Grammar inference [Hon], also known as automata induction, grammar induction and auto-<br />

matic language acquisition, is a field of research with the purpose of learning grammars and<br />

languages from data. It can be applied on the fields of syntatic pattern recognition, adaptative<br />

intelligent agents, diagnosis, computational biology, syst<strong>em</strong>s mo<strong>de</strong>lling, prediction, natural<br />

language acquisition, data mining and knowledge discovery. According to [PH01], it is possi-<br />

ble to learn grammars from simple examples, like sparse configuration files.<br />

There is active work on this subject, namely the GenParse project, which is a collaboration<br />

among the University of Alabama-Birmingham, U.S.A. and the University of Maribor, Slove-<br />

nia. It aims at easing the <strong>de</strong>velopment of Domain-Specific Languages and also at <strong>de</strong>veloping<br />

renovation tools for legacy syst<strong>em</strong>s. It makes use of the Genetic Programming paradigm to<br />

infer Context-Free Grammars.<br />
