TAILORED INSTALLATION
Because we do our own design and production work, our
cable winches have no restrictions. We can provide you
with the right winch for each job and for each vehicle.
The options for installing our winches in your vehicle are
almost unlimited since our winch designs have all been
made for as compact a space as possible. This means
that we can install your winch as required either at the
front, the side or the back of your vehicle. We can also install
the winch in a retracted position in the middle of the
chassis. Here we carefully account for the deformation
properties of the chassis and the supporting and tensile
forces and their effects on the frame of your vehicle.
2
As a single source supplier we can also provide you
with a combination of different superstructures for one
vehicle. All our winches are designed using our longstanding
expertise and skills, integrated with each other and
highly effi cient in their use. We also focus on achieving
the lowest possible superstructure weight and complying
with all valid standards.
With all these strengths we are truly second to none.
MEETING CHALLENGES
We also design optimal customised solutions when
dealing with the narrow confi nes of the chassis of a
Unimog.
The photograph shows the complex job of combining a
winch with the frame area tog ether with a rear power
take-off shaft. Since the conditions of the structural space
following the introduction of the EURO 4 do not permit a
side installation anymore, the winch had to be integrated
with the frame.
Such a superstructure cannot be integrated into a standard
platform. This is why Werner made a winch with an
exact fi t and implemented a solution which allowed for
an installation to the frame according to the customer’s
requirements.
The Unimog U 500 in the photograph has been designed
by Werner for a special use in the energy sector.
The customer wished to combine a hydraulic cable winch
with numerous other pieces of equipment on a vehicle
possessing a short wheel base. Along with a front compressor
and a work basket on the platform, this U 500 also
features a crane superstructure and a slope support.
Despite the crane frame recesses the cable course leads
from the winch installed at the side of the vehicle and
through the frame to the back. Combined with the crane
frame this conversion was a special engineering and
design feat by Werner not the least because of the short
chassis.
CABLE WINCHES MADE BY WERNER
We make our cable winches completely by ourselves –
from the planning and design stage through to the
production of the smallest gearwheel. We are the only
company that has this manufacturing depth which is why
our cable winches are so exceptionally good.
Already at the design stage of our cable winches we can
take your special needs into account. Whether we are
dealing with a combination together with other equipment,
different drive concepts, winch positions or cable
courses – our engineers will fi nd just the right solution.
CABLE WINCHES
Werner cable winches are made to precisely fi t the
requirements for which they have been built. Whether
in forestry, the water industry or for any other purpose
anywhere in the world – you can rely on cable winches
from Werner.
This is how things have always been and this is also how
things will always be.
TECHNCIAL SPECIFICATIONS
Cable wind up: Werner cable winches are equipped with
a cable guide housing and a spooler over a cross-wind
threaded spindle. This allows a minimum wear of the
cable and an optimal use of the cable drum volume. A
direct angular traction force can be used with an installation
at the back or the front of the vehicle.
Releasable with a load: Forestry cable winches made by
Werner can be released with a load. To avoid damage
to the equipment during its use with downward loads,
the brakes can be opened by pressure and the loads
released. The cable drum can also be completely separated
from the gear unit by using the drum neutral position –
this makes the cable pull out considerably easier.
Hydraulic cable supply: Especially with winches which
have been installed at the front or back of a vehicle, the
hydraulic supply device used to pull out the cable functions
with a minimum of force. The hydraulic cable supply
compensates the friction drag of the defl ection pulleys
and the cable bedding. A fi rmer adjustment of the sliding
brake prevents a trailing of the cable on the drum. The
cable wind up under initial stress prevents loose cable
from gathering on the drum.
Position-dependent control: The use of Werner cable
winches with a position-dependent control allows the
respective cable position to be exactly established while
in operation. The electro-hydraulic or elec tronic control
assures a consistent lifting power over the whole length
of the cable.
11
LIFTING
The precise operation of a cable winch is especially important for lifting work. This includes the various demands
placed on the equipment during pole positioning work in the power- industry as well as during its use for demanding
rescue operations.
This is why we have solved the problem of an optimal interplay of clutch and brake with our lifting cable winches.
This enables heavy weights to be precisely lifted and lowered as well as the sensitive and exact handling of winches
making precision work with Werner cable winches child’s play.
In addition, the balanced interplay of the lifting and lowering functions provides more safety for people and equipment.
The use of our space-saving winches in confi ned areas also opens up a wide range of installation opportunities.
To allow you to make full use of the potential of your cable winch, we will install it in exactly that position of your
vehicle which is the most suitable for your work.
Werner is constantly thinking one step ahead. That is why our lifting cable winches with their many well-designed
functions and features can make your work so much easier.
The traction force display shows you the current traction
force values.
For many of the uses of your winch you must know how
much cable you still have available on the drum. The
remaining cable display shows you the exact amount of
cable remaining on the drum. It also provides you with
an acoustic alarm.
The dead man’s operation prevents any accidental operation
of the cable winch.
LIFTING CABLE WINCHES
The cable slack disconnection controls the initial stress
of the cable and prevents loose cable from winding up
on the drum which could damage the cable.
Each centimetre counts during critical rescue operations
and sensitive installation work. The proportional control
unit of our cable winches enables cable speeds which
are close to zero.
PRECISION: The proportional control and perfect balance between the clutch and the brake of our lifting cable winches
allows for highly precise and centimetre-exact operations within precisely prescribed areas – even with heavy loads.

PULLING
Traction cable winches are real work animals. They must therefore be robust and effi cient. During a self-rescue
operation on diffi cult grounds, the salvaging of fl oatsam in the water industry, or during logging operations in
the forest you have to be able to rely on your winches.
This is why Werner has been manufacturing well-designed and robust winches for many years now. The robust technology
of the gear units and winches assure a safe and effi cient use for years on end. The equipment is also easy to
maintain and repair. This makes the cable winches made by Werner such a reliable tool which will not let you down.
This is our promise to you!
Traction cable winches have unlimited applications. Werner will make you the right winch for your specifi c use.
For a use in forests your winch must move heavy loads
over great distances. For this purpose, our winches
have an ergonomic ratio between cable diameter and
traction force.
Especially with great cable lengths we especially focus
on the cable spooling of our traction cable winches. To
allow an active winding of the cable we have already
invented the cross thread spindle many years ago. This
assures a tidy drum which goes easy on the cable.
3
4
The neutral gear position of the drum, for example,
makes it easier to pull out cable in diffi cult grounds in
forest opera tions. To avoid dangers from sloping
loads, the cable drum of these winches can still be
disengaged with a load.
Maintenance work in the water industry can be carried
out quickly and safely with slope supports.
TIDY: Great lengths of cable are especially important in the water industry. Our winches with their cross thread
spindles actively wind up the cable onto the drum thus keeping it tidy and reducing the wear of the cable.
RESCUE OPERATIONS
When they are being used by the fi re-brigade, the German technical services THW or for disaster control purposes,
our cable winches help to save lives. To meet all the demanding requirements of these uses, our cable winches have
been optimally designed to meet the special challenges posed by rescue operations.
Especially with regard to the costly superstructures used by fi re-brigade and other special vehicles, Werner integrates
the cable winches perfectly with the frame of the vehicle. Here we of course look for a perfect fi t of the installation with
the other equipment of the vehicle and their functions.
The simple and effi cient operation of Werner cable winches not only makes the work easier but also safer. In addition,
you can use our cable winches to display and monitor all safety-relevant functions and data from one central position.
This is especially important during fi re-fi ghting operations, and it helps to make your work safer.
High-quality cable winches cannot be replaced by anything else during rescue operations. Here you can always rely on
winches made by Werner.
16
A traction force display informs you of the current traction
force values.
A clearly visible display in the operating fi eld of the
cable winches allows you to continuously monitor the
remaining cable length on the drum.
A dead-man operation prevents operations from being
carried out accidentally.
During critical rescue operations – especially those involving
the fi re-brigade – a highly precise control of loads is
often critical. The proportional control unit of our cable
winches allows you to use cable speeds close to zero and
to perform work in the centimetre range.
During self-rescue operations you have to be able to
reply on your cable winches. That is why cable winches
from Werner feature a simple and robust design and are
a completely reliable tool for everyday use.
SAFE: For use in fi ghting fi res or controlling disasters: Werner cable winches can be optimally
integrated into the total concept of a vehicle while meeting the high safety requirements of
rescue services.

WE ARE REAL ALLROUNDERS
We don’t know of any place where cable winches are
used for which we would be unable to fi nd a solution.
Whether on a ski-jump or at a container terminal. Our
winches are able to meet any challenge and they are
It doesn’t always have to be a Unimog. Werner has perfected
the customised installation of cable winches –
regardless of where this happens to be.
For example at the Mühlenkopf world cup ski-jump in
Willingen. This is where Werner adapted a hydraulic
lifting winch and installed it into the shaft of the ski-jump
tower. The cable leads to the ski-jump table over defl ection
pulleys and lifts or lowers an inspection basket used
to maintain the ski-jump. This is just one of the challenges
which we have successfully met in recent times.
designed to meet your specifi c requirements. We only
need to know what your winch is meant to do and we
will design one for you accordingly.
This FESTMA extension was designed and built by
Werner according to the special requirements of the
Bremerhaven container terminal.
The vehicle possesses a front lifting device, a 4-tonne
front winch and a 1.5-tonne gypsy winch behind the
driver’s cab. This set up allows the transport and erection
of a gangway. The gypsy winch is used to moor the
container ships in the harbour. With one vehicle two operations
can thus be carried out effi ciently.
