Due to their exceptional<br />
support for the University of<br />
<strong>Oxford</strong>, MICA ERTEGUN<br />
(through Americans for<br />
<strong>Oxford</strong>, Inc.) and DICKSON<br />
POON, CBE, were recognised<br />
as new Fellows of the Court.<br />
Membership of the<br />
Chancellor’s Court of<br />
Benefactors stands at more<br />
than 190 and the impact of<br />
the Court’s generosity is felt<br />
both in <strong>Oxford</strong> and around<br />
the world.<br />
The Sheldon Medal<br />
As part of the annual<br />
meeting of the Chancellor’s<br />
Court of Benefactors,<br />
<strong>Oxford</strong>’s highest honour<br />
for philanthropy, the Sheldon<br />
Medal, was presented to<br />
MR LEONARD BLAVATNIK<br />
in honour and recognition<br />
of his transformative<br />
benefaction of £75 million<br />
to create the Blavatnik School<br />
of Government. Michaelmas<br />
term saw the first cohort of<br />
Blavatnik Scholars begin<br />
their studies and many of<br />
them were able to attend the<br />
special ceremony to see Mr<br />
Blavatnik receive the medal.<br />
As Chairman of Access<br />
Industries, which he founded<br />
in 1986, Mr Blavatnik is a<br />
leading global industrialist,<br />
with interests in natural<br />
resources and chemicals,<br />
real estate, and media and<br />
telecommunications. This is<br />
only the sixth time that the<br />
Medal has been presented<br />
to an outstanding <strong>Oxford</strong><br />
benefactor since its inception<br />
in 2002. Previous recipients<br />
are the late Lord Wolfson,<br />
FBA, Chairman of the<br />
Wolfson Foundation; Mr<br />
Wafic Rida Saïd; Dr James<br />
Martin; Mr Michael Moritz<br />
and Ms Harriet Heyman; and<br />
Lord and Lady Sainsbury of<br />
Preston Candover.
