything. They needed to
continue to use it until the final
moments on a Sunday afternoon in
August. To prepare the cottage, the
crawl space had to be emptied. All the
furnishings had to be taken to storage
and anything that would freeze had to be
packed to take home. Another old shed
was removed and all the debris was
taken to the dump. Finally, all the decking
had to be removed.
Once the cottage building was
removed, there was more work. A few
trees had to be taken down and the old
cinder blocks and insulation from the
crawl space had to be cleared away. The
newest cabin needed to be rotated to
accommodate the new building.
Construction started early in
September and they drove up every
weekend to inspect the progress.
Neighbours were very impressed with
the quality of the workmanship and the
speed of the project. The Karpenkos
never felt uneasy that they weren’t available
during the week to oversee the project.
They met with the builder regularly,
to discuss decisions and any concerns.
The home was ready for cottage life
to begin again, just six short months
later, in March 2006. It was better than
home! Oh, how difficult it was to leave
on Sunday night!
The old cottage, which was moved to
a lot nearby, is now home to a young
family. Allen and Debbie felt proud that
they had done their part in diverting
waste from the landfill and seeing
someone else enjoy their old cottage.
Just eight years after setting their 10
year plan to have a future retirement
home on the lake, the Karpenko’s
exceeded their goal. In September 2006,
they sold their home in the city and
moved up to the lake full time.
Their new home is a raised bungalow,
R2000 certified, which means that it is
as energy efficient as possible. They
have about 1150 sq. ft. on the main
floor, which consists of the master bedroom,
main washroom, laundry room
and large great room and kitchen. They
wanted a house that would see them
well into their old age, so all the essentials
to everyday living is on one floor.
The basement has two guest bedrooms
and a bathroom, (a great feature for
giving guests and homeowners their
own privacy) large rec room (which
was finished by Allen) and a utility
room. They have 9’ ceilings on both
levels. The basement with large windows
and double french doors to the
lake doesn’t feel like a basement. They
have a propane fireplace on the main
floor and a wood burning one in the
basement.
They are quite settled in their life in
Buckhorn, and Allen has a short commute
to Peterborough to work. They
also love not having the weekly commute
to paradise since they are living it
everyday of the year!
SOLAR ENERGY
Solar Energy at
the Cottage
Where Ecology and Economy Meet!!
There’s never been a better time to consider
taking advantage of Solar Energy at the cottage. While
socially and environmentally-conscious Canadians have
long considered the devastating consequences of reliance
on highly-polluting fossil fuels, the up-front costs of
renewable energy systems have been a major impediment
to change. Today, with a combination of rapidly rising
fuel and electricity costs and renewable energy incentives
from various levels of government, Solar
Energy systems make increasingly sound financial
sense.
Solar Energy is a clean and abundant energy
resource that can meet two distinct cottage
applications: generating electricity (photovoltaic)
and heating water (solar-thermal).
About Photovoltaic:
Photovoltaic systems have no moving parts and
should last indefinitely. There are two basic system
types: grid-tied and independent. A gridtied
system consists of solar panels and an
inverter that converts the direct current (DC)
produced by the panels into alternating current
(AC) that can be used in the house or be fed
back into the utility grid. This system may have
a battery back-up.
An independent system, often referred to as
"off the grid", is designed for self-reliant living
and provides most or all of the electricity that
you need. These systems are more common in
rural or recreational locations where utility connections
are expensive or unavailable. These
systems always include batteries for nighttime
and cloudy weather.
Continued on page 15
Heading out to an
installation
Why is it, with so
much Solar Energy
striking the earth each
day, that there are not
more people taking
advantage of the
Sun’s rays to generate
electricity and heat?
Kawartha Cottage Magazine Spring 2009 13

In cottage applications,
systems often require less
power generation (solar panels)
and more power storage
(batteries), allowing for peak
usage on weekends.
Sizing requirements are different for
off-the-grid and grid-tied systems.
Cottagers are often all too familiar with
"dirty" or intermittent power ("Dirty"
power has variable line voltage and frequency).
As a back-up system, a small
grid-tied PV array can be a lifesaver.
Alternatively, cottage owners can take
maximum advantage of exposure to the
sun and install a grid-tied system that
will increase their property’s value and
generate substantial profit. Under
Ontario’s new "Feed-in-Tariff" program,
the Ontario Power Authority will
contract to purchase your Solar Power
at a guaranteed rate of 80.2 cents/KWh.
In most cases, this will amount to a rate
of return on investment of approximately
10%/year!
For the off-the-grid cottage, a Solar
Power system allows for consistent reliable
electricity and freedom from noisy
and polluting generators. The batteries
used in modern systems can be safely
placed inside cottages (no out-gassing
or leaks) and left in place year-round
(high resistance to freezing). Off-thegrid
systems are designed, by necessity,
to meet all electrical demands. In cottage
applications, systems often require
less power generation (solar panels)
and more power storage (batteries),
allowing for peak usage on weekends.
Off-the-grid systems should always be
very carefully sized to meet power
needs, to minimize front-end costs and
avoid unused power being wasted.
The most common
application of Solar
Thermal technology in
cottage applications is
for heating water.
to harvest, store, and distribute heat
from the Sun. Solar Thermal is the
most cost-effective way to use the Sun’s
energy. The most common application
of Solar Thermal technology in cottage
applications is for heating water. It is
estimated that water heating accounts
for anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3 of the typical
home’s energy usage. In cottages,
where other energy use is often minimal,
maintaining hot water may
account for half of energy costs!
Solar Water Heaters fall into two categories:
year-round and seasonal.
While there are many possible designs
for Solar Water Heaters, they consist in
general of three main components: a
Solar Collector (converts solar radiation
into useable heat), a Heat
Exchanger/Pump (transfers heat from the
collector into the potable water), and a
Storage Tank (stores solar heated water).
Year-round systems are designed to
operate reliably through the entire year,
in all extremes of weather. These systems
are generally more expensive than
seasonal systems, and usually provide
more energy savings. Year-round Solar
Water heating systems are eligible for
substantial grants under the Federal
government’s EcoEnergy program and
for Ontario Retail Sales Tax rebates.
Seasonal Solar Water Heaters are
designed to operate only when outdoor
temperatures are above freezing.
Compared to year-round systems, these
systems tend to be less expensive since
they do not include the additional
freeze protection equipment. Seasonal
systems are ideal for cottagers who go
through a full shut-down in the fall.
An added benefit of both year-round
and seasonal water heating systems is
the ability to "dump" any excess heat
generated to other applications such as air
heating, radiant floor heating, or hot tubs
and spas – further reducing energy costs!
Seek Professional Assistance:
When considering Photovoltaic and
Solar Thermal systems, always consult
with licensed and certified system
designers/installers. Be wary of anyone
attempting to sell "off-the-shelf" or "doit-yourself"
packages. In most cases, a
reputable Alternative Energy company
will design and install a professionally
engineered, need-specific system, for
less than the average consumer would
pay for the components at retail.
Additionally, the property owner may
discover that their site has strong potential
for other renewable energy systems
such as: ground or water source heat
(geothermal), wind power generation,
or micro-hydro.
Economical and Sustainable:
Why is it, with so much Solar Energy
striking the earth each day, that there
are not more people taking advantage of
the Sun’s rays to generate electricity
and heat? The answer is likely a combination
of readily available and relatively
cheap fossil fuels, and the higher
infrastructure costs of renewable energy
systems. Fortunately, as the economic
and environmental costs of traditional
fuels have risen so too have the incentives
offered by the Provincial and
Federal governments to convert to more
sustainable power.
Today, renewable energy systems are
more cost-effective and practical than
ever. Thinking about where to start?
Consider solar energy at the cottage:
where ecology and economy meet!!
COTTAGE LANDSCAPING
Finding Harmony with
Nature and Your Cottage
How do you imbue a harmonious ambience to
a lackluster cottage landscape? The outdoor environment is
a natural extension of any cottage lifestyle. Published statistics
reveal that good landscape design is imperative, not
only to increasing the value of your property, but a chance
to experience a whole other part of your cottage – its landscape.
An important thing to consider before undertaking a
landscape project is to devise an integrated plan that is consistent
with the local terrain, the seasons and your budget.
Incorporating harmonious elements such as ground covers,
patios and decks, introducing lighting and rocks to any
scenery is the first stepping stone to achieving your imagined
sanctuary.
Gardens are a primary focal point. Among adding considerable
appeal to any property, gardens grant beauty, colour,
and fragrance that when combined invoke a tranquil wellbeing.
Gardening is like a science- as we discovered from
father- daughter team, Ted and Melissa Spearing of Ground
Covers Unlimited. "You have to consider the site’s challenges,
the plant’s needs, height, texture, colour, and even
the seasons," explains Ted, "no matter what you are planning
on growing you need the right soil conditions to cooperate."
Located in Bethany, Ground Covers Unlimited is
So often, we think of a traditional landscape consisting of trees, grass, shrubs and
plants. However, since the beginning of time, rocks remain an intriguing dimensional
beauty to our natural environment and cover a variety of forms and functions.
Ontario’s landscaping source for ornamental and native covers.
The family’s primary business is focused on growing a group
of plants that by their nature, multiply themselves "vegetatively"
to form patches of solid, low-lying perennial plants.
According to their business activity, a greater appreciation and
demand to cultivate all native plants and trees is increasing.
Many ornamental plants and trees are not cold-hardy
enough for more northerly or exposed locations, where most
native trees would do just fine. They have an amazing selection
of native and cold-hardy ground covers, the most popular
species being Vinca minor, Daylilies (latin name
Hemerocallis), rock garden plants like Thyme and Sedums, as
well as climbing plants like Ivy (latin name Hedera). "Live
roofs are becoming more popular as a means to save
heating/cooling costs and better mitigate rainfall around buildings;
Sedums are perfect for that because they are desert
plants, are very drought-tolerant once established and absorb
water when it does rain," states Ted.
Vinca is a great grass replacement due to its ability to toler-
ate a wide range of soils and deep shade; it does not require
cutting and stays green all year long.
Daylilies are tough plants, thriving in poor soils and many
old varieties are very showy and reliable repeat bloomers from
June until October: 'Crimson Pirate', 'Stella D'Oro', 'Pardon
Me', 'Happy Returns', 'Lemon' and 'Fairytale Pink' to name a
few favourites. For deeper shade areas, Hostas are a landscape
standard and require little maintenance.
Native plants that are increasingly used by landscapers and
designers include Gaultheria procumbens (common name
Wintergreen, as used in toothpaste), Cornus canadensis
(ground cover form of the native flowering shrubs), ferns
(Berry Bladder, Maidenhair, Lady Fern and the only evergreen
Christmas fern), and Arctostaphylos (common name
Bearberry, hardy cottage country ground cover thriving on the
poorest soils, rock outcrops, beautiful red winter foliage).
Native Violas are also used in naturalized plantings, where
they can spread in pockets by self-seeding every spring.
Native trees are beautiful in their genetic variations and
offer long-lived ecological benefits to other floral and fauna around them; fruits,
nuts, seeds, foliage can be food sources for many birds and animals. Melissa
described a new production method that uses root pruning post to generate a fibrous,
non-circling root system. "We hope to educate and encourage more people to use
native trees and this new production system as it is high survivability mixed with
affordability."
Groundcovers not only solve problems, create various moods, but they also unify
different components in the landscape. Non-spreading types of groundcovers can be
used as hedging material, traffic barriers or just visual guides toward an entry. They
soften hardscapes such as walks, steps, and driveways. Ground covers are worth
considering for areas where grass is not desired, where other ornamentals have trouble
establishing, in poor or disturbed soils and in areas where natural spreading can
occur. Melissa confirmed that "many ground covers are incorrectly thought to be
‘invasive’ but that is only by definition of the kind of gardener you are." Gardens
require equal parts artistic vision, horticultural know-how and enduring patience
because you can’t landscape everything at once. Gardens evolve with their owners,
so refine the property one section at a time.
So often, we think of a traditional landscape consisting of trees, grass, shrubs and
plants. However, since the beginning of time, rocks remain an intriguing dimensional
beauty to our natural environment and cover a variety of forms and functions.
There is a multiplicity of sizes, shapes, colours, and textures to fit any design.
Flagstones for instance, provide visual interest, from indicating paths in the garden
to bordering flower beds and bushes. Everything from large boulders to pea gravel
is becoming an affordable and creative way to add a striking ambience .In the over-
all scheme, the basic principle to applying
rocks is making sure that they fit in
with the setting. Plants to use in rock
gardening include moss, lichens and
ferns.
The most common features in landscaping
for cottages are patios and
decks. These spaces are "outdoor
room" extensions of your cottage and
create a more welcoming haven that is
perfect for hosting family gatherings,
cooking, entertaining and relaxing.
The vast array of outdoor kitchens and
furnishings are easily available and
very affordable. Gazebos, fountains,
garden ponds, fire pits, hot tubs and
even installing a swimming pool add
value to your property.
Who says that your experience is
limited to the day? Complement your
outdoor living space with the radiance
of lighting. Many models are now solar
powered and can vividly illuminate the
pathways or entrance, in addition to
accenting focal points of your oasis.
Couple that with some unobtrusive landscape
speakers playing your favourite
sounds will not only enhance a relaxed
atmosphere, but set the perfect mood!
Why use a Professional Landscape
Contractor?
Just as you rely on your dentist or
mechanic to fix technical issues, so
should you enlist the services of a professional
landscape contractor. As Ted
and Melissa revealed, many new homes
or renovations projects are undertaken
without consideration to how the soil
and water resources are managed during
construction, often leaving little or no
basic necessities for healthy plant
growth. Changes to waterways can leave
some plants too wet, some too dry, but
an expert can devise the best suited
drainage and automatic irrigation system
to mitigate this problem. Landscape
contractors can also assist in choosing
the right kinds of plants for your specific
site by identifying the right place
(sun, shade, clay, sand, north, south, hill,
valley) where they will thrive. The best
resource for sourcing local professional
is through the professional association
Landscape Ontario (www.landscapeontario.com).
It’s easy to get overwhelmed with
everything you would like to do, perhaps
spread the enhancements over a couple
of years. Ongoing maintenance, pruning,
pest/disease identification and remedy,
integration with stone work, retaining
walls or slope changes can all be
handled by a professional landscaper,
leaving you with only the time to relax
and enjoy nature’s splendour.
Planning to Build?
Often families dream for many years about
the perfect home. When it comes time to actually build, planning
your new home can be a daunting task. If a log home is
part of your dream, 1867 Confederation Log Homes can make
the design process an enjoyable experience.
"We offer regular educational seminars about the building
process at our Head Office in Bobcaygeon." says owner Rick
Kinsmen. "Foundations, choosing a contractor, budget, design,
finishing and financing are all covered. Participants are also
given an in-depth tour of our shop. We pre-build all our homes
in our indoor shop prior to shipping so you are able to see the
actual process of how the logs fit together with our unique system."
Mark Dunn is Director of Business Development for 1867
Confederation Log Homes and travels throughout North
American speaking to prospective log home owners. "There are
three key elements involved in the design of a home", he states.
1. Choose Your Lot – Typically, many homeowners have
already purchased the land for their new log home. Whether
you are building your home in a suburban development,
high in the mountains or beside a lake, you will almost
always need to choose the land before you select floor plans
or other details. You will want to maximize the potential of
the building site and observe the
direction of the sun, the placement
of trees, and the location of the best
views. You will also need to consider
factors such as soil condition,
drainage, zoning and building codes
in the region.
2. Plan Your Budget – Begin now to
think about how much you can
afford to spend and how much building
your new home is likely to cost.
Chances are you will need a construction
loan and a mortgage. It's
not too early to find out what size
loan you qualify for. Also, knowing
the approximate costs will help you
modify your building plans to meet
your budget.
3. Line Up Your Team – You will be
working with a team of experts to
design and construct your house. Part
of getting started is feeling comfortable
and confident in your log home
manufacturer. 1867 Confederation
Log Homes has been helping families
the world over realize their special
dream for many decades.
"We’re celebrating our 30th year in
business in 2009" explained Kinsman.
"Over the years we’ve achieved many
significant milestones, the most recent
one as the first log home in Canada to
achieve an Energy Star rating. We have
an international clientele, but we’re a
family oriented business and we still
give every homeowner detailed service."
Whether you select an existing plan,
modify it, or create something brand
new, the design team at 1867
Confederation Log Homes will work
with you from start to finish to fulfill
your desires.
The Hamilton-Piercy family agrees:
" The team at 1867 Confederation Log
Homes seemed to read our minds as to
exactly what we need to customize a
design to fit our dream."

Kitchen Considerations
Why don’t we have a
dishwasher at the cottage?
Good question.
YOUR COTTAGE KITCHEN
Greetings fellow cottagers! It’s that time of year again;
time to get back to the cottage and enjoy that laid back life style so often
missing in our busy day to day routines. Cottage kitchens should do their part
in supporting this wonderful lifestyle. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.
The last thing we want is to be left behind drying the dishes while the party carries
on down at the dock without us. "Why don’t we have a dishwasher at the
cottage?" Good question.
Over the past 25 years as kitchen designers, we have seen cottage kitchens
evolve from old, worn out set ups with
little or no thought of function into
beautifully designed kitchens with all
the amenities needed to make meal
prep and clean up a snap. In addition,
they should look spectacular.
But how is this combination of form
and function possible? As with most
things in life, consulting an expert is
always a good idea. Before you make
that call, take a second to organize your
thoughts by making a wish list. It helps
to prioritize your list starting with the
most desired items and working on
down from there. When you are considering
your budget remember to
include things like flooring, painting
and new appliances as well as the new
cabinetry.
Now you are ready to go see an experienced
kitchen designer, but which
one? Here are some suggestions:
• choose someone close to your cottage.
You will find the pre and post sale
service better, plus it feels good to
support the local economy.
• ask your friends who they used, did it
go well and were they pleased with
the end results.
• ask local contractors or tradespersons
who they’d recommend.
Good or bad, our reputation precedes
all of us, so do a little research of the
backgrounds and check references of
any designer or company you are considering
for your project. Quality of
work and pleasant people to deal with
are important considerations also.
Our job is to look after all of the
details for you, to make the process,
dare we say it, easy. When it comes to
cottage life, "Easy" is a good thing.
Enjoy. Charles Harwood
Cuppy Family’s Dream
Cottage Becomes a Reality
Lindsay based, Integrity
Construction Services
Inc. took “care of
everything”.
By Joanne Culley
34 Kawartha Cottage Magazine Spring 2009
Steve Cuppy says his white pine timber frame home blends in beautifully with the surrounding
forest on Catchacoma Lake in the Kawartha region.
"The tall vertical pine really fits in aesthetically with the landscape," he says. He and his
wife Cindy recently replaced their old cottage with a new timber frame home, built by
Integrity Construction Services.
"We used to close up our previous cottage in the fall, as it was not winterized," he continues.
"Our new home is four-season - we’re looking forward to being in it all year round. Since
it was completed in January, we’ve already been up there most weekends."
The Cuppys’ new home is a 2,200 sq. ft., energy-efficient home with a screened porch and
deck. The light-filled interior boasts many windows that overlook the lake. A 30-foot cathedral
ceiling graces the great room with its stone fireplace. A second floor loft overlooks the
kitchen, dining and living room areas.
"We wanted our home to be more comfortable. As we get older we plan on spending more
time there, perhaps even retiring there," Cuppy continues. They used to avoid the bug season
"We want our homes to use
as little energy as possible.
We encourage our clients to
consider things such as
in-floor radiant heating
and/or geo-thermal
applications”
Robert Barrow,
Integrity Construction Services Inc.
in May and June, but now with their
large screened porch, they can enjoy
those months in comfort.
Drinking water used to be a concern,
and the Cuppys had thought about drilling
a well. But Integrity installed a UV light
filter system, so that water can be drawn
and filtered directly from the lake.
Before deciding on Integrity, the
Cuppys looked at their track record.
"They have built homes in Colorado,
as well as in our area, and we were very
impressed," continues Cuppy. "Our lot
was quite a challenge – it is long, but
not very wide. The guys at Integrity are
professionals, they lined up all the
trades - they took care of everything. I
would recommend them highly."
Design/Build Company
Based in Lindsay, Integrity Construction
Services Inc. has been in business for four
years, with registered, certified in-house
designers, carpenters and construction
managers. Their team is experienced in
conventional frame construction, with
significant expertise in specialty areas
such as log, timber frame, structural
insulated panels (SIP), insulated concrete
form (ICF) and newly emerging
hybrid construction methodologies.
Integrity Construction Services
designs and builds custom executive
homes and cottages, throughout central
Ontario ranging from Haliburton and Muskoka,
south to Lake Ontario and North Kawarthas,
and as far west as Hockley Valley.
"We are a Design-Build firm specializing
in whole home solutions," says
Robert Barrow, one of the firm’s
Principals and Construction Manager.
"We build high-quality timber frame and
log homes made of pine or fir, which last
longer, cost less to operate and maintain,
and provide greater homeowner satisfaction
than anything else on the market".
Energy Efficiency
Integrity’s executive retreats, usually built
in and around lakes, are typically constructed
using a ‘green’ approach, which
places a high priority on health, environmental
and resource conservation performance
over its life-cycle.
"We are committed to energy-efficient
construction and being stewards of the
environment. We like to use newly emerging
technologies whenever we can," continues
Barrow. "We want our homes to
use as little energy as possible. We
encourage our clients to consider things
such as in-floor radiant heating and/or
geo-thermal applications. We like to tell
COTTAGE TIPS
Choosing Which
Boat Dock To Buy
Finding the right boat dock can be a challenge. The dock that
you choose has to meet your needs, be within your budget,
and work well with your boat.
Our docks are maintenance free which allows you more
recreation time. We make them as light as possible so that it
is simple for 2 people to remove or install.
Important tip:
If your water level fluctuates more that 12" over the season, a
floating dock may be more practical than a fixed-leg dock.
Call today and talk to one of our "Dock-tors".
How To Fight The Bite
How to apply insect repellents:
• When using on children always apply it for them.
• Apply products lightly, sprays are better than lotions and
can be applied to clothing
• Do not apply to children’s hands; to keep the repellent out
of the eyes and mouth
• Wash skin with soap and water when protection is not needed.
Usage based on age:
• Under 6 months – Do not use products containing DEET
• 6 mos - 2 yrs – 10% DEET or less is okay once per day
• 2-12 yrs – 10% DEET or less maximum 3 times per day
• 12-adult – 30% DEET or less and reapply as needed
Heating systems can include anything
from traditional wood-burning
Rumford-style open hearth fireplaces,
to high-efficiency furnaces, geo-thermal
systems or radiant heat with
hydronic tubing imbedded in the basement
which Barrow says is more comfortable
and quieter than forced air heating.
Sophisticated, informed buyers who
have done their homework prefer these
high quality features in their homes.
"Close teamwork throughout the
design process, openness to new
how these are best applied are often
more important in terms of initial budget
tastes, needs and budget.
The process of having a new home
built begins with a free consultation,
followed by Phase 1 of pre-construction,
where preliminary designs and
budgets are prepared, taking into
account the client’s wish list. Phase 2
involves preparing the permit drawings,
firming up bids, selecting finishes, and
making the decisions necessary in order
to move forward to the construction
phase. Phase 3 is the actual construction,
which usually takes between 8 and
14 months depending on the complexity
of the design and challenges or
remoteness of the site.
When asked why their group chose
the name Integrity, Barrow says,
"Integrity is our core value, which is
what we aspire to in every way, ensuring
quality, ethics, health and safety in
all that we do. Our innovative approach
and collaborative team effort continually
Doing it Right with a
RenoMark Contractor
Whether you’re adding an addition on to your
cottage, or planning a full-scale renovation, it’s important to
have it done right. Hiring a contractor who is a member of the
RenoMark program takes the guesswork out of the decisionmaking.
That seal is the renovators’ mark of excellence and is
a good indication that the company is professional and reliable.
"Cottage or homeowners can be assured that they are dealing
with a reputable renovator if they see the RenoMark
logo," says Scott Wootton, president of Kawartha Lakes
Construction. "Clents can expect professional service, prompt
response time, a well-documented contract for the work and an
enhanced two-year warranty. Renovators who have joined
RenoMark are well-seasoned professionals who know the
importance of doing things right and servicing what they sell.
The confidence that this brings to the consumer is considerable
in these tougher economic times when fly-by-nighters try
their hand as renovators."
With over fifty years in the industry, the Peterborough and
Kawarthas Home Builders Association (PKHBA) has
endorsed the RenoMark program to communicate the high
quality of their members. Companies with this logo have met
a stringent set of criteria. RenoMark is a national program
that originated with the Greater Toronto Home Builders, then
spread to B.C, Alberta, Nova Scotia and is being adopted
RENOVATIONS
across Canada as the mark of professionalism.
Here are some reasons for hiring a RenoMark renovator:
1. RenoMark members believe in professionalism. They are
committed to their industry and are willing to pay annual
dues to keep informed and to help educate consumers.
THIS SUMMER
Visit Our Kawartha
Art Galleries
The best of cottage summers are the days spent lazing
around. Sitting on the dock, watching the kids in the water
at the beach, puttering around with the boats. Summertime
is about barbecues and sitting around with friends –
taking it easy. There is much to see in the Kawarthas on
those days when you want to. If it is a cloudy day, or,
perish the thought, rainy, or when it is just too hot to be outside,
an art gallery tour might just be the ticket.
There are many in our area. From the extraordinary collection
at the Gallery on The Lake to the Art Gallery of
Peterborough, downtown on Little Lake, the work of local
and nationally-known artists is on display for us to see.
A HELPING HAND
For Your Handyman Needs
"We do the work for you, while you
enjoy yourself," says Craig
McCracken, owner of Helping Hand
Handyman Services. "Cottage owners
are often hard-working professionals
who escape to the cottage to relax, or
enjoy the recreation, not to spend their
time on maintenance or improvements."
Helping Hand specializes in painting,
staining, renovations, lawn care
and landscaping, tree pruning and
removal, plumbing, home staging, carpentry,
yard and garage clean-up,
garbage removal, house and window
cleaning and more. They do it all and
they do it with care, cleaning up after
the work.
"Customer service is everything
with us, we have to earn that return call
and referral," continues McCracken.
"After every job, we do a follow-up
call, to make sure the customer is satisfied
with our work in every aspect."
Helping Hand Handyman Services
provides many services for cottage
owners, such as dock installation and
removal, building wooden docks, and
cottage maintenance. They also do
year-round cottage security and maintenance,
checking on your cottage
when you’re not there. Regular checks
can keep small problems from becoming
disasters. For example, a wind
storm may cause a branch to break a
window. Not a huge deal but if left
unchecked, the elements and wildlife
will invade your home through the broken
window, causing extreme damage.
"It is also a security issue" comments
McCracken, "Regular visits show that
the property is not abandoned and IS
being monitored."
They specialize in readying a house
or cottage for sale, often referred to as
home staging. They are a "one-stop
shop" – they can remove that dead tree
in the backyard, change the faucets,
paint that purple room a more neutral
colour, fix that cracked ceiling, and
take the excess garbage to the dump,
resulting in a faster sale at a higher
price.
McCracken is also an experienced
fine art handler and hanger. He has
moved and hung Picassos, so he knows
how to treat your artwork with care.
The locally owned and operated
business serves Peterborough and all
the surrounding area, including
Lakefield, Buckhorn, Bridgenorth,
Ennismore, Bobcaygeon, Apsley,
Stoney Lake and beyond.
Stoney Lake Juniper Island Art
Festival Celebrates 18 Years
This is now the eighteenth year for the Juniper Island
Art Festival, a one of a kind show, held on Stony Lake. The dates
to mark on the calendar are Saturday, August 8 and Sunday August
9. The Opening reception on the Saturday, runs from 4:00 pm to
7:00 pm. with wine & hors d‘oeuvres. This event is one of the
social highlights for the cottagers. Viewing & sales continue on
Sunday from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm.
This amazing exhibition & sale of art and photography has
flourished due to the dedi-cation of a group of volunteers working
from January to August, to plan & set up a display of artwork, produced
by lake artists - both professional and amateur.
The Association of Stony Lake Cottagers (ASLC) is the major
sponsor of this event and the artist fees & donations go towards
supporting many of the ASLC projects. This exhibition would not
go on without the 50 artists & photographers who work to produce
original artwork for the show; artwork that has been produced in
the last two years, but never before displayed at the Festival. The
art exhibited covers all mediums -watercolour, acrylic, oil, sculptures
& photography; in contemporary and realistic styles.
The juried art is hung in the Juniper Island pavilion, while photography
is displayed in the Stony Lake Yacht Club. The Festival
also supports the next generation of artists with an exhibition of
children’s art, displayed in the main building’s library.
Access to the island is by watercraft only and Viamede Resort
offers a shuttle service to and from the resort for $10 each way.
The Resort must be contacted directly to arrange this service and
a 24 hour notice is requested. The contact person is Rob Stinson
(at the Marina) at 705-654-3344 - daytime or 705-748-8441 - cell
- after hours.
For further information please contact the curator of the show,
Heather Collins, who can be reached at 705-654-4348 (summer)
or 705-876-1450 (winter).
THIS SUMMER
52 Kawartha Cottage Magazine Spring 2009
Summer at the cottage – lazy hours on the boat or
lying on the beach. The slower pace, the absence of stress,
the joy of a holiday.
But wait! We don’t want to be entirely out of touch,
do we?
Our reliance on the wide variety of internet services
may only be a few years old, but it is something many of
us would rather not do without. Email and text messaging
are things we now take for granted. But can we stay connected
at the cottage?
Absolutely!
High speed internet service has recently become available
in areas throughout the Kawarthas which previously
had no service or only dial-up service.
Nexicom, the Millbrook-based communications company,
has been expanding its high-speed internet service to
underserviced areas over the past couple of years.
Wireless Project Manager Brad Edgar says although we
may not want to work on weekends at the cottage, having
high speed service can be liberating. It may make the difference,
say, in extending a weekend from Friday to
Monday because of the connection with the office and all
the services available there.
Also, a lot of people will move up to the cottage for the
entire summer. If they run their own business or are consultants
they can continue to operate a business from the
cottage with full high-speed internet service.
Although at the cottage we’d probably rather the children
were out in the canoe or exploring nature, they too
THE INTERNET
High Speed
Internet Available
At The Cottage
will be glad to be able to download music, continue gaming,
and connect with Facebook and You Tube, to say
nothing of email and texting.
"Our high-speed, wireless internet is also very competitively
priced and can fit comfortably into any budget,"
says Brooke Turney, Nexicom’s Marketing Coordinator.
"Recognizing the growing need to have high-speed within
the rural portions of the county, we wanted to price our
service in a manner that would be simple and affordable
for all."
The installation process is also very simple and noninvasive
to your home or cottage. The friendly Nexicom
technicians will visit your property and spend as much
time as is needed to obtain the strongest signal for you and
your family. The wireless panel is about the size of a telephone
book and is placed neatly on a high point of your
home or other structure you may have on your property.
The signal is strong, reliable and has speeds of up to 3
Mbps.
Nexicom will continue to work with The County of
Peterborough on the expansion of rural high speed internet
coverage over the next year.
So, there are definite advantages to cottage internet
service. The trick is in keeping enough control over it so
that the advantages can be appreciated while the benefits
of cottage life are not lost.
How to Take a
Water Sample for
Bacteriological
Testing
Follow these steps carefully so that
the water sample does not become
contaminated:
1. Obtain a sample bottle from any
office of the health unit or from
the Public Health Laboratory.
The bottle contains a preservative
added by the manufacturer;
do not rinse the bottle out. Keep
the bottle clean, dry and sealed
until ready to take the sample.
2. Remove the aerator or other
attachment from the tap, preferably
the kitchen tap. If necessary,
the mouth of a metal (not
plastic) tap can be disinfected
with a match or a lighter. Flame
the mouth of the tap for about as
long as it takes a match to burn
down. Do not wipe any soot off.
Run cold water for two to three
minutes. If the tap is made of
plastic and flaming is not possible,
then alcohol can be wiped
around the tap opening using a
clean tissue. Run cold water for
3 minutes before sampling.
3. Unscrew the cap from the bottle
without touching the neck of the
bottle or the inside of the cap.
Don't put the cap down. Hold it
facing down so airborne contaminants
can't settle in the cap.
4. Fill the bottle to the line and
replace the cap snugly. If not
refrigerated, the bottle must be
received by the lab within 6
hours. If refrigerated, it must be
received within 48 hours.
4th Line Theatre Presents Two
World Premiere Productions
This summer, there are plenty of new and exciting
things waiting for visitors to the Winslow Farm at 779
Zion Line (as you may have guessed, it used to be called
"4th Line."). The biggest news items are the plays themselves
– both are world premiere productions and are
set in locations ‘close to home.’
The Right Road to Pontypool (July 2 – August 1) is
written by Alex Poch-Goldin and directed by 4th Line
veteran, Kim Blackwell. A loving chronicle of one
man’s sun kissed dream for Toronto’s working class
Jews in the early 1900’s. With a way of life now van-
ished, Pontypool was a summer haven for thousands of
Eastern European Jewish immigrants in the heart of
Protestant southern Ontario. Set on the Barnyard stage,
the show runs from Tuesday through Saturday each week.
Welcome Death (August 12 – 29) is written, directed
by and stars Artistic Director Robert Winslow as
Coroner Robert Maxwell. "Whodunit" fans will love
this Victorian murder-mystery set right here in
Millbrook! The discovery of a young woman’s body in
a field outside of Welcome spurs investigations that
push past the constraints of science and
enter the realm of the spirit to find
unknowable answers. Inspired by an
actual coroner’s inquest, this play will
be performed on the intimate Meadow
Stage and runs Monday through
Saturday each week. Pre-show Artist
Talks are a new program offered before
the show on Fridays in August, hosted
by assistant director, Kim Blackwell.
Glorious Food! As always, 4th Line
Theatre is offering pre-ordered picnics
before the show with fun names like
"Farmer in the Deli", "Meadow
Munch" and "Roaming Buffalo." Also
provided by the folks at Baxter Creek
Golf Club this season, they are presenting
a new option in addition: for the
same price, patrons can choose to have
their picnic as a "Club Luncheon"
served to them by the gracious staff at
Baxter Creek’s full service Club
House. Millbrook & District Lion’s
Club will be making an appearance at
Winslow Farm this summer for a weekly
BBQ on Tuesdays in July and
Mondays in August. Both the Lion’s
and Baxter Creek’s menu can be
viewed at the theatre’s website:
BOATING & THE ENVIRONMENT
Boat Wake and Shoreline Health
The law in Ontario states that power-boaters must slow down to
10 kilometres an hour within 30 metres of a shoreline, and ignoring
this law can result in fines of up to $500.00.
Many people don't think that boat wake has a
harmful effect on shorelines. After all, haven't waves been
around since before people came to the area? Waves are a
part of nature and so shorelines should be adapted to them,
shouldn't they?
Yes, they should be, but when waves (and wake) are
coupled with extensively altered shorelines, degradation
results. And in many cases, wakes caused by boats are
much higher than waves naturally caused by wind.
The law in Ontario states that power-boaters must slow
down to 10 kilometres an hour within 30 metres of a
shoreline, and ignoring this law can result in fines of up to
$500.00. There is good reason for this law being in place.
Not only are large wakes harmful to the environment, but
to people and property as well.
Environmental Impacts
Large waves and wakes can impact upon the environment
in several ways. The most obvious result is erosion.
Sediment from riverbanks and shorelines are washed into
the water, along with trees and other plants whose roots
have lost their support.
Sediment washed into the water can cloud it, affecting
swimming, boating, and fishing, while trees that have fallen
into the water can be pushed up against docks or other
structures and damage them.
Creating wake in shallow areas causes water to drag
along the bottom and disturb plants, animals and eggs in
the area. Churned up mud can cause silting of fish spawning
habitat and will stick to fish, insect and frog eggs,
depleting them of oxygen and causing them to die. Large
wakes also affect the environment by swamping the nests
of loons and other waterfowl.
Personal Impacts
Wake can also have a negative impact on people. A large
wave can cause an undertow where the water is very shallow.
Young swimmers can be pulled under by the under-
tow, or be forced underwater by a large
wave crashing over them.
Wakes can rock, swamp or capsize
other boats. Passengers can be thrown
off balance or overboard when another
boat passes too fast and too close.
Wakes may also damage docked boats by
thrusting them against their moorings.
Young swimmers can
be pulled under by the
undertow, or be forced
underwater by a large
wave crashing over them.
Reducing Your Wake
The size of a boat's wake depends on
the hull size, boat speed, distance from
shore, and depth of water the boat is
operating in. Being aware of these factors
while boating is the first step in
reducing your wake. Other steps to
reduce your wake include:
• Always being aware of your wake,
especially when changing speeds or
boating in shallow waters.
• Slowing down enough to eliminate
your wake when required.
• Installing trim tabs to get up on a plane
quickly and keep your boat level.
• Boating in deeper waters and not getting
too close to other boats or the
shore.
• Positioning your passengers throughout
the boat, instead of just at the stern.
• Slowing down well before you come
across another boat or structure, as
your wake will move out at right
angles from your boat.
By being aware of the wake you create,
and minimizing it whenever possible,
you will be ensuring that the natural
environment you enjoy while out
boating is sustained for the years to
come.
Safe Boating Saves Lives
An enjoyable recreational boating experience depends on the ability of
owners and operators of pleasure craft to protect their passengers
and other boaters from risk and harm and to respect the environment.
This year there are new federal government regulations regarding
the dangers of carbon monoxide and the safe starting of engines.
Be knowledgeable about carbon monoxide and safe starting of engines.
Enclosed spaces containing fuel-burning engines or appliances should
be well ventilated to avoid carbon monoxide build-up. Fuel-burning
engines or appliances should also be certified or designed for marine use.
Use a carbon monoxide detector designed for a vessel and check the
detector’s batteries before every trip.
Engines left idling in poorly ventilated areas create dangerous concentrations
of CO: a tail wind can easily carry CO back on board.
Under new regulations, every pleasure craft must have ignition-protected
electrical devices. Ignition-protected components are designed
and constructed so they will not ignite a flammable hydrocarbon mixture
like gasoline or propane under normal operating conditions.
All operators of powered watercraft used for recreational purposes
within Canada will eventually require a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
Sometimes proof of competency is also referred to as a licence to
operate a vessel. The two are not the same. In most instances what
people actually want to know about is the requirement to carry proof
of competency, as required under the Competency of Operators of
Pleasure Craft Regulations.
Currently, proof of competency is required if you fall into one of two
categories:
1.You operate a pleasure craft fitted with a motor AND are born after
April 1, 1983; or,
2. You operate a pleasure craft, fitted with a motor, that is under 4m
(13 feet) in length (regardless of age).
If you were born before April 1, 1983 and operate a pleasure craft, fitted
with a motor, that is 4 m and over in length, you will require proof
of operator competency by September 15, 2009. There is no grandfather
clause or age exemption – this law applies to all boaters.
Powered watercraft includes watercraft fitted with any size motor –
even a trolling motor.
An operator’s card is good for life.
Optimized for Green Gain
Long before environmental issues were the forefront
in the media or in the minds of home builders, Royal
Homes, with their Royal-econstruction process,
incorporated building solutions that produced less
waste, conserved energy and took our environment
seriously.
Royal Homes is keenly aware of the growing
number of home owners who want to express their
commitment to the environment by building green.
They are an R2000, EnerGuide and Energy Star
qualified builder which means they adhere to a strict
series of technical requirements for efficiency that go
far beyond the required building codes.
Their construction process protects neighborhoods
and work sites from waste.
One of the most important features of theirfactory
technology is the ability to maximize material usage
and minimize waste. Each step of the construction
process is carefully monitored and the materials are used
wisely, making sure there is as little waste as possible.
Building indoors provides an environment for consistent
training and updating construction techniques
that take advantage of advanced learning.
Good design and engineering waste-generating
operations out of the manufacturing process from the
outset is critical. Pre-engineered design maximizes
standard width materials. Each cut makes best use of
the materials - significantly reducing waste.
THE ENVIRONMENT
Adhesives and fasteners, electrical outlets and
wiring are purchased bulk, reducing wasteful and
messy packaging. Because the home is delivered to
the site finished, there is little waste on the work site.
A factory has a better infrastructure than a construction
site. This reduces workplace injuries and
maintains a steady environment.
Conditions in their custom factory are constant -
materials are not exposed to the elements. This
increases their quality and significantly reduces damaged
and wasted materials. Overall quality of the
home’s finishes and structure is improved as our team
works in a controlled climate.
Choose from their royal-e options to maximize
the energy efficiency of your home.
Each Royal home is built with higher insulation
standards, performance windows, tighter air seal,
more efficient heating, hot water and air-conditioning
systems and air tight duct work for better air distribution.
Their homes are optimized for green gain. Talk to
Ways to Save Money and
the Environment on Your
Wood Heat at the Cottage
• Upgrade your old woodstove or
insert to a new high efficiency EPA
certified model
The new EPA certified stoves and inserts
are one third more efficient than older conventional
models. This means you burn up
to 30% less wood, saving you time and
money. EPA certified models also reduce
smoke emissions by 90% protecting air
quality.
• Change your traditional open fireplace
to a high efficiency EPA certified
insert
Traditional open fireplaces are considered a
heat loss, taking heated air right up the
chimney! By installing an EPA wood insert
into your existing fireplace you effectively
stop the heat loss and get more heat from
less wood, while creating less air pollution.
• Burn dry seasoned wood
Wood should be seasoned for six months to
a year generally, by stacking it in an open
area exposed to the sun and wind. Stack the
wood on rails to keep it off the ground and
cover just the top of the stack. Once it is seasoned,
usually October, then you can move
it to a sheltered area to protect it from the
snow and rain. Moisture content should be
between 18% - 25%
• Build small hot fires
Small hot fires are desirable in achieving
high efficiency, less air pollution and keeping
the chimney from plugging up with creosote.
To burn the smoke and gases coming
off the wood the firebox must reach approximately
1000 degrees F. These hot fires also
prevent the smoke from condensing in the
chimney creating highly flammable creosote
and choking your neighbours! Burn
seasoned firewood that is approximately 3"
– 6" in cross sectional dimension rather than
larger pieces which can smolder.
• Zone heating
Instead of turning on the heat for the entire
cottage, have a wood fire in the room where
the family gathers. This not only creates a
warm and welcoming atmosphere it saves
you money by putting the heat where you
need it, when you need it!
Rattan is a vine that grows mainly in
Southeast Asia. Rattan’s natural beauty
and strength have inspired craftspeople
for centuries to create intricately designed
furniture. Known for its incredible
strength, rattan is still used in the construction
of many suspension bridges
throughout the world. The fibres within
the rattan pole make it one the strongest
and lightest woods in the world.
Wicker means "to weave", or
"woven." The main wood used to
weave wicker comes from the centre of
the rattan pole, which is known as "rattan
core." There are other types of
material used in the wicker process,
however rattan core is the most common.
Pieces with an overall appearance
of woven rattan core are referred to as
wicker furniture.
With its style, strength and durability,
wicker and rattan furniture bring a
natural warmth that will enhance your
relaxing atmosphere, rattan furniture
offers years of comfort and durability.
Consider Your ‘Green’ Construction
Options in the Planning Stage
"Green" building practices in a new home, cottage
or renovation are easiest to implement when considered
at the planning stage. Several things can be
taken into account while the project is just beginning
on paper. Properly placed windows, distinctive shapes
in the building design, and creative roof lines can take
advantage of the sun as a heating source. Strategic
placement of a building on the land and consideration
for the existing landscape or waterfront can minimize
runoff and ensure that outflows off the building won’t
have a negative effect on the environment.
Selection of the materials and equipment used in
construction can make a home even greener:
• Foundation built from insulated systems like ICF’s
(insulated concrete forms) and the use of
polyurethane foam sealant ensure a building is airtight
and reduces heat loss.
• Walls can be better built to eliminate thermal bridging
of heat with less wood and more insulation.
• Windows should be Low E (low emittance) and
argon-filled for better insulation. A casement window
is more energy-efficient than a slider window as its
design promotes less air and water leakage.
THE ENVIRONMENT
Flooring made
from natural
products like
bamboo and
"oriented strand
boards" are
renewable and
reduce the
impact on the
environment.
• Heating from solar sources is becoming more common
and cost effective.
• Flooring made from natural products like bamboo
and "oriented strand boards" are renewable and
reduce the impact on the environment.
• Lighting that uses compact fluorescents helps reduce
energy consumption.
• Mechanical Systems are becoming more and more
efficient. ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor)
motors in furnace fan assemblies consume much less
energy and have reduced noise than traditional single
phase motors.
There are many strategies that can be incorporated for
greener home construction. The best way to implement
them is to spend extra time at the planning stage and to
be informed on all options that can be utilized to maximize
your investment and minimize your footprint on
the environment.
Do-It-Yourself!
DIRECTIONS
Conceptually, this project is like building a toy chest with corner guards that serve as
legs; the rear legs are taller to support the backrest.
1. Start by making the legs: Set the blade of the table saw at 45° and rip (cut lengthwise)
one board in half. From each half, use the circular saw to cut two 16-inch and
two 32-inch lengths.
2. Draw identical arcs at the base of each leg (we traced a 1-qt. paint can to make
ours), so each arc bottom ends at the miter joint; cut with saber saw.
3. On what will be the side pieces (or backrest) of each back leg, draw the
tapered front edge (see lower left drawing), making sure the left and right legs
mirror each other; cut with circular saw.
4. Assemble legs: Use clamps, wood glue, and countersunk trimhead screws (at about
5-in. intervals).
5. Cut from the remaining 1-by-6s:
• 4 at 44 inches (A boards)
• 4 at 163/4 inches (B boards; leftover 29-in. length will be cut into F boards)
• 6 at 46 inches (5 C boards, plus D and E boards)
6. Rip one 46-inch length into one 21/2-inch-wide piece (D board) and three 3/4-inchwide
lengths (E boards; one will be cut into two pieces for four total E boards). Also
rip the leftover B-board piece into two 21/2-inch-wide lengths and cut one into two
141/2-inch lengths (F boards).
7. Attach A boards, spaced 1/2 inch apart, to inside of front and back legs with deck
screws (two per end). Drill (or cut) a 11/2-inch-wide circle in lower rear A board.
8. Add B boards to join front and back assemblies; attach with deck screws. Along the
lower inside edges of A and B boards, use deck screws to attach E boards that
have been cut to fit; they'll support the wire-mesh bottom.
9. Cut D to fit between rear legs and rest on top of upper back A board; attach with
trimhead screws. Use hacksaw to cut continuous hinge to the same length.
10. Using the pencil and string, make curve for the top backrest board: Sketch an arc
with a 7-foot radius on a C board (the arc should start and end 21/2 in. above the
board's bottom corners), then cut with a saber saw.
11. Use trimhead screws to attach one regular C board and the curved C board to
make backrest.
12. Assemble bench seat from remaining three C boards and the F boards, attached
with deck screws. Center and attach hinge to the seat's inside back edge (a C
board), then attach the assembly to the front edge of D.
13. Cut wire mesh to fit. Attach it to top of E boards with trusshead screws.
14. Seal wood. Attach hook and eye (see photos).
Tips For
Unique Approaches
To Cottage
Decorating Style
Find out how fun the cottage decorating
style can be with this budget
minded guide to decorating any home
with cottage flair.
The cottage decorating style is one
that is warm and comfortable and has
great appeal to many.
When creating a comfy cottage
look, you want to give the illusion of
space and one way to do that is to get
rid of the clutter. Eliminate all that
stuff you don't need. If it can be recycled
as storage containers to store
stuff in, than that is great. You might
use old bread boxes, hat boxes and
other items as interesting storage.
Rather than tossing out your old
broken furniture, repair it. Using
older, time worn accessories and furniture
is part of cottage decorating.
Colors should be simple. Really the
most simple choice would be the simplest
color of them all; white. White
will help to create the appearance of
space and can be a relaxing atmosphere
for your personal touches.
Floral patterns, simple embroidery
and vibrant colors will likely be your
mainstay for pillows, throws and
quilts. This is where your unique personality
can add charm to the decor.
Plus you can save some money by
shopping at flea-markets for anything
from window drapes to towels. If you
need works of art, try getting art at
colleges and art festivals where you
can get it pretty darn cheap, and also
you may get the additional boost of
buying an artist who may become
famous later.
Old items look much better with
the cottage decor then newly bought
items from the store so feel free to
stock up at the yard sale or flea market.
Old architectural pieces, chairs
and lamps can all add to the shabby
chic allure. Renovated or handmade,
you can be positive that your accessories
will always be unique.

future needs – such as ramped walkways and accessibility
options, so that buyers don’t have to move as they get older.
Minchalet Homes is also building independence into their
units. Their custom barrier-free homes are being designed with
an elevator shaft, so that residents can install an elevator
should they develop mobility issues. Owner Frank
Boniakowski is offering buyers a range of adaptations to adapt
to future needs, such as wider doors to accommodate wheelchairs,
ramps into the home, and lower light switches and electrical
outlets on walls
Peterborough Manor and Jackson Creek Residence offer
accommodations for older residents. Peterborough Manor is
known as a very social place, where many of the staff have
been there for over twenty years, says Marketing Manager
Kathleen Gordon.
Overlooking the Otonabee River, Peterborough Manor has
two levels of care, independent and enriched. Their independent
option provides private studios and one bedroom units and is
targeted towards those who wish to be independent but with
the security of a full-time registered staff member. They enjoy
bathing, if required. All meals are served in the dining room with
four choices at each meal.
The enriched care program is a self-contained unit within the
residence, with a home-like atmosphere. There is a separate dining
At Jackson Creek Retirement Residence, located on Jackson
Creek in Peterborough, residents can enjoy the lifestyle that best
suits their needs, with a variety of options available, from private
to large one- and two-bedroom suites. An outdoor gazebo and
walking paths contribute to the serenity of the location.
Residents enjoy twenty-four hour call-bell monitoring, as well as
regular social, cultural and recreational activities
Canterbury Gardens has a three-story atrium as its showpiece.
Sunlight fills the space which is adorned with live trees, plants,
comfortable seating and a bistro café. Executive director Kerri
Davies likens the space to the heart of a village.
"The atrium is really the focal point of the residence," she
says. "It’s where residents and their friends and family gather,
and where a lot of our activities are held, such as fitness classes
and shuffleboard."
Canterbury Gardens is the Next Generation of Retirement
Living, according to Davies, offering a full range of retirement
options – from independent living to an enriched, assisted-living
program. There are 137 suites, with studio, one and two bedroom
options, complete with meals and
housekeeping. The residence will house
approximately 160 people.
Thirty "Garden Homes" have been
designed for more independent residents,
who can eat one meal daily in the dining
room, while cooking the other meals
themselves in their full kitchen. Washers
and dryers are available in these suites.
Twenty-eight suites on the third floor
offer enriched care for those who
require assistance with bathing, dressing
and medication administration, with
24-hour nursing care.
The grand first floor dining room
looks out onto a terraced garden where
residents benefit from a menu that is
tailored to their special requirements.
Canterbury Gardens promotes
healthy and active living for both the
body and mind.
Residents can swim or participate in
aqua-fit classes in the indoor therapeutic
salt water pool. Therapeutic
whirlpool baths are available in the spa
facility.
The on-site fitness centre boasts
exercise machines, weights, and regular
low-impact classes delivered by the
Gardens of Peterborough wellness
coordinator who is a kinesiologist.
AON, which owns Canterbury Gardens,
also operates Empress Gardens, Princess
Gardens, Royal Gardens, and a licensed
long-term care home in Millbrook.
In addition to the wide range of
accommodation available in the area,
many private companies and government
agencies provide services for
older residents in their homes, such as
cooking, cleaning and personal care
assistance. These are coordinated
through the Peterborough Community
Access Centre.
Peterborough and the Kawarthas is a
senior-friendly area, with all of the
appeal of a small town living, combined
with the cultural advantages of a larger
centre.

In a small bowl, blend the mayonnaise,
vinegar, sugar, celery seed, and salt and
pepper to taste, and mix well.
In a large bowl, combine the cabbage
and carrots. Pour the dressing over the
until serving time.
CHICKEN WINGS WITH 5 SPICE
RUB
2 lbs. chicken wings, divided into segments
and tips discarded (or cook
whole)
2 Tbsp. cinnamon
2 Tbsp. cloves
2 Tbsp. fennel seed
2 Tbsp. star anise
2 Tbsp. black pepper
1/2 red onion, chopped
1 cup white grapes, sliced in halves
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup mayonnaise (or less)
GRILLED CHOCOLATE BANANAS
Choose under-ripe bananas and milk
chocolate broken into small pieces.
There is no need to use precise measurements
as it's easy to adjust the
amount of bananas and milk chocolate
to match the number to be fed.
Take a sharp knife and slit the bananas,
leaving peelings intact, from end to end
so the flat part is on the bottom. Go
deep into the banana but do not cut the
bottom peeling. Force the slits wide and
stuff with the pieces of chocolate. The
amount you put into each banana is usually
determined by the amount of
chocolate or the number of people eating
the treats. Wrap the bananas in foil.
Place them on the grill with medium
heat for about 10 minutes or until the
chocolate is melted and the bananas are
partially cooked. Peel away the tin foil,
then the peeling, and scoop out with a
spoon. It doesn't hurt to add some vanilla
ice cream at this point to fully enjoy
the experience. These can be done in the
oven on medium heat - but frankly, they
are not quite as good. Pineapple slices
can be put on the grill at the same time
as the bananas and served along with
the bananas and chocolate. Now this is
a love potion - hot off the grill!
GRILLED CORN
4 ears sweet corn in their husks
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter, at room
temperature
2 tablespoons minced fresh flat-leaf
parsley
1 clove garlic, minced
Coarse salt and black pepper
Set up the grill for direct grilling and
preheat to high.
Strip back the husk, starting at the top
of the ear of corn; the motion
is rather like that of peeling a banana.
Leave husk attached to the steam end.
Remove corn silk and fold the husk
back over the stalk. Tie the husk with
string to form a handle.
Place the butter, parsley, and garlic in a
mixing bowl and whisk or beat
until smooth and creamy.
When ready to cook, lightly brush each
ear of corn with a little of the
garlic-parsley butter and arrange on the
hot grate, positioning the ears in such a
way that the husks are away from the
fire or slide a sheet of aluminum foil
under them. Grill the corn until the kernels
are handsomely browned all over,
8 to 12 minutes in all, turning as needed,
brushing with the remaining butter
and seasoning generously with salt and
pepper. Remove the corn from the grill
and serve at once.
GRILLED VIDALIA ONIONS
1 lg. Vidalia Onion for each person
1/2 teaspoon butter for each onion
Keep it simple by just washing the
onions, taking off excess skin, and cutting
a hole large enough to hold the 1/2
teaspoon of butter. Wrap the onions in
tin foil and cook along with the meat for
not more than two hours.
If you want a little more flavor, just
sprinkle a little of your "secret" rub
recipe in the middle with the butter.
GRILLED TERIYAKI TUNA
1 cup teriyaki sauce
3/4 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons minced garlic
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
4 (4 ounce) fillets yellowfin tuna
In a large resealable plastic bag, combine
the teriyaki sauce, oil, garlic, and
pepper. Place the tuna fillets in the bag.
Seal the bag with as little air in it as possible.
Give the mix a good shake, to
ensure the tuna fillets are well coated.
Marinate for 30 minutes in the refrigerator.
Meanwhile, preheat an outdoor grill for
high heat, and lightly oil grate.
Remove tuna from marinade, and place
on grill. For rare tuna, grill for 3 to 5
minutes on each side. For medium, grill
5 to 8 minutes per side. For well done,
grill for 8 to 10 minutes per side.
Cooking times will vary depending on
the thickness of the fillets and the heat
of the grill. Check the doneness of the
fish by making an incision with a knife
and checking the color in the middle.
GRILLED VEGETABLE PANINI
1 Sweet red pepper, split and seeded,
with each half cut into thirds
1 Green zucchini, cut into long slices
1 Japanese eggplant, cut into long strips
