According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, most of the deforestation across the tropics was due to the direct conversion of forest into permanent agricultural land or pastures, and to a lesser degree to the gradual intensification of shifting agriculture. Assuming that the average MTH pulpwood volume in degraded tropical forest is 50-80 m3 /ha, the area needed annually to satisfy the annual MTH pulpwood requirement is some 160,000-260,000 ha.
