Adventist Adventist World World Radio Radio - News News Release
Release
The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation has announced that they plan to close their historic shortwave station located
at Ekala, a dozen miles north of Colombo in Sri Lanka. In view of the close association of Adventist World Radio with
SLBC and their Ekala shortwave station over a long period of time beginning back in 1951, we are planning to honor
the occasion with a special edition of the AWR DX program Wavescan, under the title "Tribute to Ekala". We plan to
broadcast this special edition of Wavescan under the old title from around 40 years ago, "Radio Monitors International".
At this stage, the closure date for SLBC Ekala is not yet finally confirmed, though it is our intent to place this special
program on the air in the regular scheduling of Wavescan to co-incide with their last week on the air. SLBC plans to
transfer their shortwave planning to the ex-Deutsche Welle station located near Trincomalee on the east coast of the
island.
A special one time only QSL card will be prepared, based on the early QSL cards issued in Poona India for the
broadcasts from AWR-Asia and Radio Monitors International. All reception reports for this one particular edition of
Wavescan-Radio Monitors International will be verified with this special card, and the reception reports can be for any
of the broadcasts of this program over any station that carries the program. Postal mail reception reports are preferred,
with return postage, though in some cases email reports will be verified.
The only address for this special QSL card "Tribute to Ekala", is:-
Adventist World Radio, Box 29235, Indianapolis Indiana 46229, USA
The Radio Era on Shortwave & Mediumwave
This is now part 2 in our series of topics on the story of radio broadcasting in the coastal African country of
Sierra Leone and we cover the entire era of shortwave and mediumwave broadcasting which stretches from 1951 to
2002. We begin with the brief introduction of an experimental broadcast service on shortwave from their capital city,
Freetown.
It was in the earlier part of the year 1951 that this experimental radio broadcasting service was introduced, and
it was on the air from a 300 watt transmitter on the frequency 9630 kHz. It would be presumed that this was a utility
transmitter already in use for communication purposes. The address for postal communication was given as the Public
Relations office at 3B Trelawney Street in Freetown.
Due to a lack of adequate funding, this initial experimental radio broadcasting service was terminated in July, no
more than a few months after its original introduction. The 1952 edition of the World Radio Handbook lists this
shortwave station, though by this time this program service was already ended.
However three years later, a new endeavor began for the commencement of a radio broadcasting service in
Sierra Leone. The British government provided a grant to establish a radio broadcasting station and an engineer from
the BBC London was sent out to Freetown to work on this new facility.
This new radio broadcasting station was officially inaugurated in 1956, with a new set of studios at Pademba
Road New England, a new 5 kW shortwave transmitter on top of the hill at Hill Station, and the government
administration of the station at the Public Relations Office now located at 26A Westmoreland Street in Freetown. The
signal from the shortwave transmitter on the familiar channel 3316 kHz was fed into a single wire dipole antenna, and
the programming was mainly an off air relay on shortwave from the BBC in London.
The 1st known reception report for the broadcasts of the new Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service with the 5
kW transmitter on 3316 kHz at the hill top location was from Sweden and it was dated around September 1956.
However, even though QSL cards were printed subsequently, most reception reports were ignored due to limited
funding for the operation of the station.
Now, by the time the engineer from London finally took over as the Station Director in April 1958, he found the
station in complete disarray. The station was run down, the finances were an unorganized mess, the studio had no
sound proofing, the one microphone was suspended from the ceiling, the transmitter was running at low power, no
spare parts were available, and the hill top property was so small that there was insufficient space for an adequate
antenna system.
Consequently, ambitious plans were developed for nationwide radio coverage, with new studios & transmitters
in Freetown, regional studios at seven country locations, and three shortwave transmitters at 10 kW at Magburaka in
the center of the country. These tentative plans were subsequently modified with the suggestion of providing
nationwide radio coverage via a 100 kW shortwave transmitter on the edge of Freetown. However, almost none of
those projected plans were ever implemented.
What actually happened was that the original studios at Pemba Road were refurbished and enlarged, and a new
and more adequate transmitter station was built on a new site at Goderich, closer to the Atlantic Ocean. Two Marconi
transmitters at 10 kW each were installed; one for mediumwave coverage of the capital city area, and a shortwave
model BD268 for nationwide coverage. A multi-element antenna system was installed for national coverage on
shortwave.
Asociación Asociación Diexman Diexman Uruguay Uruguay ~ ~ 6 ~ ~ Boletin Boletin Nº Nº 79
79

The 5 kW shortwave transmitter was also removed from Hill Station and re-installed at the new Goderich facility.
The inauguration of this new mediumwave & shortwave station took place in 1961. The BBC engineer left Sierra Leone
in the same year 1961 and returned to London, and by this time most of the developmental work had been completed.
During the 1980s, the two Marconi transmitters, 10 kW each on mediumwave & shortwave, were replaced by
two new Continentals at the same power output; and then some 10 years later in 1995, these two Continentals were
refurbished.
During an attack by the Nigerian Air Force on October 16, 1997, it was stated that a large radio station was
destroyed in a bombing run. However, the station that was destroyed was an FM & TV station on top of Leicester Peak
in Freetown, and not the mediumwave & shortwave station at Goderich.
A 50 kW mediumwave station was on the air for a few years from a country location at Kenema; and the main
city service on mediumwave was provided with a 50 kW transmitter around the same time.
In 1966, it was stated, a ½ kW Rediphone shortwave transmitter was in use on the frequency 5980 kHz, and
according to the WRTVHB, this unit was on the air for a few years, into the earlier 1970s. It would be presumed that
this low powered transmitter was also located at the Goderich transmitter station.
The final listing for mediumwave coverage in Sierra Leone is shown in the WRTVHB for the year 2002, and the
final listing for shortwave is shown for the year 2005, though it was inactive at the time. The last known logging of the
10 kW shortwave unit on the familiar channel 3316 kHz is found in the British DX Club Bulletin in January 20012. All
radio broadcasting coverage anywhere in Sierra Leone these days is on the standard FM band 2.
The usual broadcast frequencies on mediumwave in Freetown were around the 1200 kHz range; at 1200, 1205
& 1206 kHz, with 10 kW initially and 50 kW during the subsequent era. On shortwave, the usual frequencies at Hill
Station & Goderich were 3316 kHz & 5980 kHz, initially with 5 kW and subsequently with 10 kW.
Anyone who holds a valid QSL letter, or the printed QSL card from the Sierra Leone Broadcasting station, does
indeed hold a historic treasure from the earlier days of radio broadcasting in this small West African country.
Next time here in Wavescan, the shortwave station in Sierra Leone meets its Waterloo.
* An Almost Forgotten Shortwave Station on an American Island in the Pacific - 00:48
An Almost Forgotten Shortwave Station on an American Island in the Pacific! Where is the island? And what
was the station? That’s our opening topic for today here in Wavescan.
Actually, the island is twenty two miles long and eight miles wide, and it is located on the edge of the Pacific
Ocean, just twenty miles off the coast of California. It is a tourist island and a vacation location for a million visitors
each year who come ashore from nearby Los Angeles. The island name is Catalina, or more completely, Santa
Catalina, and the tourist town on this island is known as Avalon.
It was in the year 1918, that the 37 year old son of multi-millionaire New Yorkers, Major Jordan Lawrence Mott,
came to live in Avalon on Catalina Island. During the Great War, he had served his country as an officer in the Army
Signal Corps.
Just two years later, Mott constructed his own radio station and was granted an amateur operator’s license with
the callsign 6BX. During the following year, he accepted an off-site appointment as the Assistant Editor for the new
radio magazine, Pacific Radio News. The March issue of this magazine gave two full stories with pictures about Mott’s
new amateur radio station 6BX. During the following year, the callsign for the Mott station was changed to 6ZW.
In the meantime, Mott was also granted an experimental callsign, 6XAD, and this was issued around mid-year
1920. This experimental license granted Mott the privilege of making test transmissions with music & speech, on what
was described as variable wavelengths.
Another article about the Mott radio station 6XAD-6ZW with pictures was published in QST magazine for August
1922. Around this era, Mott was on the air usually in Morse Code and for example, he was one of the few who
maintained continuing radio contact with the MacMillan expedition up towards the North Pole in 1922 & 1923. This
expedition was carried in the newly launched ship “Bowdoin” and its wireless equipment was on the air under the
callsign WNP, signifying Wireless North Pole.
During the year 1924, Mott began work on the installation of upgraded new equipment for station 6XAD-6ZW
which was installed in his home in Clarissa Street (Avenue), in Avalon. This equipment enabled the broadcast of
speech & music, and he made a series of initial test broadcasts during the afternoons in the winter of 1924.
One of these test broadcasts featured a local choir and it was radiated on what was called at the time, a “shorter
wavelength”. The allocated channels in use around this time were 196 m (1530 kHz) & 172 m (1745 kHz). In January
1925, it was announced that station 6XAD-6ZW was about to begin a series of transcontinental test transmissions with
the navy radio station NKF, located at Anacostia in suburban Washington DC.
Just before Easter 1925, Mott made a series of test broadcasts on shortwave over 6XAD-6ZW beginning at
11:00 pm, and the channel on this occasion was 150 metres, 2,000 kHz. On Easter weekend, April 11 & 12, special
broadcasts from the Easter events on Catalina were relayed to mediumwave station KHJ in Los Angeles on the
mainland for a wider coverage area.
Other special programs that were relayed by 6XAD to the mainland on frequencies just above the mediumwave
band were a four hour musical drama “The Sandman & Queen Titania”, a concert on the Wurlitzer organ, and a
program of band music from an open air concert in Avalon.
The reconstruction of his radio station was completed a few weeks later and this included new studio equipment
in his home, as well as a grand piano and a new callsign. Initially, it was stated, the callsign for the mediumwave
facility would be KFLM, though when the station was officially inaugurated in mid August 1925, the call was actually
KFWO. Mott used the call letters KFWO to stand for Katalina for Wonderful Outings.
The technical equipment at the new KFWO, all of which was located in his Clarissa Avenue home, included a
250 watt transmitter on 211.1 metres (1420 kHz), and a flat top wire antenna. The shortwave equipment under the
callsign 6XAD was still in use for the purpose of relaying the mediumwave programming of KFWO to distant
mediumwave stations in the continental United States.
The new mediumwave station, even though on the air at only 250 watts, was often heard far afield, and
reception reports came in from listeners in many of the American states, including from the staff at the high powered
WLW in Cincinnati Ohio, and from New York City, and from various areas of Canada. Another correct reception report
was received from a listener living in London, England.
In the early winter of 1927, the owner of Catalina Island, William Wrigley of chewing gum fame, organized a long
distance swim from Catalina Island to the California mainland, a distance of twenty two miles. The Wrigley Ocean
Marathon, covering a distance one mile greater than the swim across the English Channel, attracted 102 participants.
It began at midday on Saturday January 15, and ended at 3:00 am next morning, with only one successful contender, a
17 year old Canadian by the name of George Young.
In order to provide radio coverage of the entire 15¾ hour event, mediumwave station KNX in Hollywood placed
its low power remote shortwave transmitter 6XA aboard the SS “Avalon”. The continuous live coverage from shortwave
6XA was received off air on Catalina and rebroadcast by mediumwave KFWO in Avalon. In turn, many mediumwave
79

stations throughout the continental United States relayed this programming, including for example, KNX in Hollywood
California, KGO in Spokane Washington, KOA in Denver Colorado and KMOX in St Louis Missouri.
In mid 1927, the licensing authorities required KFWO in Avalon to change channel from 1420 kHz to 1370 kHz,
and during the following year to 1000 kHz. In a second change for the year 1928, KFWO was required to change
again, this time to 1500 kHz, with a power drop to 100 watts and shared time with KWTC in nearby Santa Ana,
California.
Around this time, Major Lawrence Mott attempted unsuccessfully to turn his home based radio station into a
commercial operation. Instead, he surrendered the license to the Federal Radio Commission, gave the equipment to
station KWTC at Santa Ana, left the island for ever, and went to live in Hollywood. That was the end of the Mott radio
stations in Avalon on Catalina Island: amateur 6BX & 6ZW, mediumwave KFLM & KFWO, and shortwave W6XAD.
During his 10 years of radio activity on the island, Mott was given very wide coverage of his radio events by the
local newspaper, the Catalina Islander, and he issued many QSL cards. At least three QSL cards are known: a blank
card printed with the callsign 6XAD, another similar card printed with two callsigns 6XAD & 6ZW, and a third card a
colored tourist card printed on the text side with the complete details of station KFWO. Also offered was a QSL stamp,
printed specifically for station KFWO, showing a swimmer diving into the ocean.
The American island in the Pacific was Catalina, and the almost forgotten shortwave station was the
experimental station W6XAD which made numerous program broadcasts during its ten year lifetime in the 1920s.

Desea
http://www.ewtn.com/spanish/Especiales_de_Television.asp.
Devociones http://www.ewtn.com/spanish/prayers/devociones.asp
Morera: http://www.ewtn.com/spanish/preguntas/index.htm.
cualquier otra pregunta relacionada a EWTN.
EWTN, 5817 Old Leeds Road, Irondale - AL 35210, EE.UU.
ATTN: EWTN Espanol
sea imposible contestar personalmente.
I spent two weeks last November on Sumatra and western Malaysia, DX-ing every day on my portable Sangean 909.
Hola,
Ingresa a http://www.ConversationsClub.com y comienza a prácticar tu inglés!
Te esperamos en nuestra comunidad y quedo atento a tus dudas, consultas o sugerencias.
Saludos, Marcelo Puentes por ConversationsClub.com
Reporte Policial.
desilusão acontece, a avaria continua.
testamos o radio e desilusão, a avaria continua.

discriminador estava ok.
COMMENTS ABOUT DX-NIGHTS BOC-28 :
Reception on SW & MW respect BOC-27, has been a bit more good, the reason is related to the missing of storms in
the area of the listening.
But on the other hand both Solar Flux & flares in the Sun has been quite poor, respect the BOC-27 days. Most good
results on MW from USA/Canada at 0400-0500 hours and to Spain/Iberia at 0650-0700 hours.
NATURALLY WE WILL BE PLEASED TO RECEIVE YOUR COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS, CORRECTIONS. PLEASE
SEND ALL THEM TO : info@playdx.com
TILL NEXT BOC-29 ! . 73's Dario & Giampiero.
